Yesterday I got a little sneak peek at the new Jabbawockeez Theater at Luxor. It's being built in the old IMAX theater and it's great! It's a smaller theater but it's really nice. They reversed the set up (the back of the theater is where the movie screen used to be and the stage is where the back of the theater was) and you cannot tell it was ever used as anything else. It's has a really cool Tron vibe to it, which is an automatic plus for me. I think it's going to be a really great show and much needed for Luxor's currently weak line up of entertainment.

^Too bad it wasn't the Criss Angel theater...

Anyways...here is what is or is not going on in Vegas at the moment:

FountainBleau.jpg.2f103411851b26e6307e870782527edb.jpg

Fountainbleau...still an expensive eyesore.

Venetian...still no condos!

Speed: the Ride & unfinished skywheel...still rusting

SLS1.jpg.fba969d3a4f4663adf28b12ca1f935b0.jpg

Speaking of Speed...this sign is all that remains

SLS2.jpg.c13a33f9ef1c1a9066a33de57242a857.jpg

SLS: Opening in 2014 without a gaming license (the owner is a shady nightclub operator who had to outsource the operation of the Sahara casino before he shut it down). This hotel is brought to you by foreign investors looking for citizenship. No Joke.

Harmon_Aria.jpg.2f38622b2f63888b8d184976c1541e48.jpg

One of these things is brand new. The other is a condemned building. You decide.

Linq1.jpg.27cb6c52edb0f6eb6cc1f442c2ccce8a.jpg

The "Linq" between Ghetto and slightly less Ghetto is well underway

Linq2.jpg.e39484ff5287cb44001b761b70b14339.jpg

High class food and retail for two low class hotels...brilliant!

Quad.jpg.359547989cf5f887f25d474aa5d01c26.jpg

"Lipstick on a pig" is the perfect explanation for this photo. Same crappy Imperial Palace (ghetto rooms and TERRIBLE hotel layout and all), just slightly dressed up.

Wheel.jpg.0367d4b89050a64b01516bf1ea85c551.jpg

On the bright side, Vegas will finally have an observation wheel. After like 12 failed attempts.

Gansveroot.jpg.c4c0d9204e1b9cdc1a2a13eb1c8b448c.jpg

And Binions is being gutted to become the Gansveroot hotel...say that 3 times fast!

Frontier_RW.jpg.1a678864984500658852b349f770a96f.jpg

The Frontier site is still empty. And no visible start to Resorts World construction yet.

Hakkasan.jpg.d08cf4c09702c9be494a2939672bcd56.jpg

The latest douchebag magnet, err, I mean club has finally opened at MGM. If EDM is your thing, this is the place to be.

Light.jpg.2f148f40f72e101a806788c9e15c6f9b.jpg

Speaking of nightclub, one will be opening right across from Lupo in a few weeks. This one is a partnership with Cirque, where each DJ will supposedly have a mini Cirque show designed for their set. Sounds slightly less douchey than a normal night club.

DayLight.jpg.2ef12b5ca3cdf03381c0e2102faace83.jpg

Mandalay Bay is also jumping on the "Day Club" bandwagon. And by that, I mean adding a DJ to a pool and charging a ton of money for admission/cabanas/patio chairs...err, "day beds".

Looks like things are slowly coming to life in Vegas. Maybe in the next year we will see some work start up on those stalled projects.

Things are slowly coming back to life in Vegas. Summerlin Centre, another stalled project (off strip), will restart construction this summer and open in the latter half of 2014.

Also, many banks have stopped selling foreclosures as the housing market is picking back up.

Side note: didn't even realize this at the time, but the photo I posted of the Imperial Palace casino is actually the old O'Shea's. They completely rebuilt it. The main IP, err, Quad casino is still being remodeled.

That's not Binion's, that's what's left of Bill's, is it not?

(it doesn't look like you went downtown, and I see Flamingo Tower on the side, so yeah, that's definately Bill's parking garage).

