Six Flags Darien Lake (SFDL) Discussion Thread

pft, F1? Dragster produces higher wind shears than that, LOL.

Thats cool. Considering winds were only 72-112, I woulda been tempted to drive through it or something.

Reminds me of a bit from a comedian I watched talking about a guy that tied himself to a palm tree to show that he was in good enough shape to handle the winds from a hurricane.

Went something like "It's not THAT the wind is blowing. It's WHAT the wind is blowing. It doesn't matter how many sit ups you did that morning if you get hit by a Volvo"

An F1 might not be powerful enough to wipe out an entire town, but going towards it wouldn't be all that bright. A few fence posts in 100mph winds are still going to be able to do quite a bit of damage.

^That'd be Ron "Tater Salad" White.

Here in Southwestern Ontario, it's a real crapshoot for weather. I live in the southernmost part of Canada, and storms have a habit of dying as soon as they hit the Detroit River; conversely, you can always count on some fierce storms in the London/Waterloo area an hour or two north of here.

Darien Lake Theme Park has proposed adding a new $7 million water attraction, Genesee County Planning Director Jim Duval said.

The County Planning Board, at its Feb. 11 meeting, recommended approval of a site plan for Pirates Cove Water Park at Darien Lake.

Cassandra Okon, public relations supervisor for the theme park, said no decision has been made on whether to build Pirates Cove. “Right now it’s still in the works,” she said. Okon said the theme park may add the new water attraction “because this is what our guests have been asking for.”

Pirates Cove includes a Lazy River Attraction, a FlowRider surfboard ride and a 50-foot-high Mach 6 water slide.

Paul Ruben, North American editor of the trade publication Park World, said the FlowRider, a surfboard or boogie board ride, should be a huge draw. “That’s certainly a first for our area, frosting on the cake,” he said. FlowRiders have been popular wherever they’ve been installed. The Lazy River, a tube float trip, is a hit with families, Ruben said.

Lazy River can also handle a lot of people simultaneously, so waiting time in line is usually short, the editor said. “Lazy River will be a high-capacity attraction for visitors of all ages,” Ruben said. He said Darien Lake needs to balance its attractions between the ride park and the water park. “And they are doing that,” he said.

Aquatic Development Group of Cohoes, N.Y. is the firm that would build Pirates Cove at the theme park.

The site plan calls for construction of the new feature in a section of parking lot on the south side of the park, between the rides area and Sumner Road. Some parking spots will be lost if Pirates Cove is built, Duval said. “They feel they have more than enough parking,” Duval said.

County planners recommended approval of the ride because “it will be in harmony with the orderly development” of the theme park, according to the board’s recommendation. The site plan application goes next to the Darien Town Planning Board.

The theme park had proposed an expansion of its water attractions in 1999. Darien Lake at the time was owned by Premier Parks, which was later purchase by Six Flags.

That "Mach 6" waterslide that is proposed could be a multislide tower from Proslide. They call "Mach 7" the slide complex they built for Colombus Zoo waterpark and it includes there 2 Cannonbowls (bowl slides with double tubes), 1 vertical drop slide, 2 enclosed body slides and 2 tube slides. Would be an amazing move on the part of Darien Lake if they built something like that.

^They have a really good Intamin Hyper, but if you've been on the other Supermen Intamin Hypers I wouldn't go out of my way. It's a mirror image of the one at SFA.

Elissa, thanks for the reply..Haven't been on any of the other Superman Intamin Hypers, so might be worth a trip just to credit whore a few coasters.

^If you haven't been on any of the Supermen Hypers then ABSOLUTELY go to the park!

Just don't ride Predator or you'll have a spine injury!

When I went to Darien Lake last summer, Predator wasn't as bad as I was expecting. It was running slightly better than it had previously. Mind you, that's an upgrade from "OMG worst coaster ever!" to "OMG bottom 10 coaster ever!".

That said, Ride of Steel alone makes the visit worthwhile. Well, that and Fascination.

This would be great addition for the park! When we went in 2008, the lines for the waterslides were almost unbearable - and this was on an overcast day in the 60's with spitting rain showers. But wait, that's a typical summer day in Western New York, what am I thinking???

And the one at Darien is a LOT better than that crap at SF America! And it's true, trackwork on Predator has given it a somewhat enjoyable front seat ride!

Regarding this slide stuff, a flow rider sounds cool. I usually skip the water stuff, but this and another slide complex might make it all worthwhile.

LOL!! I totally agree with you! Also Viper is a really good one too if your looking for some good inversions.

Overall I think it's worth it. It really is a nice park and they even have a newer coaster which is always nice. As for the expansion, I hope it connects with a part that already has water attractions because all the water rides are kind of spread out all over the place right now

If you need a good laugh check our godarienlake.com. I love how on some of the pages the have the outline of The incredible hulk coaster on the top(like the homepage) also how long do you think the name OCC moto coaster will last befor it become generic motor cycle coaster. The shows done so does the name really help the ride too much anymore? Well besides the nice bike they built for the park imao there would be no reason to re-new or extend any current contracts.

The board of the Genesee County Economic Development Center approved two incentive packages Thursday that will benefit Darien Lake Theme Park. The GCEDC granted $380,000 in tax exemptions for a proposed $7 million expansion of Darien Lake's water park. The abatements include $332,000 in sales taxes on construction materials and $48,000 in property taxes over a period of 10 years.

The upgrade at Darien Lake will create the equivalent of 19 full-time jobs. The second resolution the EDC board approved Thursday was $479,400 in mortgage tax exemptions for the theme park's corporate owners, CNL Lifestyles Properties of Florida.

