Photo TR: Rainbow Magicland: The Sequel

Recommended Posts

I visited Rainbow Magicland again last weekend with my friend Marco, hoping that a month would be enough time for Shock - The Steam Machine and other rides to open. But was it enough time?

025.jpg.fadf1c13092753da965c38e939412000.jpg

We get there on Friday night, hoping to avoid the crowds and heat, as well as get some night rides in.

027.jpg.12a8a7928eeecec21d5418bb573fb477.jpg

While waiting on news from the info booth, I noticed the new arches over the entrance turnstiles, as well as the new Hyundai (I SPELLED IT CORRECTLY!! OMG!) parked out front.

031.thumb.jpg.c9e341d4b2139130a2b1fb748b824511.jpg

What I found out: Shock had been open since June 8th, but was operating relatively unreliably. It had just broken down a couple hours before and we were told it *MIGHT* operate the next day. So we headed for our hotel in Rome and were hopeful that it'd be open tomorrow.

034.thumb.jpg.fba913f69edf20a480eae37f9ab99c20.jpg

FAIL for now, but will things be better tomorrow?

061.jpg.e2c519fff796ce3f2897e668baaeb677.jpg

Next day.....

Have things changed at Rainbow Landmagic?

SFMM could seriously use these! They help keep parked cars a lot cooler, they help define parking spaces, and they are a great way to help the park save on energy (Environmental Enthuseast much? :p).

066.jpg.dd6532b20af38417a4b6edf753b486e0.jpg

Now that the park is in high gear (or is it?) for the summer, the parking system is now working. Parking cost is 5 Euros, but instead of paying when you arrive, you come in and pay before you leave the parking lot. You can pay before you enter the park if you'd like, or you can pay after you're done.

We're back, this time with many more people.

Sadly, Shock was not open today, but we still decided to make a day of it.

075.jpg.a4279457d561bf2c546aeed19012ba16.jpg

They managed to get the shades on; already an improvement since last night!

076.jpg.dfcb6841422b18a3338b32fea8773bcd.jpg

Looks like they finished some landscaping since my last visit.

I walked up with my camera and he just made a pose with the cotton candy! These Italians are awesome!

So, let's find out what's going on.

085.jpg.a3765dece735eb3bfb42d9b99b12b5ae.jpg

The firefighters told us that both Shock and Isola Volante (Flying Island) were closed today.

086.jpg.32dcfd2ff2152f8479338a41cbaadcd3.jpg

Such a hard credit for me to get!

089.jpg.31d2d1eb0b14c242bb17a60cbae9a8f3.jpg

It's still nowhere near as good as CP's afro fountain!

It's time for L'Olandese Volante!

Olandese Volante = Flying Dutchman

103.jpg.8de15704a1ee842c57d8c453ddb6ca74.jpg

Both trains were running, so lines weren't bad. We probably waited 20 minutes at most.

Obligatory lift hill shot.

105.jpg.4197f17fdf4ca03612e55397c3566fce.jpg

Vekoma's newer lap bars are very simple and somewhat comfortable. A far cry from SLC OTSRs of death!

106.jpg.25350a8d6e67e526d7805f4352b4c4d7.jpg

They've set up the onride camera, but it didn't work for our ride.

107.jpg.cba2c5bb8eeb89b8783b82e64be9840f.jpg

The angle of the camera makes it hard to see unless you're looking straight to the left.

108.jpg.15bddec8cb2d4013cd4caba52107a531.jpg

Rainbow Cat has been replaced with boring Olandese Volante bowls and mugss.

109.jpg.cf8227eed3de8638c10d2c92c2f5decb.jpg

Olandese Volante logo. Pretty cool, if you ask me.

OV's landscaping is ok, but you can tell it's new.

Mystika seems to be progressing along smoothly.

This ice cream shop has also opened.

114.jpg.1b823d04e4ee19c17261e56e98bda1ff.jpg

The fencing has been taken down and lots of landscaping has been completed.

116.thumb.jpg.bdab3f94dcd42745ecbdee4addbfa8af.jpg

The entrance is kinda cool.

