Photo TR: The Johnson's Coaster Vacation (2006)

Recommended Posts

Leanne, Darlene, and I just returned from a whirlwind of a trip visiting several parks along the east coast of the United States. We have been planning this trip for the past 9 months or so, and we had a really good time. We finally got to ride a bunch of great coasters we have never experienced before. Well, you know I just let the pictures tell the story so here we go...

I wonder what we can do in Virginia...

Whew, we finally made it.

Even though we were in North Carolina, we still could not escape these places.

Ok, after several more hours of driving we made it to our second park of the trip, Busch Gardens Europe. We arrived there a little after 5 which meant we had 5 solid hours to explore the park before it closed at 10. I only have a few pictures in this section, but there will be plenty more after this, because we spent quite a bit of time at the park the next day.

DSC07557.JPG.6eb4a1ea2b5a77e5c247b717766db74f.JPG

We earned all four credits right before dinner.

I am not sure how this guy's hat stayed on during the ride.

Onto Apollo's Chariot.

I really loved our nightime Big Bad Wolf ride.

Mmmmmm, Big Bad Wolf.

DSC07548.JPG.746fe8f5c7953ce989bfbd3c7362710b.JPG

We thought BGE was a very nice park, theming galore.

I stopped at South of the Border once a few years ago and the place screamed "Tourist Trap." a 5 minute stop was enough and even if the park and coaster ever opens again (doubt it as it has been SBNO for years), I wouldn't even be comfortable about riding it (safety).

I want to go to BGW again. BGW is the first coaster park I went to after loosing my fear of inversions in Las Vegas. I'm glad I went when I did though because I got to ride Drachen Fire. Apollo's Chariot is the only one I haven't ridden. Infact I've never ridden a B&M hyper at all.

Ok, onto Day 3:

We really got to explore Busch Gardens Europe on this day. I think its a very nice park. They have really spent a lot of time and money on its theming and atmosphere. While BGE may only have 4 roller coasters at the moment, we thought that all 4 of them were pretty solid rides. The highlight for us was our night ride of The Big Bad Wolf. If you get the chance make sure you stick around and try that out yourselves. Anyways, onto a bunch of pictures.

Why do McDonalds near Busch Parks have such a hard time with customer service?

If you are into getting thrown all around, Corkscrew Hill is a must.

If you are into shows, the new Emerald Beat is a must.

And another one, just to make sure.

Ok, its required to include this picture in every BGE Photo TR.

I have always thought night time rides on BBW are a definite must if you visit BGE.

Emerald Beat is my hands down favorite show, but I do miss Irish Thunder. It was one of the few shows I actually enjoyed seeing more than once.

OK, onto Day 4.

Paramount's King's Dominion.

This was our second Paramount Park we have been to. Last year we visited Carowinds in which we found to be a very nice park with decent operations. We have heard all kinds of horror stories about how poor operations have been so far this year at PKD. Either the new ownership has been making changes or we hit it on a strange day, the park's operations were quite good the day we were there. It probably also helped that the park, overall, was not very crowded. We were able to earn all the credits (no Taxi or Flight of Fear for obvious reasons). While PKD was not our favorite park on the trip, it still exceeded our expectations.

DSC07665.JPG.db1a9c364b130784d6d435b12a0f0001.JPG

This is what the coaster train looks like.

DSC07664.JPG.c281c162ea695e2624f3bce5ef3be158.JPG

I thought it was neat how they incorporated the track into the mountain.

DSC07662.JPG.f5c3bdcbeca5af4330a5c28029dfde17.JPG

While the line was long, they at least had both trains going.

DSC07661.JPG.99bea1ccdf79eeed1763d9f6a8565c9d.JPG

It did have about a 40 minute wait for our first ride. It was really the only real wait we had.

DSC07668.JPG.29cd3f8c4eb7aafd0acea759134e6123.JPG

I liked it more than either Leanne or Dar.

DSC07711.JPG.03642922e9fc03a348463a128dea2a38.JPG

Volcano: The Blast Coaster was our next credit.

DSC07707.JPG.4a91f9fc503cb965b89d4fae661d6787.JPG

The ride has quite a bit to it. More than I expected.

DSC07706.JPG.acea4346aae32b9942a226dfdfc4d661.JPG

Zoooooooooom!

