Robb & Elissa Go To Japan & Don't Ride Any Roller Coasters!

Recommended Posts

I took 2,700 photos on day one!!!

Obviously I cannot post 2,700 photos in one trip report (Well, I can, and then even Adam Roth would be all "Damn! That's a LOT of photos!!!" and then you know I would have accomplished something!)

This was my favorite part of the report. Hi Adam! How are those trash can photos doing!?!?

I came back from our last Asia trip with 17,000 photos... So at least 35% of those were trash can photos!

Every-time I see Tower of Terror queue-time pictures makes me remember that one time out of all my trips they had the single-rider line for it open and I basically ended up going around in it for about 2 hours and getting 10 rides in a row because I wasn't sure if I'd ever get a chance like that again.

I'll be making my first DisneySea visit in early November. I knew Journey would be closed when I booked the trip, but even then, with these photos and your other TRs I'm still looking forward to TDS the most of all the Japanese parks.

Loving this report and it's getting me really excited for the trip! Robb are there any new Duffy & ShellieMay & friends characters that you're looking to add to your collection on your next visit? Or is there a Halloween style/alt of a character you're looking forward to the most?

They didn't do any classic Halloween costumes this year, but they have some AMAZING "fall" costumes that I am going to pick up not long after we land in Tokyo! Basically, the plane will land, and as soon as I can, I'm heading to Tokyo DisneySEA and then right to the Duffy store to pick up the new costumes! Gotta have her ready for her Tokyo Disney Halloween Season premiere!

Also, Duffy is currently in the Lost River Delta area wearing a sombrero, so there is that!

Google'd. Yeah the little red riding hood outfit for ShellieMay is adorable. The Sweet Dreams line that comes out October 8th looks really cute, too!

Always tired.

^No. There's actually no pass that's good at ALL the parks. Tokyo Disney tickets are 'cheap' enough (especially compared to here in the US) that it wasn't even cheaper to buy a pass for this year with our visits in March and October. Trust me, we did the math! For example, the after 6pm ticket is $40. The annual pass is $900 (and has blackout dates). That's a LOT of visits to make your money back.

is your annual pass good at Disney parks all over the world? Or do you just do evening tickets each night if you're in a place with a DisneyPark and want to pop in?

Tokyo Disney does an "after 6pm" pass on the weeknights or "After 3pm" pass on the weekends. So outside of the "official days" when we have a 4-day ticket, I'll just go and buy the after Xpm tickets to spend a few hours. It's usually about $40 - $45 for the after 6pm pass, and the park is usually open until 10pm.

That being said, I do treat my bonus nighttime visits much like I do my Annual Pass visits at Walt Disney World. I normally go in just to "walk around" and take photos, see the shows and *maybe* ride something. For example at Disneyland, I'll most certainly watch Dream Lights every night I'm there, walk around a bit, and then a few minutes before park closing get in line for Pooh (which is never more than about 25 minutes at that time.)

At DisneySEA I'll just spend that time walking around taking photos, and usually taking a ride on Aquatopia & Sindbad... maybe the Indy single rider line as well.

I will probably watch Fantasmic! at least once or twice this trip because it's ending, but honestly, I usually don't watch it because I've seen it many times before, and it takes time away from just exploring the park.

But that is my usual typical night at these parks, and is exactly why we ended up staying a week in Japan without riding any roller coaster! The lines for Space Mountain & Thunder Mountain were just too long for attractions we basically have the same versions of here in the US.

I have uploaded a higher quality video of the 35 Happiest Celebration Street Projection Show. This show seriously was FANTASTIC! And they ran different projections in World Bazaar throughout the night. In this video there are three different shows:

1. "Celebration Street" (Brand New Day)

2. "Goodnight"

3. Classic fairytales.

I also included a slightly longer version of Brand New Day at the end because the show and the song is awesome!

Wow. More Wow. Just wonderful, all of it! The tech to show all of this just gets better and better when Disney does it. And I always love when they go into that deep blue on the buildings and all around. And everybody grabbing the mylar tinsel and confetti, LOL! Cheap souvenirs I approve of!

Thanks for getting all of this to show us, Robb!

I am as green with envy as Gelatoni -- for all things Japanese! But perhaps what cracks me up most is its stuffed animal culture!

So here is a REAL serious question:  when choosing your ShellieMays and Duffys et al, do you first examine the expressions on their little faces? How their little mouths turn up?  Droll? Or innocent? Or perhaps all-knowing?  I'd probably be in the shop for ages lining them up for comparisons.

Then again, I AM ALSO partial to Elissa's 'slightly depressed-looking' Shrimp!  That bland little mouth is so dang RIGHT for those certain mornings!  So perfect to wake up to!

Thanks guys for all these awesome photos!  They are truly MUCH APPRECIATED!

Great question! Yes, people take their time examining the stuffed animals to find the 'perfect' one.

And also yes, my shrimp is the best!

