D23 Destination D 2018 Updates from TPR

Recommended Posts

This weekend D23 (the official Disney Fan Club) is hosting their latest event at the Walt Disney World Resort, this time in honor of Mickey Mouse's 90th birthday celebration! For those not familiar with D23, this is the Disney-owned and operated branch of the company responsible for curating and sharing content from across the Walt Disney Company via the D23 website, the D23 magazine and events across the globe, including the bi-annual D23 Expo and the bi-annual Destination D events.

The D23 Expo is a huge event (check out our coverage from the 2017 D23 Expo here) bringing the difference areas of the company together under one convention center roof for three days of Comic Con-style fun... A forward looking event with some reflection on Disney past. The Destination D events are described as the inverse, focusing more on Disney's past with a small look to the future.

Be sure to follow along with this thread to see all of the content shared with us throughout the weekend, along with any exciting news that may be shared along the way! Follow us on Twitter for live coverage through the next two days and look to this thread for any major updates and end of day recaps as they are posted!

On Friday, November 16th, select members of the media were given the chance to preview the Walt Disney Archives exhibit Mickey's Magical Kingdoms and the Mickey's of Glendale pop-up shop, both offerings exclusive to Destination D 2018 event guests this weekend! The new Archives exhibit features items and images of note in Disney history, some of which haven't been seen frequently by the public eye! Mickey's of Glendale is a satellite pop-up shop version of the Walt Disney Imagineering store found in Glendale, California. Extremely rare to be seen by public eyes, is this one of a kind Engineer Mickey plush character. Many will recognize this Mickey as the one that Walt road the Disneyland Railroad with during the opening of Disneyland Park in 1955. The Walt Disney Archives has maintained this storied piece for many years and took great care in sending it to Florida for its display during the Destination D event.

We also had the chance to learn about the new Disney Aspire program from two cast members actively participating in the program, as well as one leader that currently supports cast in the program. Disney Aspire is a new educational assistance program for hourly cast members that enables eligible cast to pursue their education dreams with up to one undergraduate degree and one master's degree paid for (along with school materials) by the Walt Disney Company. The program does not require the area of study to be related to the cast member's current role and there is no expected time commitment in which the cast member must remain working for Disney after completing their classes or degrees. It is a huge opportunity for personal growth and education to be fostered by the Walt Disney Company!

https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2018/11/exciting-star-wars-galaxys-edge-news-from-destination-d/

Earlier today, Disney Parks, Experiences and Consumer Products Chairman Bob Chapek shared some exciting news about Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at D23’s Destination D event at Walt Disney World Resort. During his presentation, Bob shared two videos, which for the first time ever, revealed the names of the two major attractions that will be part of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge on opening day at Disneyland and Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

The first, entitled Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run, puts guests behind the controls of the most famous ship in the galaxy in one of three unique flight crew roles.

Our second attraction, which puts guests in the middle of an epic battle between the Resistance and the First Order, is called Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance. As you can see from this video, which was shot in the actual attraction, both the stakes, and the excitement are running high in this epic Star Wars cliffhanger!

These two new incredible experiences – paired with the land’s dynamic elements and optional interactive integration with the Play Disney Parks app – invite guests to become galactic travelers and live their own Star Wars stories in a galaxy far, far away.

But that’s not all! When you think about Star Wars, I’m sure that the iconic music of legendary composer John Williams comes to mind. Today, Bob shared more exciting news in that Oscar-winning composer John Williams is creating new and original Star Wars themes exclusively for the land! Bob shared a stirring preview of the all-new music, recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra at Abbey Road Studios. You can listen to the preview as well in this new video, which showcases recent construction progress at Disneyland and Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

And there’s so much more to do at this exotic outpost. For example, you can visit a street market in Black Spire Outpost, shop at food stalls where you can enjoy delicacies like blue milk, or visit the Cantina where you can see an old friend Rex, as well as encounter creatures and characters that are hallmarks of the Star Wars universe. Guests from across the galaxy can experience this new larger-than-life land at Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World Resort beginning in 2019.

Adding to the galactic excitement, Bob shared new details about the currently in-development Star Wars resort coming to Walt Disney World. This groundbreaking experience is unlike any resort experience you’ve ever seen. From the moment you board your launch pod, it’s a fully-immersive, multi-day Star Wars adventure aboard a luxury starship complete with high-end dining, space-view cabins and all of the exciting action you would expect from an authentic Star Wars experience.

I can’t wait to share more details for both Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge and this unique multi-day adventure as we get closer to launching these projects, but in the meantime, tell me which new piece of Star Wars news are you most excited about?

https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2018/11/new-nighttime-spectaculars-beauty-the-beast-sing-along-announced-for-epcot/

Just moments ago at D23’s Destination D: Celebrating Mickey Mouse, Disney Parks, Experiences and Consumer Products Chairman Bob Chapek shared an exciting update on the multiyear transformation of Epcot, including details on new nighttime entertainment planned for the park and additions to World Showcase.

