getting locked in the park is absolutely awesome.

what a great story you'll be telling for years and years to come

I don't know if I would call it awesome, but it will make a good story to tell. Even if it's just as the joke in a stand-up routine.

If being locked in meant I didn't have to attend the family reunion the next day, I think I'd have snuggled up in the Cowardly Lion's cave and enjoyed the night.

It was a wedding with an open bar. #drinkupmeheartiesyoho

These reports are awesome! Nice pics as well. I didn’t even know Fun Spot Orlando existed until this excellent day, but I definitely want to go there now.

And being locked in that park sounds creepy. But what a great story to tell too. Who knew you’d find that kiddie park in the middle of South Dakota.

Oh man, that's crazy! Glad that you ended up seeing the positive in it all. That said, if I ever manage to get Rikki locked inside a random kiddie park in search of some kiddie credit, I'm pretty sure divorce papers wouldn't be much further behind.

The Fun Spots are awesome and I wish more people knew about them/went to them. But with Disney/Universal/SeaWorld/Busch Gardens, why would they even know about it/care? They should because they're awesome, that's why.

As for Oz, yes it was creepy. Those statues I posted, there were dozens more that I didn't get pictures of. Death by Weeping Angel that looks like Cinderella. #dontblink.

It would be worse if you didn't even get the credit like me.

Wow! That's quite a story. This isn't the same Oz park that was abandoned for a while, was it? Either way, it is a pretty creepy park to get trapped in. Glad you got out but boy, that would have been a story if you all were stuck inside overnight!

The one that was abandoned is somewhere in the Carolinas and is open for a couple weeks out of the year for special events. It's a destination on my bucket list.

Journey 8: Valleyfair AKA Ride Operator Year 4 of 4

So 2018 was my fourth and last year of being a ride op at Valleyfair. Since I've posted reports of my previous years at the park, I won't bother you too much with a lot of talking here. So I'll just let my favorite photos from this year do the talking.

Rides operated this year:

Delirious

Steel Venom

Scrambler

Flying Eagles

Tilter

North Star

Antique Autos

Carousel

The Wave

Journey 9: A Week in Branson AKA Silver Dollar City and More.

I'm going to get this out of the way now: I love Branson. Silver Dollar City is a big part of it. Another part is just how beautiful the area can be. But to see that beauty, one must first get to the southern edge of Missouri from Minneapolis.

20190525_055327.thumb.jpg.2397654e8ecb3143ebc74ed0db98832f.jpg

So begins the game of Tetris that is loading the car.

I work the evening/night shift. We wanted to leave home at 6am. Can you see the problem here? So my plan was to sleep until Kansas City.

I barely slept on the ride down.

20190525_131507.thumb.jpg.701ff755914cb85744da58b98ce75768.jpg

Not this time, Worlds of Fun.

We get to Branson about 8 pm. By the time I finally crawl into bed, I've been awake for about 36 hours straight. Ugh.

This is the part where you'd expect me to head straight into Silver Dollar City, right? Nope. I'm going make you read the other boring stuff first. But chronologically, yes, I did go to Silver Dollar City the next morning.

Other than lounge around our lodgings on Table Rock Lake and Silver Dollar City, my family also went to one of the multitude of shows that Branson had to offer. The chosen show was Samson at Sight and Sound. A place that turns Bible stories into musicals. Not my choice, I would have gone to the Dolly Parton show, whatever it's called now.

Going in, I was hoping it would be more along the lines of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Joseph or Jesus Christ Superstar. Nope.

The Theatre has some amazing production value--particularly in the costume and set design. The acting in the show was good enough, with the guy playing the show's main antagonist feeling like a cross between Charlie Day and Christopher Fitzgerald (who originated Boq in Wicked), but not great. No music really stood out. And the entire production kept beating a dead horse when it came to its Biblical message. Not the best metaphor when your show uses live animals.