DSC07660.JPG.580a78628c421bc85d476fc798462d38.JPG

We are all excited to ride this one.

DSC07704.JPG.312942adb65c29e9247aa837ffeb8660.JPG

The coaster trains are very well detailed, plus they have onboard speakers as well.

DSC07658.JPG.0ce6dbdb1e648e61e3da49db345182d1.JPG

Plus the coaster crew was well trained.

DSC07705.JPG.f96db53fe6c80d47f4929c5b9ccff373.JPG

For a recent opening, the line was not very long.

DSC07703.JPG.5b9934eec36a0c87a81ba215d532f234.JPG

It proved to be a very fun family coaster. Its a great addition to the park.

DSC07701.JPG.250b7c7cc66c92061b345386b2c34c1e.JPG

Yeah, they have a brand new ride. The Italian Job.

DSC07657.JPG.62442806c1da89a97c7ebbd2f5df957c.JPG

While it did not seem as bad as the one at Carowinds, I am still not a fan of these.

DSC07656.JPG.3c7578afc19950cd540f6a187288c3fc.JPG

Our 2nd, and final Hurler credit to earn.

DSC07655.JPG.994113d898afa12cd65d81481dc08fd9.JPG

Oh yeah, the mouse with the drop at the start of the ride.

DSC07652.JPG.71b9679c75bf27a55d1281c414ea9f43.JPG

So we decided to have her start with this one, lol!

DSC07651.JPG.628d0a51ae3d0d14eab5bb794dee4b8b.JPG

By the way, this is going to be Dar's very first launched coaster.

DSC07697.JPG.a5825b47a99046e681edfadfdebca542.JPG

I do not think any of the rides at Carowinds goes above a "4".

DSC07714.JPG.9f146bd3c70808904c79c3d3a337ebc1.JPG

See, it has a level "5", the highest level for a thrill ride.

DSC07713.JPG.76970010662639f52336b31da3377580.JPG

Most intense launched coaster in the United States.

DSC07684.JPG.1e57b19738a5c88427860786239eea8e.JPG

Oh yes.

DSC07650.JPG.b9f594393330769ccf422a5018fb21a0.JPG

Right before park opening, you know where we were headed.

DSC07649.JPG.014581ae3c5f82c951a67c601f5a087a.JPG

This park has one of those "Frenchy" towers.

DSC07648.JPG.001a2aa28fa459e985b9c2ea984099a5.JPG

We though we were in trouble when we saw all these kids, but the crowds were light that day.

DSC07647.JPG.a5fd6a471e5489f2549fc39f48f91548.JPG

Ok, we made it to Paramount's King's Dominion.

Wow, I had no idea BGW (re)added Pirates 4D. Seems kinda weird to me.......

IMO, the not to miss show at BGW is that cheesy leprachaun castle show. Totally forget the name, but it was fantastically cheesetastic, which is right up my alley.

Oooh, Its always weird seeing Mice rides with a first drop. The first and only one I've ridden like that was up at PCW.

Nice pics Erik! I know I'm getting ahead of myself, but you visited HP, right? Did you ride their Extreme Peannut Butter Cup ride? I've been wanting to see a review on that ride.

More PKD.

DSC07730.JPG.ee0ebd0eff0120e1854648ea2ea4a1c0.JPG

Thanks for the great time PKD.

DSC07727.JPG.05ed0bb6183474b0016eba0f8ef9fc7d.JPG

Lucky for me that I was short enough.

DSC07726.JPG.8dfbeb49fba4fa267971a5369ab08c94.JPG

Yeah, Leanne and Dar were tall enough to ride all the rides.

DSC07700.JPG.f91414d4d4cb53ac0130ca7c7be6111f.JPG

We all mastered the Scooby-Doo ride.

DSC07699.JPG.672dd278b3e4595077ed9ef07511d0cd.JPG

There he is.

DSC07698.JPG.59fee0e61931e415db5a39a73d1f4a03.JPG

Oh yeah, they have one of those Scooby shooting dark rides.

DSC07718.JPG.b50830a2b493fa0c57ef7bd34f16b7f5.JPG

Yeah, the park really was not very crowded that day.

