Walt Disney World Magic Kingdom Discussion Thread

p. 148 - Magic Kingdom Destination D23 news roundup!

Recommended Posts

Just posting this for any engineers in the TPR world that might be able to provide speculation or insight into what these patents mean and could be used for.

Here's two new Disney Parks related patents recently that I haven't found posted anywhere else yet...

The first is for an Amusement Park Ride System (motion driven on a track) that can be positioned in 360 degrees. Both veritcally and horizontally..

http://www.freepatentsonline.com/20120137920.pdf

The second is a projection system that appears to be able to project images in corellation with physical objects (the smiles on the faces of the Cars in the new ride?)

The second patent sounds like the scene mapping projections they put into Snow White at Disneyland. Not to mention the Magic, Memories, and You projection shows.

I wouldn't read too much into what Disney (or any company, for that matter) patents. Most patents never get used, and many are for concepts that have never been tested and may not even work. There are patents for time machines and perpetual motion.

I'm well aware .. I've been following Apple patents for years. If all of the patents had come to fruition, I'd have a phone that could project a holographic image of me in real time while I typed on my virtual 3D projected multi touch keyboard . That being said,Disney isn't a company that seems to invest in lots of R&D just for the sake of patents and IP content. Usually they patent things they actually plan on using (if not now, in the future).

Good call on the second patent, though I that the Samsung and NuFormer (possibly lg) created all of that cool 3D mapping projection stuff and Disney was just using their tech. Maybe this patent is about Disney advancing the tech?

^It should be noted that Disney has a Research and Development wing that (I believe) operates in what is almost a stand alone division. They seek patents for technologies many of which don't end up in the parks (and other applications) for many years to come. I know they were working on some kind of tactile feedback system not too long ago that was rumored to come to the parks eventually.

http://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2012/06/chef-of-be-our-guest-restaurant-in-new-fantasyland-shares-his-favorites-from-the-menu/

Braised pork for lunch and a grilled strip steak for dinner – Chef Michael Deardorff had a hard time choosing, but says those are two of his favorites from the new menu for Be Our Guest Restaurant in New Fantasyland at Magic Kingdom Park.

Guests can start making reservations in late August (we’ll let you know the exact date as soon as we can), with the restaurant to be open for the holidays.

bgc890353LARGE.jpg.04c410a30bce5dacf4b9fc47d4d9c76d.jpg

Chef Deardorff has been at the helm in Disney kitchens for 25 years, most recently as part of the opening of the restaurants at Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa in Ko Olina, Hawai’i. Now he’s back to open Be Our Guest, inspired by “Beauty and the Beast,” with three dining rooms and seats for over 500 guests.

“Lunch is quick service, but not traditional counter service,” says Deardorff. Guest-activated terminals make ordering a snap (there also will be traditional cashiers for cash orders and special dietary requests). You order, take a seat and lunch is delivered to your table – on china, not paper.

Back to the menu. “It’s all about simple, fresh ingredients,” says Deardorff. “Just like your favorite quick-service restaurants across Magic Kingdom Park, you’ll be able to enjoy sandwiches and salads at Be Our Guest Restaurant for lunch, but all with a twist that transports you to the French setting of ‘Beauty and the Beast.’”

There’s a little French bistro flavor with tuna Niçoise salad and a Croque Monsieur sandwich with carved ham, Gruyere cheese, béchamel and pommes frites (a fancy term for French fries). Or go for the carved turkey on a warm baguette with Dijon mayonnaise, or the grilled steak sandwich with garlic butter spread, both with pommes frites.

Heartier fare includes braised pork that’s cooked for eight hours, and for vegetarians, there’s a loaded vegetable quiche or quinoa, shallot and chive salad.

bab102938LARGE.jpg.79335af57c5740b38548db2065ad8018.jpg

Dinner is table service, with diverse starters such as a charcuterie plate with cured meats and sausages, mussels steamed in white wine, French onion or potato leek soup, and a salad with champagne vinaigrette. We’re intrigued by the salad trio with three mini tastes of roasted beet, raisins and orange; green beans, tomatoes and roasted shallots; and watermelon, radish and mint.

Entrées include a thyme-scented pork rack chop with au gratin pasta, rotisserie rock hen with roasted fingerling potatoes, pan-seared salmon in leek fondue, grilled strip steak with pommes frites, sautéed shrimp and scallops with veggies in puff pastry with creamy lobster sauce, and an oven-baked ratatouille.

Oh, and dessert – we vote for the cupcakes, strawberry cream cheese or triple chocolate. If cupcakes aren’t your favorite sweet ending, there’s a chocolate cream puff and a passion fruit cream puff.

For kids 9 and under, the lunch entrées include a carved turkey sandwich, roasted pulled pork, Mickey meatloaf, seared mahi mahi, or whole-grain macaroni topped with marinara and mozzarella. For dinner, it’s grilled steak, grilled fish of the day, whole-grain macaroni or grilled chicken breast.

“We think guests will be pleasantly surprised with the menu and the value,” says Deardorff.

More updates soon!

Earlier last week I was able to stop by Magic Kingdom once again to check out the latest happenings throughout the park. New Fantasyland continues to emerge from behind construction walls as minor projects continue to spring up throughout the rest of the park. Let's take a look!