The queue is short but windy...

118.jpg.7139ec3ffcc4cf31cb80eff8978dc27a.jpg

I'm assuming a few railings will be put up to increase its capacity, though.

124.jpg.f8b9c50dd2326157c49b0f5b9cd440c5.jpg

That switchback way down there should have a fan; it was very hot and we actually stood back to keep from having to experience it.

In fact, somebody passed out from heat exhaustion.

Much rather hold up the line (and the people behind us agreed) than go into the hot, sweaty tunnel.

I've come to expect that modern accelerator coasters break down on a regular basis, I guess the technology working inside is just to haywire....

I wonder why 30+ year old Shuttle-Loops are still working so fine to date...maybe the enigneers should do which is prooven and reliable technology...

^^^Agreed, and you have no idea how much anticipation I've had to ride it! Overall, though, Rainbow Magicland is a pretty good park. All it needs is a couple of decent flats and I think it'd be a well balanced park. Thank you!

^^The coaster lineup is pretty small, but I think they did a good job at getting the coasters to 'progressively' become more thrilling. I'm sure this is one of few theme parks in Italy that actually has a few English signs; big parks like Gardaland will probably have some English signs, but if it isn't very big or is not near a tourist destination, I'd doubt that it would has English signs.

^I've noticed that too! Schwarzkoph Shuttle Loopers are not only very reliable, but are also very compact and pretty thrilling, too. I think LIM/LSM launch coasters are the worst for reliability, so this shouldn't be too much of a surprise to me.

Woah! For a park that opened this year, they really have a lot to offer! Granted, not all of the rides are open, but if they were, I'd already say this park is a big competitor for Gardaland and Mirabilandia on scenery and coaster collection. Shock really does look great, but what do you expect from a coaster that is like Rip Ride Rockit, when that ride had problems too

Thanks for posting!

Nice images and information. I hope you get the credit sooner than later. Looked like a bright day... and that emphasized some of the landscaping detail for this park. Nice looking place... lot of open/shadeless areas, though. I don't blame you for holding up your spot in line to avoid the oven-tunnel section of queue (for "Cagliostro"?). Would probably do that for "Volcano" (tBC - KD) for that section heading in the mountain as well... can get really stuffy (but the line continues for a while and stagnates in that descending switchback, preventing a hold-up... oh, and it is an "active" volcano... so logistical detail meets convenient theme support and suspended reality wins. Didn't they add fans somewhere in there?). Thanks for posting.

^^^The park indeed does have a lot to offer. While being more child-oriented, it has top-notch theming and a few good thrillers, and in the big picture I agree that it's good competition for Mirabalandia and Gardaland because it'll draw people from all around southern and central Italy. I'm sure the kinks with Shock will be ironed out over the year... I just need it to be open for 1 day that I'm there just so I can ride and get a POV.

^^I hope I do, too. It was a bright day, but my camera's flash was also going off unusually often, so that might've contributed to the problem. They've improved the situation with shade slightly as you may have noticed with the park entrance and Bombo Run's queue, but I certainly agree that it needs some more. All the park needs to do is install a fan on the roof of that switchback (very low roof, though) and that'll get it a lot more comfortable. Heat with V:tBC makes sense, but not for MC Escher: The Ride (or Cagliostro as you said correctly ).

^It is a nice park! I hope you can visit someday when Shock and Mystika are open.

231.thumb.jpg.28bdf938453a1fcf290cf10a42c4600d.jpg

Time for Pop Tower!

232.thumb.jpg.75ae01369bef8000ee34b0754b22e2fa.jpg

Marco and I try to have a good time, despite the fact that we were probably the oldest kids on the ride.

233.thumb.jpg.a2ae484f9d98b984b3ffa0bbec2614b2.jpg

WHHHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

236.thumb.jpg.45a629e12fb439e45a550915851959be.jpg

Marco insisted on pulling, so I just focused on being sad and pathetic looking.

238.jpg.d3672cb177396fd59eab21e1aeba695e.jpg

Freaking out on Amerigo, too.

239.jpg.afaf632417a5d510371dd6e279886710.jpg

LOL! That girl behind us probably thinks we're insane.

