Robb & Elissa in Japan - 2015!

Recommended Posts

Amazing trip reports!

Seeing that picture of the standup train really made me miss the little piece of Japanese rides we just recently lost (Skyrider at CW). It wasn't the absolute best coaster, but whenever I rode it, always made me think about heading over to Japan someday. Now it's gone, I just wanna head over there even more.

Speaking of TOGO, do you guys have any video of one of those crazy TOGO para troopers in action?

That inside storage barn was one of the awesome parts of this ride, IMhO.

And then - it wasn't the end, with more encounters! And with all the crazy

dialogue I could not understand at all - priceless.

Great video Robb.

Any tips for getting a good DisneySea day and how did the rain affect the lines for Disneyland? That's the second TR of yours I've seen with 30 min waits for Journey and I've never been able to time it right for TDS. I've been on a snowy day for TDL where everything was walk-on by afternoon (seems the Japanese are a lot less tolerant of snowy days than rainy ones) although it was a shame that day was before Once Upon A Time, but for all my TDS trips I've hit lines of 3-4 hours from opening until the lines close just after fantasmic (thank god that year was when they decided to try single rider for tower of terror).

I'm starting to think I need to flip my logic, maybe since TDS has quite a lot of big indoor rides so I think that it seems to be on bad weather days that most people also go there and do Disneyland on good weather days perhaps? I know Disney also has a lot of indoor rides but more outdoor ones than sea does. My 1st trip to TDS was after a few days of snow and the sun came out and the park was packed and time after that I decided to try during really bad weather but went too far it was torrential rain and wind so most of the rides were closed.

IMG_0026.thumb.JPG.5a75d9b81e9460ed30c46134fb1d91b7.JPG

At opening this was the sign, most people went to tomorrowland at opening or to an indoor ride, lines went down by 15-30 minutes about 2 hours in and the lines dropped off completely by 2PM ironically around the time they got most of the closed rides open

Any tips for getting a good DisneySea day and how did the rain affect the lines for Disneyland?

Our Tuesday/Wednesday days were pretty light at both parks. I think it has less to do with weather and more to do with timing. Sunday/Monday were significantly busier at both parks. We saw 60-90 minute lines for Journey on Monday, but 25-45 on Tuesday/Wednesday.

Rain most certainly will affect the crowds, but on a weekend day, not as much as you might think.

Yes, I do miss the old Jaws ride in Florida--rolling around in front of a bunch of video screens isn't nearly as much fun as good old physical effects.

Thanks for the advice, maybe it's just me stuck with the Korean school year deciding my holidays that leaves me with 3-4 hour lines. Apart from either the last week of July or Christmas week, I get some time off in February every 2-3 years as a reward but I think like Korean schools, a lot of the Japanese schools are probably closed then. Maybe I just need to wait even longer between trips and hope the Korean Thanksgiving lines up nicely with a weekend to give me a 5 day break

Japanese Jaws = Best Jaws. I love the amount of effort the boat captains put into their performance. Makes an awesome ride even better. Really hope to get back to USJ some day so I can experience it again.

And that video looked amazing. Thanks for shooting it!

(Sorry, But I am catching up, here)

Also, seeing those photos of Gao... I can still remember the smell of tires burning on some of the track, lol!

Great park MItsui Greenland is, definitely.

Turns out we have a KidZania here in Korea too, not sure how it would compare to Japan but was quite surprised how many options they also have: http://www.kidzania.co.kr/web/eng/facility

I'm sure it's VERY similar. We have seen 3 or 4 of them now, and from the outside that all looked pretty much the same. Even though we've only been in the one, I'm sure they all feature a similar layout and amount of activities.

Our next day took us to the town of "Beppu" which offers quite a bit to do in Southern Japan. One nice thing about the way we put this trip together is that we had a lot of days where people could just go and do whatever they wanted based on preferences. For our group, we either had been to parks in the area like Kijima before, or wanted to do something different, so while some of the group went to go ride one of the few wooden rollers in the country, we went and did a selection of more random things this day, starting with Hello Kitty and ending with monkeys!