428741502_ScreenShot2018-11-17at12_05_16PM.thumb.png.1613ff4cea976601afa9f46ae0098106.png

Among the announcements were updates on a new nighttime spectacular planned to open at the park in 2020. This new show will celebrate how Disney music inspires people around the world, and will feature massive floating set pieces, custom-built LED panels, choreographed moving fountains, lights, pyrotechnics and lasers.

But before that new show debuts, there will be a limited-time experience Epcot fans will love, called “Epcot Forever,” which will debut in fall 2019 and will feature classic Epcot tunes. “Epcot Forever” will begin with a spark of imagination that swells into an epic spectacle of fireworks, music, lighting, lasers, and special effects kites.

Bob also announced the name of the “Ratatouille” experience coming to the France pavilion, which will be called Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure. He also shared that a new guest offering will soon debut at the France pavilion at World Showcase (in addition to “Impressions de France”) – a brand new “Beauty and the Beast” sing-along created by Don Hahn, producer of the animated and live-action “Beauty and the Beast” films. And, the Canada pavilion is also in the process of updating the existing O Canada! 360-degree show!

I don't even know where to start. The fact that the promo for Rise of the Resistance was filmed inside the attraction itself is mind blowing. And Smuggler's Run is the first time I've been excited for a simulator since Back to the Future (if it's even a simulator, who knows what these rides will really be...). John Williams composing new music for Galaxy's Edge? Oh my. And that concept art for Mickey's Runaway Railway is gorgeous (if the music from Mine Train through Nature's Wonderland briefly appears in that ride I'll cry so much). Who can even be mad about Guardians in Epcot when we're getting this impressive new ride system!! And now a Fall 2019 trip is a must to see Epcot Forever. There's way too much to be excited for, the fact that 3 new cruise ships being added is basically just a sidenote in this presentation shows how ridiculous these announcements are.

THIS is the "Wide Awake " Disney I've been wanting for since the World kind of stagnated around 2007. I'd strongly prefer not to have every single thing be based on existing characters, especially in regards to all of the night-time spectaculars, but the additions of Guardians of the Galaxy, Star Wars, Ratatouille, Space Restuarant, Star Wars Hotel, Runaway Railway, even the new surprise offerings just announced in France and Canada pavillions...just a crazy amount of expansion at once and super exciting to re-visit the parks and spend money there for this stuff.

Two interesting notes though...No information on Tron Coaster, and still no new parades at Disney World. I don't know the significance of either of those things but hopefully something will come .

Incredible how much is going on at Disney World. That Reflections hotel looks awesome, any idea where that is being built?

Not too thrilled about Illuminations becoming what looks like World of Color East, but it was inevitable I guess. Disney Park's best work is when they get away from their IPs and make the attractions themselves into their own iconic brand.

Those AT-ATs are very impressive. That gets me very excited for that attraction.

Following the Disney Parks and Resorts presentation at Destination D, we had the chance to experience a day full of presentations (some of which did not allow photography) ranging in focus from Disney animation to Mickey collectibles. The day concluded with an incredible sneak peek at the upcoming film Mary Poppins Returns with a significant focus on the music of the film. The duo behind the score and songs of the film, Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman appeared live to share a first look at the work they'd done, with Marc Shaiman performing a few portions of the song live. It was a great way to close out the day!

We had a chance to meet with Becky Cline (Director, Walt Disney Archives), Don Hahn (Producer), Mark Hehn (Disney animator) and John Pomeroy (Disney historian).

For those that didn't know, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit was Walt's first major successful animated character...

9.thumb.JPG.2dadb0dfd89d1da4f8af11fc79dfc343.JPG

But it was this clause in the contract that lost him the rights to Oswald... And it was the loss of Oswald was the event that spurred Walt to come up with another animated character--Mickey Mouse.

This was a unique animated short we were shown from 1942...

Look at who distributed the short!

19.thumb.JPG.5bde55d6fdeb31335fafb9e3552efbeb.JPG

The story of the short is that Minnie and Pluto are learning about the importance of saving meat grease and oil to be turned in for use in the war.

But the imagery was at times a bit intense.

It’s a good time to be a Disney fan.

Fun fact! I auditioned and was called back TWICE to “star” in that Smugglers Run spot. So like, casting was quite a process for this little teaser. And in the final cut, they don’t even show the actors’ faces.

  • 2 weeks later...

The final day of the D23 Destination D 2018 was focused on a lot of company history surrounding Mickey Mouse's 90th birthday. Several of the presentations had photo/video restrictions but here are some photos from the segments we were allowed to capture!
