Photo TR: Diamondback and Pilgrim's Plunge

Recommended Posts

My main coaster goal this year was to return back to Ohio and go ride Diamondback. I was simply impressed on how it looked so I made a special trip up there this past weekend to go check it out with some friends. This past weekend also was Holiday's World's opening weekend so we visited that park as well to go check out the new Pilgrim's Plunge ride. Feel free to add comments

First up Kings Island.

So, how was your ride Chuck?

DSC07146.JPG.8f674035129c8455e37b1d09a6f88f18.JPG

This is what it looks like from a distance.

DSC07155.JPG.6a87f59815ef431baf3553df436be73b.JPG

It just hides the train.

DSC07154.JPG.c306c775036e854088bb93476de8edaf.JPG

The splash is really huge.

DSC07153.JPG.92784507af30b9665918af90b177176d.JPG

It is certainly a top tier B&M Hyper. I still give a slight edge to Behemoth.

DSC07160.JPG.1720cd5c107d3e1fe649c38e049fac79.JPG

This part, in particular, is really awesome.

DSC07159.JPG.63ad5b7333bf0e9bed035852ab1e0ce6.JPG

It does have a lot of that floaty B&M airtime. Especially in the back.

DSC07145.JPG.f33905394629de213d493d4d6a7b9205.JPG

It is true. The lift hill does move really fast. Almost like a cable lift.

A Group of riders heading out of the station, they look happy.

Chuck had been to the park once before, but that was during Winterfest sometime in the 80's.

Hmm...seems the energy/happyness fades between ride one and ride two! Haha, naww..I like Invertigo...aside from a bit of head banging, it's a forcefull ride.

Glad to hear you liked Drop Tower that much! Before Diamondback....that's all I had for airtime!

Can't wait to see how HW went.

Lets head on over to Holiday World. We had an awesome visit to the park. The coasters were really running great. Raven was running just as good as always. Voyage really surprised me on this visit. I rode it back in 2007 and I honestly thought that the coaster was way over-hyped after riding it a few times. It just was too intense with all the jackhammering that occurred that year. I understand that it is now running very close on how it did during its opening year. Plus the mid brake run was turned off as well. Other than one pot-hole moment heading up on the third hill, I found the ride to be very re-rideable. Which was something I could not say two years ago. Legend was running good as well. It too seemed to be running much better this year.

Crowds were very light this day due to the news channels reporting that there was an above 70% chance of rain/thunderstorms for the day. Well, that was pretty much proven wrong. It rained lightly for about 10 minutes.

We had a really nice conversation with Pat Koch for about 10 minutes while were we eating lunch. She came over and said hello and asked us how our day was going. How many other parks can you say that the owner/director of the park comes over and greets guests in this manner?

As for Pilgrim's Plunge, I enjoyed quite a bit. I think it is a solid ride for families. I will go into more detail with this in my photos.

Oh let us head on over to Pilgrim's Plunge, shall we?

As for the ride itself, we thought it was fun. It is a solid ride for the family. The ride just opened a couple of days ago and it is quite amazing how fast that they were able to get it built. They did have it open for opening day, which was promised. This area was originally a basic field, so that is why there isn't any trees or foliage in the area yet. I think they will add some landscaping around the first section of the ride when the time comes. I think its better not to have a tunnel in the first section because everyone will be wanting to watch the lift. The drop is not too intense because its not as steep as some other water rides. The splash may not be huge when compared to other splashdown rides, but I think its is larger than a standard long flume. Well, it is certainly bigger when compared to Splash Mountain at the Magic Kingdom. If I was to build a tunnel for the ride, I would do it around the final bend back into the station because that section does move at a very slow speed. Maybe have some Pilgrims in the tunnel welcome you back from your journey.

I am going to do one final update later, but feel free to add comments now.

Back into the station they go.

You guys have fun?

DSC07385.JPG.cd4832273b15737e141d00313fc2476e.JPG

I think I counted 5 boats on the ride.

DSC07384.JPG.ef2be08191fd919b26ee8f27ef9b15af.JPG

The slow return sail back to the station begins here.

DSC07383.JPG.89923169b8b7e793a8c3bacd4149ca8d.JPG

With a full boat of people, everyone gets quite wet.

DSC07382.JPG.414201518b23e09936eb27544ace81d2.JPG

They are off!

DSC07381.JPG.0029965d728872b46e6d4cd8a585c264.JPG

They are now getting ready for the plunge.

DSC07380.JPG.366ae040089cf49e4eb920a2c3bc2223.JPG

They are now passing by the other lift.

