Universal Studios Hollywood (USH) Discussion Thread

Recommended Posts

I can't imagine them not getting the funding if both stars are committed.

Hollywood is weird like that. They don't focus on the stars, they focus on the franchise. I have no clue about the box office receipts from the first two Bill & Ted movies, but the fact that they're cult hits means nothing to Hollywood. They could have the dream cast of all A-list actors in the movie. If the suits don't think the name on the franchise will bring money, it won't get made.

Edit - Look at Kevin Smith's latest movies (Red State and Tusk (due next year)). He moved away from the Hollywood machine and began self-funding his movies to make what he wants. Please note, not crowdfunded like Kickstarter or something. He spent his own money to make the movies he wanted to make and had complete oversight of every aspect. He didn't have to bend to a studio's will. After filming and editing he toured the movies around, again entirely self-funded. Red State was made for approximately $5 million and has made back a TON of money (in comparison) that Kevin Smith then distributed to the cast and crew. It is the only solution to get around the studio bullcrap that is everywhere nowadays. Also, I just want to add that Red State was an excellent film and I can't wait to see what insanity Tusk brings to the table.

Hollywood only cares about one thing---$$$. Your statement is true when it comes to $200+ million budget films, where needing to become a franchise is almost essential to get a return. On smaller budget films, "being a cult hit" is a HUGE advantage, since they know it has a built in following that will most certainly see it at the box office, buy merch, and buy the DVD/iTunes/Amazon.

You are correct about the loyalty of the fans. The issue, however, comes with the size of that fanbase. When you see a huge base of support online, you're still seeing an extremely small percentage of the public. You could have all of the entertainment sites in the world clamoring for a sequel. Hell, you might even fool the studio into making it. You know what happens then? Everyone that wanted it goes to see it and the film still only makes $8 million when it opens. Unless they make the movie on a shoestring budget, no studio would ever willingly finance that.

^I can't imagine Bill & Ted's commanding a huge budget...

Using your Kevin Smith example and cult classic films, Clerks 2 had a budget of $5 million and made $24 million at the box office+whatever it did in DVD sales...

I agree with Larry. There's no way it doesn't get made if the stars are on board. There will most definitely be haggling over the budgets, but I can't see them passing on it.

2016?? - Resort Hotel - Rumor - (12/31/13) According to Screamscape sources, Steve Burke (CEO of Comcast) made a curious comment in a holiday message to the staff of Universal Studios Hollywood the other day. Possibly overlooked by many, but mixed in with comments regarding a great number of things, Steve also mentioned that “the largest hotel project in the U.S. is coming to Universal Studios Hollywood!”

Errrr… Excuse me? We know Universal’s newly approved Evolution plan for the property does give them clearance to build three on-site resort hotels at the Hollywood property. So clearly they are planning to start this off with a bang by building something very large. If I had to guess, they are going to want to have at least the first phase of this unknown new hotel ready to take advantage of the opening of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Keep your ears open and eyes peeled.

^Both those hotels have about 450 rooms each. Roughly 900 on-site rooms isn't that many when you consider the fact that aside from the park itself, Universal is a MAJOR business hub for the film/TV industry. So you have business travelers mixed in with tourists.

But anyways...

Perhaps he was referring to the Cabana Bay resort in his letter?

The press release for the ground breaking of that hotel specifically says:

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Loews Hotels & Resorts, a wholly owned-subsidiary of Loews Corporation (NYSE: L), today announced that the company and Universal Parks & Resorts have broken ground on Universal’s Cabana Bay Beach Resort, currently one of the largest hotels under construction in the United States.

^I'm really excited too!

USH will have the ultimate family attraction---everyone loves the minions! And the flat ride/playground area! The park is pretty crowded now with all the construction walls, so moving people back to that side of the park should make things more enjoyable too.

Does USH have the same fun construction walls that USF have? Where you scan the movie poster and it comes to life?

Nope. USH, did, however, put a nice wrap on the walls to look like building fronts that would fit in with Baker & French streets.
