Wonder Rakutenchi is a traditional amusement park in a beautiful mountain setting. In fact, the view is its best feature, as the park is pretty beat up and rundown (it would make a great setting for a horror movie). It has only one coaster (another of those “Jet Coasters,” which are all over Japan), but there is a funky, faded charm to the place, and where else can you bet on duck races? (It has go-karts, a haunted walkthrough, and some flat rides, too.) Not worth a special trip, but if you happen to be in the Beppu area, you might want to ride the funicular up to Rakutenchi, just for the view.
This park certainly doesn't deliver many thrills, but what it lacks in major attractions it makes up for in quirky family fun. The park's setting is amazing and the views from around the property are enough to warrant a visit if you're nearby. There are plenty of small attractions to keep you busy for a few hours, plus DUCK RACING!!
How many parks have a geothermal vent spewing sulfurous steam into the amusement area? Huh? The Jet Coaster isn't much, but it's really fun. The scary cat and dog funiculars you must take to reach the park add a lot to the atmosphere.