This is a BIG day of 100+ photos so be sure to get through all of them! Lots of fun stuff in here!

beppu_001.thumb.jpg.0f4c5d129a942d020240f917fc1cbb14.jpg

Today was one of the days we all split up to do different things. While some of the group went out to Kijima to ride Jupiter, some of us wanted to go see one of Japan's biggest celebrities...

beppu_002.thumb.jpg.909e34a20f4f8639d7bf35f7b83b1742.jpg

HELLO KITTY!!!!

beppu_003.thumb.jpg.0f877dde53e04e652453708fa0dccc40.jpg

For some it was about riding one of four wooden roller coasters in the country....

beppu_004.thumb.jpg.88c1499a9021fa0feb56371505a350d6.jpg

for us we wanted to check out Sanrio characters, Ocean Sunfish, and Monkeys!

beppu_005.thumb.jpg.5db5c91b620e77a3ba548978ad145f35.jpg

Our day started off on a train named after a video game character. This was the "Sonic" train! lol

beppu_006.thumb.jpg.ae6b5707c1191550eac5c194075fdae8.jpg

Each train comes equipped with an emergency door penis.

beppu_007.thumb.jpg.59826685a29b31181205dd207bc08c6d.jpg

Yes! We are in the area where everything is going to get sugary sweet!

beppu_008.thumb.jpg.9bf1ff93567d382d21e2883f95b09e85.jpg

Harmonyland is basically the home to Hello Kitty and all her cutesy Japanese friends.

beppu_009.thumb.jpg.5a31159de3b690de2ce0a6a2af16e8b6.jpg

It's a legit theme park which much of it being themed better than 95% of the parks in the USA.

beppu_010.thumb.jpg.0c9da5991a0c971f7eebf661b67d1d40.jpg

And yes... you can meet Hello Kitty!

beppu_011.thumb.jpg.855ff8476ddf290c8527497f170ff229.jpg

And many of her friends are here, too!

beppu_012.thumb.jpg.19773b43aaa8299068ff18737e9a9a11.jpg

We figured we'd get the Hello Kitty roller coaster out of the way first.

beppu_013.thumb.jpg.a5b65def7a19056de3712e8a7957e6bc.jpg

Yes, it's a Vekoma Roller Skater, but it's a completely custom model and it's actually really good! It feels more like a "mine train" and less like a "Roller Skater."

beppu_014.thumb.jpg.1ebf0195445586b792854479a50e5352.jpg

Some funky little pops of airtime on this ride, too!

beppu_015.thumb.jpg.b65e4062a8c63ae009d924dab8f969b7.jpg

Next we hit up the controversial "Hello Kitty Train."

beppu_016.thumb.jpg.e63a402256b61ffbb8aea31b954ade4b.jpg

The controversy comes with the coaster nerds. Yes it runs on "tubular steel track" and is powered on it's own gravity for some of the trip.

beppu_017.thumb.jpg.fb1d70de23bc694194b2d6669e4e76da.jpg

The girls don't give a crap what coaster nerds think, they just want to ride to get down the hill to the Sanrio Boat Ride!

beppu_018.thumb.jpg.8275f4071c0ee145a22002f6ca8875d6.jpg

But as you can see, the ride does have familiar looking rails...

beppu_019.thumb.jpg.b8a2a2c399a291c2b68bed5cb197ce7e.jpg

It does climb a lift hill on one of the legs of the ride...

beppu_020.thumb.jpg.b599f06d99d803341d43c4038e788cfc.jpg

...and it does coast downhill with the speed controlled by the operator. So what do you think?

beppu_021.thumb.jpg.d61239d9655127581fc744dca1dbe76e.jpg

The girls say "Anyone who counts this as a roller coaster is not someone we would ever go out on a date with!"

beppu_022.thumb.jpg.8d211aa73876528bef3620a53dfa6d81.jpg

Next up was the star attraction of the park... the Sanrio Boat Ride!

beppu_023.thumb.jpg.c4595ef641d16a31c9a5c6db61d5cdc2.jpg

It's sort of like "It's a Small World meets a LOT of Sugar!"

beppu_024.thumb.jpg.0cc58b0f637276db8b0c535897503d4d.jpg

The storyline is simple - All of Hello Kitty's friends get an invitation to her party....

beppu_025.thumb.jpg.77d9552ae9473894a9d6356cd663c558.jpg

And then they spend the first part of the ride getting ready to go!

beppu_026.thumb.jpg.04cc4473ffed0fe8bb7e283eadfe2df6.jpg

And yes, a penguin (Badtz Maru) gets spanked. This right here makes it an AWESOME ride!

beppu_027.thumb.jpg.60f8283794c3c48c77ae2893133d4bec.jpg

My Melody & Kuromi are both going to the party....

beppu_028.thumb.jpg.423ef3066b4d1c5c3b2a695670430621.jpg

Pom Pom Purin seems pretty happy to have gotten his invite!

beppu_029.thumb.jpg.62a915e38a6d66cb7d9a507605e95081.jpg

And then they all take off to the party! Badtz Maru chooses jetpack to get there...

beppu_030.thumb.jpg.7af8c408f75827436f531639072abcd6.jpg

My Melody takes some sort of dirigible.

beppu_031.thumb.jpg.500933d29a8c6582820e2c1b07c1c558.jpg

Yay! They gang is all here!

beppu_032.thumb.jpg.527eb2c02497d89b39ce87096568222b.jpg

And let's celebrate Hello Kitty!

beppu_033.thumb.jpg.129a792291fb4b795b254cf202c2d3ac.jpg

"The rest of you all suck! My Melody is my TRUE friend!'