240.jpg.619a79d78fe1e00f6f0caca972528844.jpg

Hey, Ronnie!

241.jpg.5f81e7de310b2f5c4259fc94d156468b.jpg

How's it goin'?

242.jpg.b54a9c6ba3e51f77403298ebbab92584.jpg

Ronnie does a pretty long cycle, and everybody seemed to be having fun.

243.jpg.d926dd5d96e27f610cccb2983f66f5f2.jpg

That's the highest he goes.

244.thumb.jpg.0865e78f64899b9d07b31b7a9ca533dd.jpg

Marco decided to leave Ronnie's line, and we noticed this while heading toward Cagliostro!

245.thumb.jpg.01de8661af62c6c147a2b8d5a4378fa6.jpg

It's testing! Will it be dropped?

246.thumb.jpg.2036c57592b52293c9b73ae3fcbbeb09.jpg

Nope. It was just brought up and lowered down.

247.jpg.f4a7591bc448a662aeb051cb24a4b0ea.jpg

This interruption of the the test shots of Mystika is brought to you by Ignarra Motors.

248.thumb.jpg.d2ac99c63744d8e53349fb4686959bc7.jpg

We now return to previously scheduled nerd shots.

249.jpg.f839349b8f26cf0d63ea83f4e81f2f57.jpg

I try to look over the bushes

250.jpg.c094872abeef8563985cfec4c7d48cd1.jpg

To get a shot of the vehicle.

251.jpg.abea5c0473d9a1605e68c8a0f3806794.jpg

There we go!... sorta...

253.jpg.0e0ca4b7cb2da0bb6335a54373ece315.jpg

Cagliostro makes its brief outside appearance before heading back inside.

254.jpg.8ddf628a86560d461ec7f491da6b1216.jpg

I'm guessing that's apart of the queue, but who knows....?

255.jpg.d0202a6803e12eae7491a4bbcc0eb39f.jpg

Could this have an onride photo, too?

256.thumb.jpg.82400756e5a9f9a7e2d690ac409ef71a.jpg

This ride just keeps getting curiouser and curiouser.

257.jpg.cd3f297a1d2e875c02bd24b82b37cbf7.jpg

Take the tunnel! (Translation: Marco and I were able to withstand the tunnel's heat once again to get another ride on Cagliostro.)

259.jpg.c56f16638592b39a62e63e16591d81aa.jpg

I decide to take a look at Mystika's queue.

260.thumb.jpg.709f8892a03b188733ae2b6a522ec5c6.jpg

The entrance once again.

261.thumb.jpg.b38e38ac5f80b1e3ca2086622fd18a83.jpg

Can you tell that I like to take vertical shots of drop towers?

262.jpg.a14c1a88bc818d2ab47254f2e92d5a83.jpg

Mom, dad, and I get ice cream form that little shop. Marco decides against it and gets a water instead.

263.jpg.464f10eb1ee12935b21c5abc71e52ea3.jpg

Has this become the world's most beautiful LIM-launched lawn ornament?

264.jpg.a5df194d9411bb01a697003d0f4b2cc3.jpg

L'OV's camera is working!

265.jpg.85d92195b5fe8d3a83a030c7b529d2c9.jpg

They need to work on the flash... as you can see, my face was overdeveloped.

266.jpg.fc3f6d59896b280b5468e9e8f3032abe.jpg

The children seem to like the airbrush painting.

268.jpg.46329d4a6dd0469f9946fce1b454da2b.jpg

Marco and I decide to ride Yucatan again.

269.jpg.cc48dacdadff4335cfcbf0db33611b6e.jpg

Dad takes pictures from the observation bridge.

270.thumb.jpg.9eac3f04b2ed7a30d0f7f36190f751dd.jpg

This head was very interesting...

271.thumb.jpg.aee399a0c7671c901b226658dfac204c.jpg

Mr. Dragon dude was NOT happy!

272.jpg.048e25b0e386177f03e429cd888889fe.jpg

Here we go!

