Hersheypark (HP) Discussion Thread

Skyrush was simply amazing, airtime galore all over the course. I'll get more into detail later, but it's definitely a top 5 coaster in the U.S.

This is where I'm at as well. I've ridden nowhere near the number of coasters Steve has, but have been on quite a few well regarded ones. I was at Cedar Point two days before riding Skyrush, and as much as I love their lineup, only Maverick comes close, and Skyrush is a no-brainer if I could only pick one. Hopefully a few rides on I305 in a couple weeks will give me more perspective, but right now, this will be tough to top.

Only complaint/caveat thus far, I honestly thought I could have come out at a couple of points. I knew I wouldn't, and it feels like such a stupid thing to say, but there is some insane ejector air to be enjoyed here. Truly a must ride, but one I'm glad my daughter did not ride yet.

I was also wondering how to get the most out of my day when I go. I am going to the park in a few weeks. I really want to ride everything, including skyrush, but I am probably not going to get to the park until about 11 and I'm not really sure how to go from there. Any advice?

In all honesty, get there at opening if not before. Otherwise try to get the Fast Lane pass if there are any left. You shouldn't have any issues with lines for Lightning Racer or Wildcat at all. Fahrenheit and Sky Rush will most likely be the worst of the lines. But that being said, all the coasters can get crazy lines almost any time. I was lucky all last summer with Storm Runner being a walk on around 3:00 for some reason while Sidewinder right next to it had a 45 minute wait.

Weirdness often abounds in regards to lines in the park on busy days. On Lightning Racer you will seldom waiting outside the station platform. Fahrenheit will almost continually have a decent wait throughout the day, and I imagine Skyrush will as well. The rest it's just about timing... I imagine the topography and layout of the park does strange things to people traffic. But I've seen full queues with Comet when SDL was a walk on, too. I've been able to reach the stairs immediately on Stormrunner, but watched the queue fill up in the time waiting to board.

Fast Track is a fine way to taste the most if you're only there once. Otherwise, it is best to be there at opening if you want to get the busiest rides. (And also to avoid parking in the hinterlands.)

That airtime... Skyrush was phenomenal! The airtime was so plentiful that it actually hurt! It is definitely in my top 5. Great first drop, loads of airtime, feels fast the whole ride, it's just a damn good coaster. It does vibrate a little and the station design is annoyingly inefficient, but it's definitely a must-ride and chalks up to its hype. The wait times actually weren't bad. I got in line for Skyrush at about 11:30 and was on in an hour and a half. It was down to thirty minutes after the rain. And other than an hour for Fahrenheit, lines were less than half an hour. I look forward to my visit tomorrow to finish what I couldn't get done today.

With Skyrush now open Hershey is honestly one of my favorite parks, but looking back and seeing how they seem to put in a coaster every 4 or so years makes me wonder... When the time does come in a few years for their next coaster, is there any space left in the Park?

Mack wanted to sell Hershey a inverted coaster with loops and rotating seats. This coaster was designed around the observation tower. Hershey went with the Intamin proposal instead (Skyrush) as they did not wanted to be first with a new type of coaster. They did say that they don't mind being second tough, so this might very well be what we will be seeing in the park next time..

So I rode both I-305 and SkyRush today for the first time today and both are insane coasters, but completely different. SkyRush has more insane air while I-305 is more of a complete overall coaster. Best day of my life! Haha.

In line for SkyRush a 2nd time now at closing, so I'm about to have another ride under my belt to getter a better feel for the coaster. Loving this 45 minute line and can't wait for a full day at HP tomorrow!

You been on the probably two best coasters in the world in one day?

SCREW YOU!!

Just got back from a 3 hour ride home from Hersheypark, and all I can say is that SkyRush is definitely one amazing attraction!

Although we had to wait a little under two hours to get on it (we ran to the line right when we got through the gates, and where we started was by the last airtime hill next to Comet), I'd say that for being opening day for the coaster and my brother's 13th birthday, it was definitely worth the wait. The line, although seemingly endless, moved at a steady pace and we were on the stairs in what felt like a few hours, but in reality was only about one and a half. Once on the stairs, the line picked up, and next thing we knew we were in row 4 and I was sitting in a wing seat...

The seats are extremely comfortable, and the lap bar is interesting and quite cool. However, the attendant on the ride pressed my restraint down even more than I had anticipated, so I was a little squished from the get-go. But, I did like the overall design on everything in the station, aside from the one-sided load/unload.

The lift is so fast you really have no idea when you're at the top until you're already going down the first drop. Airtime? Meet SkyRush. The first drop is everything you'd expect, and at the bottom I was seeing a few stars. The first hill is taken so fast you're throw right up and out, and before you can really comprehend how intense the airtime is you're thrown into another high speed turn. This one I didn't see stars on, but it was definitely fast and intense. The second airtime hill is better than the first, as this one throws you out even more than the other one did.