Here is the ride-through of the Hello Kitty Boat Ride. We got a lot of complaints about this on YouTube, which kind of surprised me. Yes, I get it that the ride is very sickening "sweet" but it's also a totally legit, very well done ride! If this was in Orlando, it would be one of the better dark rides in the area! Check it out:

beppu_034.thumb.jpg.9cfed11b45b1838e3720225cbf555bb2.jpg

After the boat ride, Kristen went to do this sort of Sanrio "Ninja Warrior" course.

beppu_035.thumb.jpg.dc086076cb85215e1336d35018e6c63b.jpg

There was a lot of money bars...

beppu_036.thumb.jpg.646f7216c0ee1bd43a6c0af1fe79848d.jpg

slides...

beppu_037.thumb.jpg.e334715c0ab39390161172c79bc72fee.jpg

climbing walls...

beppu_038.thumb.jpg.98bb3b279719a8afc927830e4096f9f3.jpg

And falling on faces.

beppu_039.thumb.jpg.79f0bffe7f6742a2be3a589846698e86.jpg

She is a true Sanrio Ninja Warrior!

beppu_040.thumb.jpg.043c28dd9a77029dabf0d1384bf13e15.jpg

The park is really a lot of fun, and all the rides are totally themed to Sanrio.

beppu_041.thumb.jpg.68634448e53ec40f19d7f2f1e953e948.jpg

The Ferris Wheel has each cabin themed to a different character.

beppu_042.thumb.jpg.486a15441d5c187304b3d31996fa043c.jpg

And there are a lot of different Sanrio characters!

beppu_043.thumb.jpg.15b8306cd2ac116e12e174b1b096c3c4.jpg

There goes a few of them...

beppu_044.thumb.jpg.5aaa15bff96eb136002b1a0b33cf3ae4.jpg

The girls got the Little Twin Stars car.

beppu_045.thumb.jpg.c173fbccdc358cd926aaeadb1cd1bc6b.jpg

Hello Little Twin Stars!

beppu_046.thumb.jpg.5ea73c8338f1db61ca08ef8a967a985e.jpg

And YAY! We got Badtz Maru!

beppu_047.thumb.jpg.5c35b5ddc0eaca4c32f63ff943ad8c26.jpg

We are all bad penguins.

beppu_048.thumb.jpg.6282f69f85488f5985c89d0f955bbf1b.jpg

The park most certainly seems to have an "old and new" part, with the newer, more well themed section being towards the front of the park...

beppu_049.thumb.jpg.79b8a7c9405abcf2efeff364c126dbf0.jpg

and the less themed, more "pavement" part towards the back.

beppu_050.thumb.jpg.f3076362c41b6ed6369c48c4584fabcc.jpg

The girls loved it!

beppu_051.thumb.jpg.43e8fbb535014dc521405b11891116a1.jpg

And yes, there is a little powered coaster here, too.

beppu_052.thumb.jpg.3d74c7b523b7d2edeab2ab2eb1946e93.jpg

There are just so many things wrong with this picture! lol

beppu_053.thumb.jpg.d47fceedab03b3d19fa1d1ceacd3d396.jpg

I love these random little "put your kids on display" rides that you see all over Japan!

beppu_054.thumb.jpg.811fd995cb66828756fb06ec0c11bcfd.jpg

Hello Kitty themed Tea Cups.

beppu_055.thumb.jpg.326309d9723f9dcde673c40e6fbc1bd5.jpg

Hello Kitty themed roulette wheel to the death.

beppu_056.thumb.jpg.9c4ca1e1af14082a07b0058c4641b061.jpg

The parade was about to start and this area went from empty to totally packed in about 90 seconds!

beppu_057.thumb.jpg.5dee8c9a7b90176a8b9f79f2234eb255.jpg

More sugary sweet Sanrio stuff...

beppu_058.thumb.jpg.7fdea78a4a30d3f3763232181237baa3.jpg

More Hello Kitty....