CNL Lifestyles and its operations entity, Parc Management, is in the process of refinancing $100 million in debt. Obtaining new mortgages at more favorable interest rates is part of the project. About $38 million of CNL debt is from Darien Lake.

The GCEDC conducted a special meeting to act on the two Darien Lake matters. The proposed expansion may include Pirates Cove Water Park. Pirates Cove consists of a Lazy River Attraction, a FlowRider surfboard ride and a 50-foot-high Mach 6 water slide. Darien Lake's proposed site plan states that construction of the new feature on the south side of the theme park, between the rides area and Sumner Road.

Here it is: Darien Lake is undergoing MAJOR expansion! New Water Park, New Cabins, New Fort-themed suites to open in 2010! Expansion includes creation of world-class water park, SplashTown at Darien Lake! Photos uploading now!

The new website for SplashTown is now online with plenty to see!

http://www.splashdarienlake.com/

Darien Lake has also put out two new press releases about the launch of this new water park.

Western New York’s largest family-friendly destination, Darien Lake Resort, today announced plans for a multi-million dollar expansion, the largest in over a decade. The resort’s latest investment continues a history of improvements including the construction of Lodge on the Lake Hotel, addition of world-class roller coasters including Ride of Steel and MotoCoaster, and now the creation of a world-class water park – SplashTown at Darien Lake.

For the 2010 season, Darien Lake Resort will grow into two parks: Darien Lake Theme Park and SplashTown at Darien Lake. The 2010 season begins on May 8th with the opening of Darien Lake Theme Park. SplashTown at Darien Lake is scheduled to open Memorial Day weekend barring weather delays. In addition, Darien Lake’s Lodge on the Lake Hotel will get 10 new Forts-O-Fun kid-themed rooms decked out with forts where little travelers can sleep and play. Darien Lake’s camping facilities will also be expanded with new Brown Bear Cabins offering a rustic getaway with all the comforts of home.

Specific additions to the new, bigger and better SplashTown at Darien Lake include a brand new quad-slide complex, new lazy river, new wave pool, an additional 5 acres of completely new park space, a new bathhouse, new food and beverage options, new landscaping, more deck and lounging space, and new cabanas.

Towering above SplashTown will be Swirl City, a mammoth, new quad-slide complex featuring four completely different, exhilarating water slide experiences. Almost like a complete water park in and of itself, the huge new complex delivers fast-paced swirling, whirling, sliding, and spinning through open and enclosed sections of track – including some translucent sections giving an exciting view to both riders and spectators! The four slides are to be called: Mister Twister, Cannon Ball Run and Turbo Twins, which features two dueling slides.

The new Flotation Station lazy river will offer a relaxing float down the 16-foot wide river while guests enjoy serene landscapes, water features, and soaking up the sun. Guests may float on single or double passenger inflated tubes. Perfect for all ages, Flotation Station is a 1,000-foot long tropical oasis.

Located at the entrance to Flotation Station, the new Lazy Days Lagoon will conjure up images of a lazy day at the beach. The 44,500 gallon wave pool features surf-friendly waves that gently roll to shore. The new, wide “beachfront” deck space includes plenty of space for families to sun and play at the water’s edge.

“The extensive additions underway at Darien Lake Resort will create a true vacation destination for travelers from all over the country including our guests living nearby in upstate New York, southern Ontario, and northern Pennsylvania,” said Resort General Manager, Christopher Thorpe. “By transforming Darien Lake into two major parks, our guests will have a world-class theme park and world-class water park to enjoy during their stay at Darien Lake Resort.”

In addition to the expansive water park additions, Darien Lake Resort will be adding 10 Forts-O-Fun backwoods themed rooms inside the Lodge on the Lake Hotel. Log cabin- look bunkers will provide children with some independence and their own space to sleep and play, all within earshot of the grown-ups. Forts-O-Fun guest rooms include separate bunk-beds, play space, a television, and Playstation 3 video games.

Darien Lake Resort’s camping area is also growing with more than two-dozen, all-new, family-friendly Brown Bear Cabins. The custom-designed cabins look rustic on the outside, but the inside is complete with all the comforts of home including a fireplace, loft, bedroom, fully-equipped kitchen, eating area, wireless internet, and cable television. Each cabin will also have a front porch and outdoor fire-pit to experience all the traditional fun of camping with the amenities of a first-class hotel.

“Our Lodge on the Lake and campground properties have been a huge hit with resort guests from throughout the region,” said Thorpe. “The new Forts-O-Fun make a stay at the Lodge even more exciting for families and the Brown Bear Cabins open up options for larger families that want to make a trip to Darien Lake their special family vacation.”

Darien Lake Theme Park opens for the 2010 season on May 8. SplashTown at Darien Lake is scheduled to open Memorial Day weekend barring any weather delays. Season Passes for both the Darien Lake Theme Park and the new SplashTown Water Park are available online at GoDarienLake.com or by calling 585-599-4641.

are they keeping the old slide complex? also I think this may mean they will never put up the stand-up. if it were going to happen, woulda happened

Yes they are keeping the Cuda Falls complex.

From the Splashtown website, "The bigger, better, wetter SplashTown Water Park at Darien Lake features three all-new attractions, an additional 7,000 square feet of completely new park space, a new bathhouse, new food and beverage options, new landscaping, more deck and lounging space, new cabanas and a complete makeover of the popular Cuda Falls water slide complex"