The high speed turn following the second airtime hill is fun, and the Stengel Dive I surprisingly saw stars on (I was in the left wing seat). Coming out of the Stengel Dive I also got a good pop of airtime, as well as some going into the final turnaround over Spring Creek. The twisty over the water was great, and it essentially throws your body up out and off to the side, offering some really unique airtime. The final, albeit tiny, airtime hill offers the most intense and high-flying airtime I have ever experienced, and it really felt like I was being thrown into the trees or Comet in the distance.

The final turn is pretty smooth and the rest is what you'd expect, but overall I was really pleased. I wasn't too sure about the winged seating arrangement, but it was fun, even though I never really focused on the wing aspect as much as I did the track and the ride itself. The wing seats also got a little more rattle and vibration than the standard seats did, but that seems to be the norm on a winged coaster.

Also, the trims on the ride really have no impact on the ride experience, as the airtime was phenomenal and the speed was never-ending. By the time I was sitting on the brake run, I was stuck in my seat with the lap bar squishing my thighs to the point that they almost lost circulation .

Overall, it's a great addition to Hersheypark, and I'm happy to say I rode it on opening day. While I wish I got the opportunity to ride the standard seat too, I'm still happy with just riding SkyRush in general. While some say there is 5 moments of airtime, I got 7, and it was all like this ...perfect! It was one of the best coasters I have been on in a long time, and I will post pictures attached to this post tomorrow!

Get to Hershey and Ride the Edge!

Like Jake, I also rode both I305 and SkyRush today. I won't write some lengthy novel comparing the two, but here are some quick thoughts.

Both are completely insane, although I prefer the overall ride experience of I305. Hand down though, SkyRush had the most intense airtime out of any coaster that I've been on.

I'd definitely rank SkyRush up there with my all time favorite coasters: I305, Nemesis, Tobu Zoo's mega-lite, and El Toro.

It was super-smooth, although the lap bar was kinda uncomfortable. I think the I305 style restraints (with the soft straps) were much better.

Was SkyRusg the hands down omfg best coaster ever?!?! Probably not. But it sits in with some REALLY good company.

I'm REALLY liking these good reviews of Skyrush comparing it to Intimidator 305. If those who have Intimidator 305 as number 1 and rank Skyrush as number 2 (or top 5), then that just gives me even more motivation to get up to Hershey as soon as possible! From the sounds of it, Hersheypark definitely has a winner on their hands. Congrats to them and Intamin!

And I'm beyond jealous of those who rode both Intimidator 305 and Skyrush in the same day.

Hey guys, I NEED to know about what the lines/d will be on Wednesday/Thursday of next week, and about how long skyrush's will be. Thanks!

Hi - let's just stop and think about this for a moment - SkyRush hasn't even been open yet on a Wednesday/Thursday.... EVER.... so how is anyone supposed to be able to predict how long the line will be?

Assume the line will be LONG, and anything shorter is a bonus.

There's your answer.

I wouldn't say that Wildcat has gotten any better, but it never pulverized my insides to mush to begin with. It's pretty rough, but it's nowhere near the worst ride in the world.

Since apparently there's never a queue for it, it's certainly worth a ride as you pass by it as you go to Lightning Racer. The back seat was pretty fun.

As of last summer, my best rides were the first and second row. Anything further back was mush inducing. By best rides I mean I came off with a headache at a dull roar that kept me from riding anything beyond the monorail for several hours.

It certainly wasn't the worst ride, and I do actually enjoy it's layout...a LOT...but it was REALLY rough when we rode it last year. It used to be in my top 5 wood coasters in the late 90s. I wish they could do something to it to make it AWESOME again.

It is certainly a great layout. I wonder if Great Coasters will come in sometime in the near future and give Wildcat some nice re-tracking? It would be a great way to get Wildcat back to what it once was and would probably be a good "between big new attractions" development.

LOL I know this, I just wanted to know the average crowds at HP on a wednesday, so we could make a educated guess because our schedule is very unstable so it might cancel if we can't ride anything..

EDIT: Nevermind, this has been pushed at least 2 weeks down the line

I ride my first lap about 15 minutes ago, and I am giddy waiting for a quick second go. Absolutely amazing, it is definitively in my top three rides.

Bingo!

FWIW, It is a busy Sunday and the line that over-flowed the queue now only fills two full switchbacks. My wife refused to re-ride, she feels too exposed. She figures most try it once and find out they have passed their limit.

Wildcat was much rougher this weekend than I remembered it being last time I was at Hershey. However my last trip to Hershey was 8 years ago, and I remembered Wildcat being no rougher than Lightning Racer.