However, if you can stomach it, the theatre does offer backstage tours that show off how great their production design is. And the tours are led by members of the cast.

Welcome to Silver Dollar City.

I spent 2 days at Silver Dollar City during the week: alone on Sunday and then again on Thursday with dad. Day 1 was after the ride down after spending 36 straight hours awake.

I hadn't eaten anything in nearly 24 hours outside of a couple chocolate bars. So my first stop should have been the Cinnamon bread. But since I'm an absolute idiot, my first stop was Time Traveler.

I absolutely loved the ride. It was just so much fun. My first ride, by luck, I was placed in the back car as a single rider. That drop out of the station is awesome. The ride was disorienting in the best way. I think the biggest problem with the ride was the pause at the launch. Do I think it needed to be there? No, but I'm not everyone with a weak stomach. Do I think some shed-type thing could be there? Yes, but it's not needed. The ride is awesome without it.

20190526_131819.thumb.jpg.2ede613ec22c4e1aa67781ffedab8e28.jpg

Seems Like I want to go to the third floor.

20190526_132250.thumb.jpg.6d54e0c0bcf1bc1ef279d92185789a0e.jpg

I'm early.

20190526_132502.thumb.jpg.74a88cb71be551ce8ffdd5aa39bd08b8.jpg

But I'm also late.

20190526_132955.thumb.jpg.b08cb0a9801eefe1fc80ddcf4fea5a74.jpg

I was expecting a Blue Box.

20190526_133703.thumb.jpg.bab54cca9f6724beccacd738b0d60dbd.jpg

Not for those with tell-tale hearts. Captain Hook would also have a heart attack.

After a couple wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey rides, you'd think now I'd finally get something to eat. Probably cinnamon bread? Still no food for me as I jumped in line to see the Saloon Show. Another funny show filled with bad jokes and pretty girls.

20190526_151243.thumb.jpg.035cf9e7c3e1785a11c5b259ba4a685c.jpg

Couldn't snare a pic with the show's drummer. I know it's a cymbal blocking her face, that was the only drum pun I could think of.

And the host of the show. (from day 2)

Several rides, a show, and over a day after I'd last had a meal, you'd think it would finally be time I found some food.

Wildfire said "not yet."

20190526_153334.thumb.jpg.ddfc4eea125dc075f1831823252055f2.jpg

After Wildfire, I finally picked up some food. My appetite sated, it was time. Time for what you ask?

Time to take my horse to the Outlaw Run.

20190526_160837.thumb.jpg.62810927897222b7a6a32862e3ef496e.jpg

Riiiiide til I can't no more.

I loved Outlaw Run back when I visited back in 2014. It was slightly rougher than I remembered it, but it's still a very smooth wooden coaster and an awesome one to boot. RMC is amazing.

20190526_161956.thumb.jpg.ccdf4c296827919ab3ab5f16350d9c93.jpg

I did some wandering around the park, took the train to get some shots of Outlaw Run. Didn't get much.

20190526_190401.thumb.jpg.1d45c7149feaa55fab094a94a3c20e9c.jpg

I quickly popped into Fireman's Landing for the S&S tower (which I previously rode when it was at Celebration City). It was one of the S&S towers to add seat belts. And that slowed operations to a crawl. And the ride had no airtime and a cycle shorter than Kevin Hart.

Finally, I made my way to the front of the park for the cave tour. I stopped to get some Cinnamon Bread, but they were temporarily sold out, but I could wait a couple minutes for it to come out of the oven. In hindsight, I should have waited. I missed the cutoff for the cave tour and waited for the following one--enough time to eat a loaf. And by the time I got out of the cave, the shop had closed.

Now I won't bother sharing too many cave pictures as my phone has terrible low-light capability.

20190531_103328.thumb.jpg.1ed353fc2cdea40c360a156f7674f4ee.jpg

After I got out of the cave tour, the sun had descended. A perfectly dark time in the park. And almost no one left inside. I had 30 minutes of night rides available to me. There was only one option: Outlaw Run. I got another 4 or 5 rides at night at various points in the train before getting on the last dispatch of the night on Wildfire.

