Back again for another adventure. This time we arive in Dubai, U.A.E. Located in the Middle East adjacent to Saudi Arabia. I had so many pictures from my trips that I had to divide this into two sections. The following was taken in Sept 2005.

hammerhead1.jpg.b8b29f0748fb1db3f76566097108c4dd.jpg

Could it be Hammerhead from Knottts? Sure looks like it to me. This was taken as we drove past "Wonderland" theme park. The ride wasn't open yet, so I didn't visit. I was there in 2003 and did just about everything there was to do.

Oh nothing here. Just the construction of the worlds tallest building. The actual figure wont be released untill contsruction is complete. But it looks like it could be upwards of 3,000 feet in height.

Part of the sports area of 'Dubailand'. I think somewhere in this area is where the other ski resort will be built.

Legends will be one of many theme parks in the 'Dubailand' development.

There would normaly be a waterfall and a "thunder storm" that floods one of the lazy rivers. But this feature was under repairs.

More of the island. Andd oh yeah, a master blaster slide. So much fun!

And on the other side of the park is the Mina A' Salam at Madinat Jumeirah. It is the largest hotel in the emirate of Dubai. In the distance you can see contstruction of the 'Palm Jumeriah'. One of three palm tree shaped islands being constructed.

Wild Wadi is one of the most advanced water parks in the world. Featuring 8 Master blaster slides that interconnect with 7 other slides. You only have to get out of the water for a few slides.

Because people in the middle of the desert want to ski too! This is the worlds largest indoor ski resort. But wait, there is more! Dubailand is building a ski resort of their own that will be even larger!

On the way to Wild Wadi we pass by the most massive construction project I have ever seen.

Man, Dubai never fails to impress me. Those pictures are awesome.

How far along is Legends now anyway? It's been awhile since I've seen any new info on the whole Dubailand project.

I can't wait to go snowboarding in the middle of a desert. Looks like we have another awesome off-season place to go!

Looks like about 800 metres for that tower, about 2600 feet...

http://www.newscientist.com/article.ns?id=dn6781

The Burj Dubai tower will stand 800 metres tall - just 5 metres shy of half a mile - once completed in 2008. That will be nearly 300 metres taller than the tallest floored building in the world today, the Taipei Tower in Taiwan.

The new tower's unique, three-sided design will ascend in a series of stages, around a supportive central core and boast a total of 160 floors, accessible via a series of double-decker elevators. Its shape will be integral to its impressive size. The design is intended to reduce the impact of wind and to reduce the need for a stronger core - allowing for more space - as it ascends.

Looks like about 800 metres for that tower, about 2600 feet...

The main contractor - Besix, a Belgian company by the way - says 705m not counting spheres or antennas.

So 2310 feet.

An amazing place, Dubai.

That water park looks kick-ass. My dad says that he would love to go to Dubai, but there are no theme parks/water parks there. So he says. So now he has no excuse going there. Hehe. Dubai looks amazing. And so does everything else. Like who else would have thought you could find a ski resort in a blistering hot desert? That place KICKS SERIOUS ASS!!!

So what kind of coasters will Dubailand have? Also what is the quality of food there? I went to the Philippines about 6 years ago and most of the food taste like crap and grosses me out! The beef there is nothing like the beef here. I hope the hambugers, steaks, and hot dogs taste the same in Dubai as they do in the USA.

Yeah it is true. You get the choice of Helicopter or rolls royce transfer from the airport. they have only recently re started the helicopter transfers because the shape and positioning of the helipad made i virtually impossible to land on it!

I took my parents there for a look round last week and will get some of the pics posted as soon as i get some free time.

All I can say about Wild Wadi is that it is one of the most interesting water parks in the world - it`s really up with the Disney Parks.

I`m really looking forward for Dubai`s themeparks to come, because they`ll build what they want and they can spend so money on it that it has to be amazing!

I`ll add a photo of my 2004 trip, where you can see another overview...

Just what are the reasons for Dubai suddenly having this rush to expand?

I heard that it was because their natural resource safety net of income was slowly depleting and they needed a more substantial industry like tourism.. which seems plausible.. but isn't the extent of what they are building out there seems overkill, even for that reason?

Oddly enough, I've never thought of Dubai as a holiday destination I'd put at the top of my list of places to visit, but your trip report alone makes me think that they are seriously worth considering!

Awesome stuff. It's like a whole country of "OMG COASTER CONSTRUCTION DIRT PILE!!!1" photo opportunities