I've been hearing that Fountainbleu is going bye bye. At first I thought no way, but I've heard it from a few reliable sources now. Apparently they've sold off most it's assets and are going to strip what its salvageable and then it goes kaboom.

It's funny how Caesars is updating so many of their crappy hotels. I guess they were sick of getting their asses handed to them by MGM since Caesars really only owns 3 decent properties (Caesars, Paris and Planet Hollywood) and the rest are complete s#!+ holes.

we LOVE Flamingo, and always stay there when we go to Vegas (this latest quick trip is the only time we didn't stay at Flamingo).

while not an upscale property, Flamingo is most certainly NOT a "s#ithole"

Harrah's is lower-end, Wal-mart crowd.

And Bally's is slightly above Harrah's -- heck, the building used to be the MGM Grand! It's worn down, but it's Holiday Inn level place.

Really the only property that WOULD qualify is Imperial Palace/O'shea's .. which kind of revelled in it's cheapness (kinda like Circus Circus does). . so i was surprised they decided to try to upgrade it.

and did you mean Rio instead of Planet Hollywood? I know Caesar's owns Rio, but have never seen them advertise Planet Hollywood, and it's not part of their Total Rewards package).

^ Ah, I always forget about Rio. Planet Hollywood is definitely owned by Caesars, I signed up for my Total Rewards card there.

I think it just boils down to personal perception. I wouldn't bother going into most of Caesar's properties aside from the 3 I mentioned plus Rio. The Quad, Harrahs, Flamingo and Bally's just seem run down and gross to me. I might check out Quad once Linq opens, but otherwise I have no reason to go.

CET purchased the majority of Planet Hollywood's debt and took over the property in 2010.

Carl Ichain owns Fountainbleau and has already made it clear he intends to sell it, either as scrap or to another developer who wants to finish it. He already sold all the furnishings/carpeting/etc. The Plaza hotel in Downtown purchased a bunch of it for their renovation.

  • 2 weeks later...

MGM got approval today to build fairgrounds in an empty lot across from Luxor. They plan to use it for music festivals, food festivals, carnivals and more. Interesting that they plan to have minimal parking and when big events happen guests will use the garages at Excalibur, Luxor, and Mandalay. Especially since Luxor and Excalibur lots are pretty small and they expect to draw up to 64,000 for some events.

Here's the article:

^Highly doubtful. EDC does way more than 64,000 people. The noise and traffic would make the strip miserable for everyone.

They're not really "building" anything either. They just got approval to use it for events without going through the permitting process every single time. The biggest event I could see being held there is the Mayweather/Paqiuao fight if it ever happens.

Yeah, seeing how most the strip hotels don't care for the kind of people that come for EDC, the last thing they would want is to bring right to their doorstep.

I can see them throwing a fair amount of concerts and festivals there. Anything that separates their offerings from the other strip resorts is a positive.

Years ago I used to go to COMDEX which at the time was one of the biggest conventions in Las Vegas. The casinos hated it because even though the rooms were all sold out a year in advance, no one really gambled. The computer people were a bunch of tight wades and bad tippers.

^ Ironically the convention business is a big money maker for Vegas now and has helped a lot of hotels survive the recession. The kids that come from EDC are more disliked because they all get drunk, high and out of control. They cause a lot of headaches.

^Drunk, high, and out of control in Vegas? I am going to guess that is not limited to just EDC weekend.

The difference is those drunk, high, and out of control idiots are not spending money at the clubs like they usually would be on a typical weekend in Vegas, so the casinos are losing out on the parties they usually promote. You think it is an accident the clubs are snatching up every EDM D.J. around to do residencies?

Couple photos of Monte Carlo's facade update. They've torn up a lot and began to lay foundation. The photo's aren't great, just iPhone pics from spots where the banners on the fence had gaps, but you can get the idea of what's going on.

Also a picture of MGM's marquee that is currently undergoing a major renovation. Maybe once it's done they can take off those awful wraps on the building.

The middle of the facade. You can still see the glass doors in place.