DSC07715.JPG.1d754f3c210d923a6c2929ab89a2f7eb.JPG

We went back to Hypersonic for a couple more rides, since the line was very short.

DSC07721.JPG.f08b0f49b16445471e91357cd300f530.JPG

You now have proof that God loves Intamin.

DSC07710.JPG.5b66d3b95691ce346851b1c19ad1469e.JPG

How high did this thing go? It certainly was up there.

DSC07709.JPG.b03e52a650a6a616f2c3ddae49b4d0e4.JPG

Oh yeah, I forgot they had this ride at PKD.

DSC07689.JPG.ecadced6cad24e046d567752b7620cea.JPG

As well as an observation tower.

DSC07708.JPG.5a928a4185e0356163fc0f3de6181600.JPG

They have swings at PKD.

DSC07683.JPG.d1fb7a0b15410e259b31c9828771bb7f.JPG

While all the rides were pretty much open. It was difficult to find a place to eat.

DSC07680.JPG.6734df1638feeb1e448b1a987269d4ba.JPG

I was able to very slightly snap them. Nothing like the flyers at Carowinds though.

DSC07679.JPG.d3e34afdc44d26db137e0e15cc3b2d0c.JPG

Though these flyers were pretty difficult to snap.

DSC07681.JPG.c8839de80cd59e9367e2d9ff07d867b6.JPG

Yeah they got Flyers here.

DSC07724.JPG.fd0ce05832dab99d6d4080d131cbb7df.JPG

I guess they removed a bunch of trees for this one.

DSC07682.JPG.02d253fcd0e0b7ef2e4a48f9bb4be8d4.JPG

AS well as the new Go-Kart track right next door.

DSC07678.JPG.6d368e7e7111c44abe7698ef3b27c912.JPG

Its Grizzly.

DSC07677.JPG.4ecc5b596425452a63fd2b96e5caee88.JPG

I now know what it means when people say, "Togo Death Machine."

DSC07675.JPG.bfbe8a8faba29ab80837d855fdc1eb74.JPG

This one was our first Togo coaster. It is also a Togo standup coaster as well.

DSC07676.JPG.80ec0d90aa0cf9c513ff7e5c17ab2f9c.JPG

Oh dear, it is Shockwave.

DSC07673.JPG.49584b144a1d4418fea92a31850aa35f.JPG

It was kinda cool that we went under water on this one.

DSC07693.JPG.e334840b2912d7b89810d272eca83725.JPG

We liked it more than some of the bigger ones in the park.

DSC07695.JPG.43d3d6b24432215bfaada1a8c6c96f87.JPG

It was a fun Junior wooden coaster.

DSC07694.JPG.464b9970aad14a135cfb52bf1c0a04a4.JPG

But there is always Scooby Doo's coaster.

DSC07671.JPG.ec2aea63b50e7bae349f1a8f2e0c700c.JPG

Yeah, we did get denied for this one. At least she was polite.

Oh look, it is another credit.

Great pics Erik, Glad you had fun in VA.

I See you disobeyed EVERYBODY on this board and went to the most perfect park that is BGW first, therefore your trip to PKD was total crap and a waste of time.

It always blew my mind how the operations on Alpengeist get Worse every year, and Apollo is one of the easiest coasters to load and dispatch and they Stack 3 trains constantly!

IMO PKD's ops are not bad, it is the fact that they run 1 train on all of the wood now except weekends (they used to always run max. trains on everything)

Good to see that PKD was empty on Monday, they usually are during the first weeks in June, Kids still have a week of school left here.

If you gave me a pm before the trip you could have borrowed my kid for Taxi Jam to get that awesome credit

Oh Erik, Tell me you rode Scooby in the back seat!!!!!! (insane air on the second drop)

Looking forward to the rest of your pics.

JEFF

I have always thought night time rides on BBW are a definite must if you visit BGE.

Emerald Beat is my hands down favorite show, but I do miss Irish Thunder. It was one of the few shows I actually enjoyed seeing more than once.

Agreed! When you go throught the village on the ride at night, there are lights in the houses and its amazing. Anyway cool Photo TR Erik.

Yeah I will give a more in depth report of all the credits earned after I post all my photos. Yeah we did ride Scooby twice, once near the front, the other in the very back. There is mostly music that comes out of the speakers of the Italian Job. I think there was a little bit of talking at the start and end of the ride, but mostly music.