As previously said, Dad came with me on the second day. Which involved me dragging him around the park as much as he could handle. The constant breaks he had to take gave me some opportunities for more photography this day. So instead of a play by play I don't fully remember, I'll just leave you with some pictures and some occasional commentary on what he thought of the park.

Dad wasn't a fan of Time Traveler.

Today only, my butt! Or since time is relative, everyday can be today!

I finally picked up a couple loaves of Cinnamon Bread on the way out of the park. Mother was initially upset we brought it back to the lodge because we "didn't need it," but she couldn't help but wanting more.

Goodbye Silver Dollar City. Until next time.

And of course, I had to get a Time Traveler hat. Already have an Outlaw Run and Wildfire hat from previous trip.

Great report! You must have been exhausted visiting Silver Dollar City with that little sleep, but I'm sure the awesomeness of that park woke you right up.

Silver Dollar City is one of those parks where one could spend a full week at and feel like you didn't spend enough time there. It's Branson in general. I'd love to live there if I didn't hate driving in those hills.

lots of great pics, like Michael noted, I dunno if I'd be able to fully enjoy myself if i were that exhausted.

but I sure as hell would give it a try

Thank you for the compliments. And no one need worry about my sleep--I got a full 8 hours before going to Silver Dollar City.

Truth. Heck, I've been going to SDC for thirty years and I don't feel like I've spent enough time there. I do feel like I've spent enough time in Branson traffic, though.

I enjoyed your photos of the backstage stuff at Sight and Sound. Never actually seen a show there...because...well, it's definitely Branson.

Cave tour...check.

Cinnamon bread...check.

Silver Dollar City complete.

Yeah, the backstage tour is the only thing I could recommend of the theatre. The productions themselves are more focused on style than substance. And by substance, I mean being able to tell a compelling story without being overly preachy. But yes, Branson.

Cave tour...check.

Cinnamon bread...check.

Silver Dollar City complete.

Silver Dollar City NOT complete:

-Not enough cinnamon bread

-Wanted to take the cave tour again with dad on day 2, but his back couldn't take it

-Skipped log flume *prepares to run from an angry coasterbill*

-Went the week before the pirate show started--really wanted to see that

Journey 10: Mall of America AKA The OG Nickelodeon Universe (Ft. Sealife)

For all my love of what we Minnesotans call the "Mega-Mall," I've never actually posted a trip report on TPR from it though. Weird. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Since I'm in a quarantine zone; (Curse you, COVID!) thought I'd take the time to do so now.

So the week I went for this report was a really weird week for me. I was planning on visiting on Friday. I ended up going Thursday to take my mind off of things considering Wednesday was the funeral for my Grandfather.

Also, for as many times as I've visitied the mall, I'd never done Sealife. Lucky for me, there was a combo deal for Sealife with Nick U. Sweet.

It's a Piranha! They live in the Amazon.

Is this Kevin Kiermaier?

Whoa man, look at the colors on that Jellyfish, yo!

Overall, I'm glad I visited at least once. It had some neat exhibits and I like looking at sharks. I could do without hearing some kid (or their parent) singing baby shark every 5 seconds though. It's never something I'd do without some combo ticket.

But now it was time to go into the park itself. So I did the first ride I saw: the Shredder Chance Frisbee.

20190801_143541.thumb.jpg.36b61514d0703b3ca3955b92a0c01ce3.jpg

Whee!

The queue was right next to the lift for the Fairly Odd Parents Gerstlauer spinner. I love how rides are stacked on top of rides in this park. Not Grona Lund level, but surprising for the USA.

Twisty!

I'm a huge fan of the Avatar animated series (Shut up, M. Night fans) and I hoped that the series would get a better ride than an Intamin Half Pipe. It's a fun enough ride, but I wish it was something else.