I think Gelatoni will be my pick. I hope you like Tower of Terror, Gelatoni.

Let me know when Duffy adds an adorable shrimp tail that is depressed and likes to stay in the corner to his list of friends. Then I will happily carry one around the park.

No wonder Sumikko Shrimp looks depressed.  Duffy & gang get all these cute costumes, and, now, a new Sweet Dreams line, while that cool-looking Shrimp has little to look forward to beyond Nori, sushi rice, wasabi, and a dab of Kikkoman...in a corner of course....

Ok, so where did we leave off from the last update?

001.thumb.JPG.7f8e64d357270b16602740ebe196baf7.JPG

Ahh, yes. ShellieMay and I were hanging out at Tokyo DisneySEA...

002.thumb.JPG.5a7524ada163a26a99e126d5cce7a20c.JPG

We took many rides on Journey to the Center of the Earth...

003.thumb.JPG.4f978144a08ac7a182b1b30117a34a6d.JPG

and now it's time to head to someplace a little bit different... The Arabian Coast!

004.thumb.JPG.940476398b3aa81083bfbf157c793711.JPG

Quite possibly my all-time favorite Disney dark ride is Sindbad's Storybook Voyage. I'm going to post a video of it below, but I have to be honest, it's just one of those rides that doesn't seem as "special" watching on video, but it is just amazing when you are there!

005.thumb.JPG.c6c27c2ca462ec4b849bebf99b797db7.JPG

Around the corner we find... *gasp* ... A ROLLER COASTER!!!! But this is a report without riding roller coasters, so we will just LOOK at it but not ride it.

006.thumb.JPG.4be10205e182f7233459e6403214a26b.JPG

LOOK! SEE!!!! Pretty? Yes?

007.thumb.JPG.a328938c626ce9a6e29e619fcae5f622.JPG

Honestly Raging Spirits is one of those coasters that *LOOKS* amazing... but rides just "okay." It's not rough or anything, it just is sort of "there."

008.thumb.JPG.2f8a2966495626ed905fa3118e32d692.JPG

But people are having fun on it and that's all that matters, right?

009.thumb.JPG.9c4e5b4c0d2b18773130527e616f56b3.JPG

Oh yeah, it does one of 'dem loop-de-loopy things.

010.thumb.jpg.bbce04033f1e0384566a2ac67db781c2.jpg

Hello Tokyo Disney popcorn! How I love you so sooooo much!

011.thumb.jpg.158276d74938addbf5b9fc9823d7c2a5.jpg

Can I just point out for a second that not only is a full bottle of Coke at Tokyo Disney only about ....

012.thumb.jpg.55db115a26a7786522ac0dc2ff3b4583.jpg

...but every bottle you get is wiped off and served to you nice and clean. I mean, why would you want a wet bottle, dripping with ice and whatever else the bottle was in when it is handed to you, right? (US parks... take notes here!)

013.thumb.jpg.9b00a38249c78aea55fe95991462c16a.jpg

These Donald feet and Mickey hands headbands were new and all the rage during our visit. They finally did make it out to the US a few months later. They're cute!

014.thumb.JPG.501d994512580c247f8ad212fa36c4fe.JPG

As far as merchandise goes, for years they didn't have a shirt that just said "DisneySEA" or "Disneyland" on it, but now they do!

015.thumb.JPG.352df642784c038fbae4294e8f554520.JPG

I do love the Tokyo Disney merchandise. It's so loud and obnoxious but I love it!

016.thumb.jpg.e4545c0ef34d63b75e973feddd7b2574.jpg

If you are "Happy as a Rainbow" they've got a shirt for you, too!

017.thumb.JPG.6a607e94fe47eecd97b5130a788e87f6.JPG

I never get tired of just looking at photos of this park. Everywhere you look it's just amazing!

018.thumb.JPG.16843ab71cdb98614288c2dfab39d1f3.JPG

Hello, Aquatopia....

019.thumb.JPG.a55657f1e977d89d3880a09de7dad669.JPG

For years I've been calling Aquatopia the "most amazing POINTLESS ride ever made" but that's not true... it DOES have a point...

020.thumb.JPG.b48774a867ad0a7dedd708f1f9a7b609.JPG

...and that is to make you HAPPY!

021.thumb.JPG.ceb5f277f008226187c2aa17750b5b63.JPG

It is IMPOSSIBLE to come off this totally pointless ride smiling and grinning as big as possible. It seriously is one of my favorite rides of the entire resort....and I have no idea why! lol

022.thumb.JPG.783079e6f8c81dbb6b27934ec34430a7.JPG

When the line is 30 minutes for Aquatopia, running both sides, you know it's a busy day at the park!

023.thumb.JPG.6ef253ce470130dfab548bfc53ca6f17.JPG

Hey! Look who we found!!!

024.thumb.JPG.4bf1b23e73e1d8de43a7ab7a60033721.JPG

We love you ShellieMay!