273.jpg.49d3d0226e75d6f32ddcfe3ab3818378.jpg

SSSKLOOOOOOOOSSSHHHHHHH!

274.jpg.0bc1c35ace06fabb56fbdbecf35c2591.jpg

Drop 1 got us wet! Time for drop 2!

275.jpg.84073dfa87a427962e042165807702dc.jpg

They have some weird animatronics in there.

276.jpg.e0127289e359472ed8d939d10ef334de.jpg

Drop 2 got us completely soaked!

277.jpg.c5b29773d8a54d4a4b109cd8cbc438b6.jpg

Dan would die in the seat that I am in.

278.jpg.e903580f5a154892b514685d7c91ded3.jpg

Goodnight, everybody!

279.thumb.jpg.24034648a5fac72a53bcdc787d81f7a3.jpg

More testing.

281.thumb.jpg.8cee27d127e6984ca80e88235b333154.jpg

Hey little mechanic dude! How is it to be standing ontop of the catchcar?

282.thumb.jpg.27bb20c6acd19c62b294dad7a73899d0.jpg

This time it went all the way to the top!

283.jpg.39844001e54ce36ec6c72482bcb8c5a6.jpg

Two guys having a leisurely conversation 70 meters in the air.... that's almost like standing ontop of Goliath's lift hill at SFMM!

Some more

285.jpg.4d469c99272f090e51fbcfbbaf494782.jpg

weird faces!

286.jpg.9001fbe04c83550b15acfcf735f49219.jpg

Marco takes some artsy shots from the grass...

That non-inverting loop is so nommy!

291.jpg.1c8e160c7536c67fec1ce7d969d256c8.jpg

This area has already sunk down a little bit!

292.jpg.69055a7a4b175d4834b38b96caf3e984.jpg

That lady down there gave us a few more specifics about Shock's downtime. Apparently, a part broke yesterday (when we first arrived) and a new one had to be sent from Germany. She said that it would most likely be down for 4-5 days. Why the heck weren't we told this yesterday at the front gate?!?

293.jpg.a1f04d2995898d5969c5dc6b18255486.jpg

Blarg.

295.thumb.jpg.64ab7ad73f641ea6f544facc54c6e595.jpg

Flying Island (now with its more suitable Italian translation) has been broken as well. No panorama shots today.

296.jpg.6a3dac54b0e2534bfd4758bf26fda307.jpg

It'd better be open next time I come!

294.jpg.fa0b1fb3b14c420f825e4e78efe8c77f.jpg

We might as well check out Shock's arcade.

297.jpg.25d4fbaf4dcf3303efc954daf3f25a70.jpg

See 'ya later, gargoyles! Hope to see you again when Shock finally works right!

Arrivederci, Magicland!

Anybody want a few park maps?

307.jpg.ee54b5589e49068e210a5a6c1fc1b69d.jpg

We leave the parking lot,

308.jpg.a99a6f5081045a5d56721507b3b14a54.jpg

stop at a gas station,

309.jpg.34bb8c8832085196883003dddd65adcf.jpg

grab some snacks,

310.jpg.e9b1a59495b38a341698651b25688d5d.jpg

and hit the road heading north for Spello.

Thanks for reading! =)

Seems like I was lucky when I managed to get on Shock; it's a superb coaster, well worth the wait. Hopefully the park will sort out the reliability issues soon.

FWIW, my impression of Rainbow MagicLand is that it'll be a nice park when they've finished it. It's a shame they felt the need to open before they were fully ready.

^^Thank you! Rainbow Magicland is one of those parks that you really wouldn't know about if you didn't see the construction update because it is so new and TPR hasn't been there yet. I do, too.

^That's great to hear that it's a good ride! I hope I get on it before June is over. I completely agree: the park should've waited a little while before opening, but once everything is completely open it'll be a lot better.

I wanted to post the two videos I took while at Rainbow Magicland. I took a partial POV of Drakkar (that is, until my camera got wet and I had to turn it off to inspect it; thankfully it's fine) and a second POV of Cagliostro, this time with the strobe lights on.

Subscribe to me on YouTube if you'd like to see more POVs and videos!
