Playland is the home to one awesome wooden coaster and a lot of flat rides that give you the feel of being at a fair. Many of the flat rides are thrilling, and they run them for long cycles.
The park does look a little rundown, and there is definitely a set of rides for younger kids and a set of intense rides for older kids/adults, but not much for the whole family to do together. The food options were also pretty basic, and shade is at a premium as the surface is pure asphalt.
As a caveat, if you attend during the PNE (Canada's Largest Fair) in late August-early September plan for more time at the park. Crowds will be heavier, prices will be higher, but additional flat rides are brought in. Many of these rides are extreme, but they also bring in some family-friendly rides. Also, there will be traditional fair entertainment and a midway full of intoxicating food vendors.
This park is definitely an older park. It still has the "state fair" type of feel to it. You should go during the Pacific National Exhibition though, as there is a lot of (freakin' amazing) food there. The coaster there is what makes this park worthy to be visited, as the airtime on that monster is crazy! All in all, this park is alright, but could do with some more theming.
Pretty decent park with the last of the Carl Phare designed wood coaster. New for 2011 is a 218 foot 70 km/h Star Flyer swing ride. A great old school park-101 years in one incarnation or another.