And the NJ one has lap bars only? Unfair.

For whatever reason, the park did not retheme the Sally Ghost Blasters to Danny Phantom (The Danny Phantom ride was the defunct Chance Falling Star where Shredder is now). Not everything works as well as it used to. It had a decently well-themed queue when it originally opened.

When there's something strange, but it's copyright. Who ya gonna call?

Thanks to the park's "Hold my beer" attitude when it comes to placing rides on top of rides, there's a ropes course on top of Ghost Blasters and the queue for it is next to the lift for the Spongebob Eurofighter.

Look at all that natural light! It can be blinding when going up the lift.

It's gotten a little rough over the years.

Helix of Doom!

Even when I "double-fisted" the guns (operator's words, not mine), I can't seem to get a good score.

I came, I saw, I kicked its ass!

In line for the Zierer coaster monorail, one can get some good shots of Spongebob's

LOOP-DE-LOOP!

The Ripsaw Orange Streak only has one train. Can make for long-ish waits, but with a station built on top of the bumper cars, it provides a great platform for pictures.

Monorail through the trees.

But the obvious star attraction at the mall is...

The Backside of Water!!!!

Which is located in the queue for the second-best attraction: Paul Bunyan's Log Chute. Unfortunately it was having a number of technical difficulties on the day which resulted in the queue being cleared out a couple times. But I still love how absolutely campy it is. I'm glad the park keeps it up. And I especially love that the park dresses up the main Paul Bunyan animatronic during holiday seasons.

Seen from Log Chute queue.

Apparently the mall was having some sort of butterfly-themed art display when I went.

Oh sh!t, it's Mothra!

The Mall allows for many vantage points for photography.

Plunging to Rock Bottom!

LOOP-DE-LOOP!

I love the mall and the park. I try to go at least once a year (but not always for the park). There are times I like to go to the mall and just walk around. Might do a little shopping. But I will always make a point to ride the Log Chute. It must be protected at all costs!

Every time I see this thread it gets that song stuck in my head. I'm going to start a new world-travel trip report thread called "It's a Small World After all" to counteract it.

Anyway, great report. That place is incredible.

Great report!

Out of curiosity how big is the SeaLife? I thought the exhibits at the one at the West Edmonton Mall were good, but it was tiny.

As for Ghost Blasters, I agree this ride should have been themed to Danny Phantom. Where did the themed queue used to be for this ride?

MoA is great. We've been twice, the first time being before the Nick Universe re-theme. That log flume is legit.

I grew up with it as Camp Snoopy. It's amazing how many people I know still call it Camp Snoopy. And also LOG CHUTE!!!

Imagine how I feel about the title. I'm half dreading my (potential) trip to WDW this year and meeting Elsa...

At least I titled this report before the Frozen II song was released.

And BTW: how incredible would you think the mall was if it didn't have the Log Chute and the Margaritaville?

In terms of square feet, the aquarium is nearly double the size of Nickelodeon Universe. With 1.2 million gallons of water. I don't go to aquariums that often so I don't know how to compare them unless I can google the sizes.

As for the Ghost Blasters queue, most of the themeing and much of the queue itself was removed to make room for Spongebob. The addition of Spongebob also meant the removal of a 4-D motion theater.

And from far left field....

You know, you should totally sue Disney, for "Song Title Infringement"...or something to that affect.

"Into the unknooooooown...." ~ Elsa, Frozen 2.

p.s. That husband-wife team of The Lopez's you should be really going after.

Elsa, looking for good lawyers.

For some reason, I think that Disney and the Lopez's have better lawyers than I do.

I enjoy this park. I just wish we had more time at it. We crammed this park, the mall and valleyfair all into one day

Yeah, Valleyfair can be done in a half day, but amusement park-seeking tourists need at least a full day at the mall. Hell, I've been going to the mall all my life and recently, a single day hasn't felt enough to me.