beppu_059.thumb.jpg.7b481c49a47670204d41050fde892d13.jpg

...and lots of bubbles!

beppu_060.thumb.jpg.68087a61ce07d5c5dec7704be9d89b08.jpg

Elissa hanging out with her favorite character.

beppu_061.thumb.jpg.48ad5daa04c9a7ea1a2b8da9131c8203.jpg

The girls just chillin'

beppu_062.thumb.jpg.b1eb129a5caf093567303eb94702cb85.jpg

Yes, because headbands make you awesome!

beppu_063.thumb.jpg.dbbcdb93f1cbdd180a13cd4a44a08f94.jpg

I'm not exactly sure what this character is...

beppu_064.thumb.jpg.0daba3fcadc9915599d18f4a97b27c1d.jpg

but apparently he's totally naked!!! lol

beppu_065.thumb.jpg.45ef6d5b3491fce41d20b241d8b46d79.jpg

All the Hello Kitty stuff you could possibly want!

beppu_066.thumb.jpg.007fe69ce31cfc8be2052b1618d25018.jpg

Tons of plush...

beppu_067.thumb.jpg.8f3b5422836629362714c8018413fe15.jpg

seriously TONS of it!

beppu_068.thumb.jpg.42c040e6af456cb87a5f6eed135eaa35.jpg

The umbrellas were amazing!

beppu_069.thumb.jpg.e9ab8d68694be92ed8e378a86d804220.jpg

And plenty of Hello Kitty swag to take home and make you cool.

beppu_070.thumb.jpg.fcf3d2f772bfb1013ee5f234db9b3138.jpg

Kristen is channeling her inner Pom Pom Purin at Harmonyland.

beppu_071.thumb.jpg.c56c8f868c905a97ae782042c0917d4e.jpg

Next we went to do some more random stuff in Beppu.

beppu_072.thumb.jpg.bc8b15b14894a88bbafe62258f9f6aff.jpg

Found at the train station....

beppu_073.thumb.jpg.aed1e697eca1bf80bbaa7dfb307d1f5a.jpg

Kristen looks absolutely thrilled about this! lol

beppu_074.thumb.jpg.ea75a2917360f2a86f3820b101df6f3e.jpg

This was the zoological park which included an aquarium and a "monkey park."

beppu_075.thumb.jpg.aef09011c205e2a8bb5628b996b2ad5d.jpg

Yup, there were sharks...

beppu_076.thumb.jpg.e35b6c9172a939b1ac6ad513917865a7.jpg

...and some big ass ugly fish.

beppu_077.thumb.jpg.1c811510c33e290cbd256507b0dc30af.jpg

And these really screwed up looking sand worm things!

beppu_078.thumb.jpg.167cd1ec0252a0242392847316a51926.jpg

Dr. Shrunk from Animal Crossing was here, too!

beppu_079.thumb.jpg.2c8821e801da9f6b2eca6803626900fe.jpg

But this is what we were really here for...the Ocean Sunfish!

beppu_080.thumb.jpg.d0ed2f41ab6b586ea6f256a9ef87be05.jpg

Kristen is obsessed with this really bizarre looking creature.

beppu_081.thumb.jpg.2ab17745475d25270f49c936f79c8168.jpg

She calls it the "half fish" because it looks like someone cut it in half.

beppu_082.thumb.jpg.34b2408ffe6cb24b1fb94b7d3788ed0b.jpg

Make no mistake about it, this is one UGLY animal! WOW!

beppu_083.thumb.jpg.dfb80f604813738c9dbf260695e5cdad.jpg

But, it's also a very rare animal and they are difficult to keep in captivity (the USA only has one) and Kristen loves it, so we accept it...but man is it UGLY!!! lol

beppu_084.thumb.jpg.a9e778be279f3cbe323156807d282b35.jpg

Wait, what is this? The tortoise and the rabbit?

beppu_085.thumb.jpg.aa511dcf768787e7800b6bcd333a55a3.jpg

Oh, I get it...

beppu_086.thumb.jpg.6f62bde78e0e995a811e0cf4d4552718.jpg

Yup, they hang out together!

beppu_087.thumb.jpg.f6f8852029a12ddf8e9e662e87c0f123.jpg

In the "Never in America Department" we have the kids splash pool that is actually PART OF THE DOLPHIN ENCLOSURE! Yes!!!

beppu_088.thumb.jpg.c702ee1329a2bb48e4215209dd7339b2.jpg

You can see the kids splashing in the foreground and there are the dolphins swimming in the background!