DSC03296.JPG.8a9ffe504054d337a181a4b32019a066.JPG

Framework for the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train Coaster continues to rise.

DSC03297.JPG.0b6fbd5fbeda1239f1e6cb5daa61e675.JPG

Minor additions to the frame continue to outline the ride track. Gray is facade structure and brown is track supports.

DSC03298.JPG.db19a799dfb38dd3caa7cdd5434302a9.JPG

Smaller sections of framing have begun to appear on the outskirts of the ride's layout as well.

DSC03299.JPG.06ebdcafd114594617da4424c32f0790.JPG

A section that looks like the beginning of a show building has taken form.

DSC03300.JPG.183df8b8f0006f66d51c3e3343f864ca.JPG

This section, which was the first to go vertical, has remained virtually unchanged.

DSC03302.JPG.62aac97182a9a0c2e62b11e3225863eb.JPG

Dumbo, now open on both sides, also launched its own Fastpass earlier last week.

DSC03303.JPG.efc6330130612858cffc82c7077591a1.JPG

It can be assumed that this slanted structure will support the eventually rolling hills of the coaster's landscaping.

DSC03304.JPG.43755dd911841b410c1e125f5abb1cd1.JPG

But it still has quite a ways to go until we see rolling green.

Additional rock work on the Storybook Circus side of The Little Mermaid continues to be added.

DSC03306.JPG.e9987394e5ca6cfe54b8b061a077b343.JPG

The Big Top Souvenirs tent is fully wrapped. Now all work to be done for this one is inside.

DSC03307.JPG.4555ee1e935a020f09b6a804ee3f7347.JPG

It'll take a little getting used to seeing double Dumbos.

DSC03308.JPG.2615d057f42bf6b1efbec41136a865e9.JPG

Timothy Mouse sits atop the attraction's new main marquee, and rotates just as he did at the crown of the original single spinner.

Work on the show building seems to be the primary concern here currently.

I really wasn't all that interested in the Fantasyland expansion after the official announcement, but as the attractions start to open and more construction pictures start to come in the whole project is become much more appealing. The Dueling Dumbos looks great, but I wonder why they didn't have the interactive que opened?

Well needed bump, anyways i've been looking at construction videos and i'm suprised at how fast they've been working! If all keeps going full speed ahead they might have Seven Dwarfs Mine Train Finished( or at least testing) by late 2013!

ADMIN EDIT: There was no need to post in all green or any other color besides the default offered here on the forums. Please refrain from posting like this unless you have a specific reason for doing so.

The only somewhat jarring note is the fence around Casey Jr.--I guess they don't want wet kids climbing on him and falling off.

I agree. It just looks so sad with the fence around it. I'm sure it's needed though, and that's just sad. I wish a small sign would suffice.

http://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2012/08/new-fantasyland-grand-opening-set-for-december-6-at-magic-kingdom-park-at-walt-disney-world-resort/

For more than a year now, we’ve shared updates on the New Fantasyland expansion at Magic Kingdom Park and we’re just as excited as you are to experience these magical new attractions for ourselves.

Today we’re thrilled to announce that the grand opening of New Fantasyland will take place on December 6, 2012. Attractions included in this opening are Under the Sea ~ Journey of The Little Mermaid, Be Our Guest Restaurant, Enchanted Tales with Belle, Ariel’s Grotto, Gaston’s Tavern and Bonjour! Village Gifts.

Previews of these attractions will begin November 19.

As previously planned, the New Fantasyland expansion will continue with the opening of Princess Fairytale Hall in 2013 and the debut of a new Disney “mountain” in the form of the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train in 2014.

The Storybook Circus section of the New Fantasyland expansion, which includes Barnstormer – Starring the Great Goofini, the Casey Jr. Splash & Soak Station, and Dumbo the Flying Elephant, opened to guests in July.

How soon will you visit? And which New Fantasyland attraction are you most excited to experience?

Come one, come all to Pete’s Silly Sideshow in Storybook Circus at Magic Kingdom Park!

Many of you have been asking for details on what’s happening in the big-top tents in the Storybook Circus area of New Fantasyland. I’m happy to share that one tent will house Pete’s Silly Sideshow character greetings, a place where guests can meet some of their favorite Disney circus stars who wait to show off their special talents.

Once inside the tent, guests have two options: Join a line that leads to Minnie Magnifique (Minnie Mouse as a circus star) and Madame Daisy Fortuna (Daisy Duck as a fortuneteller), or head to see The Great Goofini (Goofy as a daredevil stunt pilot) and The Astounding Donaldo (Donald Duck as a snake charmer).

In case you were wondering, Mickey Mouse will continue to greet guests in his current location at Town Square Theater on Main Street, U.S.A. And as usual, all entertainment is subject to change.

Which character are you most excited to meet? Tell us in the comments section below!

Of course!

I totally forgot about this section's Meet & Greet area!

Always took it for granted with whatever 'theme' it was

currently in, with the rest of "Mickey's ____________ ".

Artwork looks great. And interesting that Mickey is

left out of this set-up. Easier for his strolling around,

as Head RingMouse-ter, I bet.
