    • Pretty amazing how they only figured out it would be down for the whole year 3 days before opening, after plenty of people had paid for their season passes.  Coincidences all around, I guess.
    • ^ oh no, I'm not a LARPer . . at all. and outside, in the woods?  with people being "in character" ???     add tons of bugs, and it's HELL for me
    • I'd have thought you'd be all over the Ren Fest scene, Bert. This is something I'd have loved to have done. Easy enough to tack onto a Lagoon trip. Hopefully it can come back in some form.
    • Steel Curtain down for 2024.  https://www.wpxi.com/news/local/flagship-kennywood-roller-coaster-will-not-open-this-season/K7UHT6YEURB7RCKZ7AK5LNQ33U/
    • or.. maybe don't go to a fully immersive LARPing event if you're not into it? (it's why i don't bother with Renaissance Festivals)
    • Yeah or ya know.... maybe have a couple of actual rides so that people who aren't into the role play stuff have something to do.
    • Hah. I'm conflicted on how you got in, but that's funny. Thank you for your story and your service.
    • If you watch Youtube and search for closed or abandoned amusement parks there are tons of them.  They all seem to have the same things in common: 1. They were the next Walt Disney, 2. They underestimated the cost to build their park by at least one-half, 3. They overestimated the attendance by quite a bit, 4. They had no extra funds when things went wrong, and 5. The failure was always something or someone else’s fault. I am not sure about this one but I am sure there will be a video soon with many of these factors being an issue.  Don’t even get me started about friends that thought they were good cooks so they should open a restaurant 😉 “According to the National Amusement Park Historical Association, there are approximately 1,000 defunct amusement parks in North America, with a significant number being in the United States.[1]”
    • ^A part near the base of the ride went bad in 2018 causing significant downtime.
    • Thanks @ajfelice. Good insight to have. I guess my memory failed me but not all that surprised as the years seem to fly by anymore and COVID seemed to throw a weird time gaps and strange relativity into my recollection as of late. The Spider used to be the favorite ride of my wife and I when we were dating, though that was over a decade ago now. It was one of the few "thrill" rides I could get her on (somehow I married a non-enthusiast). Wasn't there a season where the Spider was out of commission almost the entire season for maintenance, or am I mixing this up with another ride?
    • ^Spider has had exactly one full day of downtime between 2022 and 2023. While not the most efficient ride in the world, it regularly ranks dead last among the "major" rides in terms of ridership. If staffing gets tight, the least popular attractions are trimmed first, but in recent seasons this has been less of an issue. Mechanically, the parts that experience the most normal wear are not OEM and can be replaced fairly easily.
    • Not super shocked seeing the Spider listed for sale. It seems there has been a lot of downtime in the past couple of seasons, and if I recall correctly it was down a large part of one of the past seasons because it was awaiting a new motor? There aren't many Spiders left out there and Eyerly is long gone so I would imagine parts are more scarce to come by. At least with Wipeout, Chance is still in business and likely still offers OEM parts for anything related specifically to the ride. Curious what will replace it though as it's a pretty small plot for most modern flat rides outside of "kiddie" territory. Gorman did mention that an addition for 2025 would be "something new and something big" so we'll see.
    • ...but what about girth?   Mountain coasters don't "count" to me because you as a rider are in partial control of your speed.
    • You didn't, no worries. And you made a valid point......................I just don't remember the others being such a big deal, anticipation wise. BUT as you point out there wasn't the daily social media/drone footage blitz going on AND to be fair some of those were at a time in my life when I wasn't focusing that much on theme parks. IOA for example, truly one of my favorite parks now, opened when I was about 30...........establishing a career and heavily involved in a completely different hobby that took a huge time and money commitment. About ten years later I had stopped such a huge commitment to the other thing and was introducing my son to theme parks and rediscovering in myself a long lost love for them. So all of that played a part in my probably not well thought out comment🤨