DSC07379.JPG.bf04fe0247fa9f7dc069b8145fc8aefa.JPG

The lift is really cool.

DSC07378.JPG.1266b0554b21381588683bc8b4ace80e.JPG

The boat is now locking in the elevator.

DSC07375.JPG.cf839ee1aaac4b1ac1e5ba65958bf59e.JPG

I think its better not to have a tunnel here so you can see the tower. I am sure they will add some plants at a later date. The boats move quite fast in this area.

DSC07373.JPG.4e4fa713aed6d5f67c909a38d6ffd558.JPG

Off they go!

DSC07371.JPG.9a1eb61b925f117645eeb093afdaba19.JPG

The boats continue to move while you board.

DSC07370.JPG.59d196d80468675bab6b8875da152f14.JPG

Looks like a full boat of riders.

DSC07374.JPG.bc36bba025806f9b89c707ea66f83c5d.JPG

Here is a closer look.

DSC07359.JPG.ffd34d90e8c543712140e622d59e7699.JPG

See how big it is?

DSC07358.JPG.a5e99a98944d1e56fe5358d457351db2.JPG

We were all very impressed with the size of this fan.

DSC07357.JPG.fdb312d64b3f69433522c95ae1f3fe4f.JPG

I am sure this will be full of park guests in the months to come.

How many rides are you able to ride barefoot?

Let us check out the queue building.

They also get to use this tunnel while walking over to the ride.

This is the walkway over to the waterpark. Which is seperated from the rest of the area.

You can enter the ride from either Splashin' Safari or Holiday World.

DSC07353.JPG.2efe0692a571772af83247cd66b288f2.JPG

Just a few days before our visit this was not finished yet. It is looking good so far.

DSC07302.JPG.72403ae6b3db316aba22b2d811594f86.JPG

The splash is actually bigger than you think, especially since these are smaller boats.

DSC07299.JPG.1dce55972dda2ffe93d748e1e923c66c.JPG

While it is tall, the actual drop is not too intense, which is perfect for a family ride.

DSC07297.JPG.f376e6d79deaae6ff20d623594bc9948.JPG

They really built this area up really quickly.

DSC07295.JPG.83e00f1b5829fb4fc97580de3aefbf40.JPG

We are walking over to the new area.

Pilgrim's Plunge, the new ride at Holiday World just opened up.

Without a poncho, you can get really wet on the ride.

Nice meeting you this weekend, Jiggety Johnson! Had a blast. I'm really glad Diamondback opened back up Saturday night. Weird how it was closed the time that I wasn't there.... (looks around nervously). Anyway, glad to hear PP is a fun ride. I know lots of people on here have been dissing it, but they haven't even been on it... Great photos as always. Feel free to hit me up anytime you come back to the midwest!

^The lift is probably the most intimidating part of the ride. You really feel exposed. IMHO I loved Pilgrunge. It is a super fun water ride. They desprately need play and spray water cannons, which I'm told they are adding this week. Woo Hoo! If'n ya ain't wet yet! Ya will be!

Excellent TR Erik! I had an awesome time with you guys over the weekend. I'm so glad I could make it. Tell tha tall kid I said Hi!

Great pictures. It's interesting that it appears that they really rushed to get Pilgrim's Plunge open on time. I'm curious to see what the area is going to look like after they've had time to put in some landscaping and such. Overall though it looks like a decent water ride. It clearly doesn't look anywhere near soaking as say Perilous Plunge, but it still looks like you get decently wet.

Glad to see Guy's sexiness is back. Great report as always Erik. Your pictures are always awesome and you really bring out the atmosphere in the parks. I'm glad you had an experience on Voyage like its opening year. That truly was when the ride was the best.

It does look like they threw everything else out the window to get the ride open on time. That's pretty much what they did for the opening of Thanksgiving and The Voyage, too. And I would expect nothing less from Holiday World. They said it would be open, and it is.

Having said that, I may wait to see what else they do to improve the area before I make a special trip.

Anyway, thanks for the TR!

^^There were groundsworkers there all day working on stuff. I imagine the whole area will look very different in only a matter of weeks.

^Not at all Jow. As empty as the park was, it was mostly kids that were pulling their parents begrudgingly onto the ride. I think the angle of descent really helps make this a much more family friendly ride. All I can say is that I enjoyed it, and my kids are salivating over the chance to go on it in as soon as possible.

I could be wrong, but wasn't the original date for completion supposed to be in June?

Holiday World is pretty good about things being ready on opening day, so I doubt that. I do know that a June date is being tossed around for the holliwatch program which still isn't even anywhere on the grounds in public view.