025.thumb.JPG.504771351f1e08367573f90dca76094b.JPG

Let's go play with some toys....

026.thumb.JPG.2a81593dfbae31a37c523850d3c84413.JPG

There are some people who find this entrance to Toy Story Mania really creepy...

027.thumb.JPG.c4367c0b0a26c159917afedca4deda46.JPG

I think it's awesome. I love the Disney-themed throwback to the classic "Luna Park" style entrances. And this area looking amazing at night!

028.thumb.JPG.57144d659b8f10a6a7118d92d38de73e.JPG

And yes, that says 150 minutes. Toy Story Mania is still CRAZY popular in Japan! Let's be honest, there is where the likes of Nintendo, Sega, Capcom, and Konami come from.... The Japanese LOVE their video games and this attraction is a perfect example of that!

029.thumb.JPG.654506fcc0c8c8038a23ca92a2b1c28c.JPG

So when we do a "full day" at one of the Tokyo Disney parks, we normally will escape during the afternoon peak times and head out to one of our favorite local areas because the parks can get VERY busy and you sometimes need a break! I'm kind of intrigued by the "Human-Related Incident" that was causing a train delay today!

030.thumb.jpg.423164e2209b5ea9dcccc37aef1bc23f.jpg

About 15 minutes away from Tokyo Disney is a fairly large shopping area called LaLaPort. It's a great area to just chill at and has some of our favorite shops in Japan... such as....

031.thumb.jpg.1de47c4ab3a4f6c8c50fe0d1ff380746.jpg

The Disney Store!!! Yes. We left Tokyo Disney to go to The Disney Store. DON'T JUDGE!!!!

032.thumb.jpg.dbb56fa5fc52b4718663d70a050b96fd.jpg

They are cactuses. WHY ARE THEY CACTUSES!!! PLEASE! SOMEONE!!! TELL ME WHY THEY ARE CACTUSES!!!!

033.thumb.jpg.3729cf7cc3d6d2cda56870eec95093bc.jpg

They had a special line of Chip N Dale Rescue Rangers stuff and that's amazing!

034.thumb.jpg.041e8c450cae3f39594296b5a0b2f050.jpg

This now sits in our house.

035.thumb.jpg.854cfdff9a621d089c7264b69d562f49.jpg

Gadget is so hot....and she has a roller coaster. So yeah... instant furry girlfriend material right there!

036.thumb.jpg.5e70a215c1264433ba664086c7fab897.jpg

Capsule machines will always be a part of Japanese culture that I love. You can just find the weirdest most amazing stuff in them. For example...

037.thumb.jpg.d1b92402864f6b699095f3922b85a908.jpg

HATS FOR CATS!!!!

038.thumb.jpg.4de9a85cde6faa69bba00888a5535192.jpg

Hats for cats has been a "thing" in Japan for a couple of visits now. Do we think the cats like the hats? They never look that pleased to be wearing them in the photos....

039.thumb.jpg.081d45eb42594ca3455940e787f8b431.jpg

Animal Crossing fans... tell us what this is!

040.thumb.jpg.4f537c681ae607babac53802a3bf13da.jpg

We took a quick look into Daiso to get Kristen some clay.... and poop.

041.thumb.jpg.bb5f17b728e119aa5d0a60156d8e917e.jpg

We may or may not have visited every single Pokemon Center in the country of Japan.

042.thumb.jpg.9531f61006cec24e031828d481f75808.jpg

I mean... gotta catch them all... right?

042a.thumb.jpg.0ddd8dda971fd7a042e9f88fc0640983.jpg

"You want to buy a Tower Records, Eduardo?" Yes, they still exist in Japan!

043.thumb.JPG.26cb679520ebd1f64491f3d9d0ccc951.JPG

I love all the town mascots in Japan!

044.thumb.jpg.d27683a178d06029036cfd91c5e329b1.jpg

I guess this is "Elderly Funassyi???"

045.thumb.jpg.e5817e0d8a284d5cf6241bd345ac729f.jpg

Did you ever see Lost In Translations where Bill Murray goes to Japan as a "washed up actor" to do ads for a beverage company?

046.thumb.jpg.bfe651fc32bb0cd6da67e405c8f408c9.jpg

Well... that really exists! lol And while I know this George Clooney Nespresso ad was more than just in Japan, I don't know why but as soon as I saw it, it just made me think of Lost In Translation! *GREAT* film, BTW. If you haven't seen it, and you're interested in Japan, you NEED to see it!

IMG_1634.thumb.JPG.dec83bdf17e34a8ebdac994de1bec192.JPG

WHY. ARE. THEY. CACTUSES?!?!?!?

We'll end this part of the trip report here! Next up we head back to DisneySEA for some night time, volcano exploding fun! Now....

Yep... Infectious song, an incredible number of animatronics, Chandu... There are few Disney attractions I would go as far as to call “perfect” but this is among them.