beppu_089.thumb.jpg.f33babec5248e83d58ed3b9f77e077d6.jpg

From above you can get a better look at this.

beppu_090.thumb.jpg.50072c81fa3b6a1a5ed17ccb7fce924a.jpg

But it's Japan, so all they need to do is put up a sign, and people pay attention and obey it.

beppu_091.thumb.jpg.2f0962858de006a1fdba5e6f3adfc74f.jpg

If this sign was in America, instead of not throwing things at the dolphins, people would probably be smacking them with their selfie sticks or throwing their kids in the water. But in Japan, people actually obey the rules.

beppu_092.thumb.jpg.701952e88851cfdbfcfa4c4f31557951.jpg

Here's another dolphin enclosure where they allow people to get very close to them.

beppu_093.thumb.jpg.2ff37e23c172472e235c008f7377df0a.jpg

"Dolphins like the taste of human arms...don't put your hand in there, stupid!" And people respect this. (Yes, it IS too much to ask at our parks here in the USA.)

beppu_094.thumb.jpg.b00e174a755335022058de0dc4b683d0.jpg

Random stuff to do at the aquarium.

beppu_095.thumb.jpg.e6103be3637df7d619a4342cdef1caab.jpg

This chameleon took a liking to me and my cell phone.

beppu_096.thumb.jpg.37c92eed0afd12324e0b1ebcc48cbbea.jpg

It was awesome you could get so close to all the animals!

beppu_097.thumb.jpg.d5350bffc612b097551f17f3923b904f.jpg

Across the way was the "monkey park."

beppu_098.thumb.jpg.241e3a68bbf67e4928727da41d7bd162.jpg

We kind of knew what to expect here, but it sort of exceeded those expectations.

beppu_099.thumb.jpg.96e8653fb2879a72202a17767319c80b.jpg

You could either take this tram to get up to the monkeys, or you could walk.

beppu_100.thumb.jpg.255adc3081225951f26be849bad54a39.jpg

They monkeys were everywhere! And they really seemed to spend a lot of time grooming each other!

beppu_101.thumb.jpg.f49efc43b0f5a406c30ba11a2c982e5f.jpg

Some of them even groomed each others butts!

beppu_102.thumb.jpg.5dd125e123a5fb5b717b6fe8245ee47e.jpg

There were hundreds of them, just hanging out everywhere you turned.

beppu_103.thumb.jpg.316fb818ae709068a1bb29a816f056c4.jpg

"I find these monkeys are cooler to hang out with than most people!"

beppu_104.thumb.jpg.6f124979beca55b70ea30e6ada43f920.jpg

Monkey Boobies.

beppu_105.thumb.jpg.2887e9c838db781838ea0dd2223a0bdc.jpg

Is this one alive? Who knows!

beppu_106.thumb.jpg.c2ed0ce2cc2dd0e60d0f071aca2c8b2d.jpg

They were everywhere! Climbing around and pretty much didn't care about the people around them.

beppu_107.thumb.jpg.9ed0492f593fda8dd0f2177cae991230.jpg

So many of them had monkey babies.

They menu was totally bizarre! Yes, those "Mayonnaise" pizzas had some sort of cream based sauce instead of normal pizza sauce! (the original pizzas were actually pretty good!)

Dude in the ferris wheel totally looked like me, but Japanese.

Also, I totally need to get back to Japan for the Hello Kitty park. And I'm a straight guy. Looks way more interesting than anything in America!

I loved the free day options on this trip. It was so hard to decide what to do since there were so many things to see and do and I would have had a great time no matter what I chose, but I stand by my choice to go see Nagasaki, which was very interesting. The Sanrio park and the monkey island looked pretty cool too and I'm glad to see pictures of it. I'd probably do a trip to Beppu and some of its attractions if I'm in Kyushu again.

I'm kind of curious, I remember Robb saying in an older post or TR (sorry if that wasn't stated and I've accidentally made something up) that blue-fall was the best drop tower in the world. I'm wondering if that is still true with the opening of Lex Luthor, Zumanjaro and what is probably the biggest contender to steal that crown: Falcons Fury.

I would put it Falcon > Blue Fall > Zumanjaro > Lex Luthor

I dunno, though. Blue Fall is still REALLY REALLY good. And Falcons is just really different. I'm not even sure I should compare them.

Thanks for the clarification, I really need to get out to Florida eventually and try FF. I guess since FF is different from all the other drop towers, it'd be like trying to compare one of the Intamin woodies to an RMC coaster. Both of them would be world class wooden coasters for what they are but different enough experiences that they can't be lumped under the same category.