OK Day 5:

Six Flags America.

While there are a few decent coasters in the park, The Wild One was really awesome, SFA was hands down our least favorite park on the trip. Ride operations were lackluster (except for the Wild One), many of the employees were very rude or unresponsive, and all the water rides were closed. Lucky for us the park was not very crowded and we were able to get all the credits, minus Joker's Jinx, in about 4 1/2 hours. We also did not have to spend money on Flash Passes as well.

DSC07760.JPG.56f7fe7ba3f1079c4eb68c80e626ecda.JPG

What an unusal McDonalds.

DSC07758.JPG.cc3aa55732844e149370a112fd4b3a36.JPG

OK there is our car.

DSC07757.JPG.6d32bef70d3f8a4e333fcd4c028abcac.JPG

Ok we got all we can, lets get out while we can.

DSC07756.JPG.da997ea573455a41d7eceb7941215664.JPG

But they made up, and we got a nice picture with him.

DSC07755.JPG.8623ccb4c3efd1e8b5ccfb8d87519b5c.JPG

Bugs scared Dar quite a bit.

DSC07752.JPG.f3d2e0294da32f737e56a91a509be8ed.JPG

They only had one train running, because the red one was still causing all sorts of problems.

DSC07751.JPG.c585e2d386170b767b3c00d796a98e53.JPG

Ok, I am smiling because we did finally got our Superman credit. It still was a good ride.

DSC07746.JPG.486ea5d5bc465be7f4a00fa4c6e0358c.JPG

We got the kiddie credit!

DSC07745.JPG.c5932c574f86b66669a3dab7be007646.JPG

Worst coaster on the trip. This was really bad, even for a Vekoma SLC.

DSC07744.JPG.8fc2847da4fa85a2342faf755e6b084f.JPG

Dang it, I really wanted to ride this one.

DSC07743.JPG.913edf70329f754bf547252165283c6a.JPG

They had a bunch of problems with the red train today, we ended up leaving the station without the credit.

DSC07742.JPG.96fac63efc461643f1a5ed842bafb01d.JPG

We decided to go try Superman again only to be greeted by a stuck train.

DSC07741.JPG.606ae59eff9281041aae57a2878d6fc9.JPG

We then hit Two Face, which was our first invertigo boomerang coaster.

DSC07739.JPG.8a0e4076204e674aec98fa5edce5b922.JPG

See how it brought smiles to our faces.

DSC07747.JPG.92091b5728c01576de6585a6429237db.JPG

Mmmmmmm...Wild One. My 2nd favorite wooden coaster. Awesome operations as well.

DSC07738.JPG.614545c06289eabc273fc039de13d5c9.JPG

Yeah it is true, Ultra Twister is located right here.

DSC07753.JPG.f52177f7971d912f84f85391ea092243.JPG

The coaster was fun, lucky for us we were on the 2nd train of the day, they had a dispatch about every 10 minutes or so.

DSC07737.JPG.228e54e1f75f176207c0a112941de72e.JPG

So we continued around to the back where Batwing awaits.

DSC07736.JPG.016dca0ecd5c23682d730aab53c34350.JPG

Too bad we encountered a closed ride with a clueless park employee sitting in front.

DSC07735.JPG.c975ccd4d216c0b74a04516f14a40f34.JPG

We headed right for Gotham where the Intamin awaits us.

DSC07734.JPG.c40d37d3f4ccb0183790efc944b3e075.JPG

As you can see, there was not many people in the park at opening.

DSC07754.JPG.5b2d17dcbe5fd6eac46ffe462ff8c69c.JPG

The front entrance area seemed kind of nice.

DSC07733.JPG.4f421313a280c48790a4df52516a8b4c.JPG

Just in case you forgot which park we were at.

DSC07732.JPG.668251490344cbd3e664865ef49c78c6.JPG

No Joker's Jinx for us on this visit, but we got all the rest.

DSC07731.JPG.3022f021c8a260e7c4a06da22a416401.JPG

We got to park right next to the entrance.

DSC07759.JPG.5abb79567bf8d2ceaf28dee916c55790.JPG

Our next park, Six Flags America.
