FeelTheFORCE Posted July 23, 2008 Posted July 23, 2008 As the winner of the naming contest, I was able to go to Silverwood for Aftershock's opening day and ride the first public ride. The ride is very smooth, and the operators did a great job at dispatching. I wish them the best of luck with the ride in the future. Silverwood has a real quality coaster on their hands that will surely bring in the crowds. Silverwood really treated my mom and I well while we were there everything was great, they are such nice people, and it is such a great park. On to the pictures. Silverwood's Skyline from the parking lot across the street. The path that goes under the road that leads to the entrance gate area. Silverwood's entrance gate area. Corkscrew. Twisty sections of both wooden coasters with scenic mountains in the background. Getting closer. Entering "Roller Coaster Alley." Timber Terror. Tremors. What you have been waiting for, Aftershock. I'll let the pictures do the talking. Aftershock's courtyard. Lastly, my winner's lanyard. Hope you enjoyed, and thanks for reading!
alpengeist04 Posted July 23, 2008 Posted July 23, 2008 I'm glad to see the coaster is up and running. Congrats again on the contest, and thanks for the TR.
FeelTheFORCE Posted July 25, 2008 Author Posted July 25, 2008 Thanks. Yeah, from what I have heard, it has been running great so far.
Speeddeamon128 Posted July 25, 2008 Posted July 25, 2008 Great pics! How much times did you get ride Aftershock since you named it?
FeelTheFORCE Posted July 25, 2008 Author Posted July 25, 2008 Thanks. I only rode it four times that morning, but I could have ridden more if I wanted to. They were letting me, the contest finalists, and the media and their kids just keep going around and ride it as many times as we wanted. My third or fourth time, though, I was starting to get a headache because it was hot, then they let the public in and the line got really long, very quickly.
Looty Posted July 25, 2008 Posted July 25, 2008 Very Nice! I was a little surprised to see that they didn't build the platform under the cobra roll...Hopefully it wont ever valley!
CHILLERLC1 Posted July 26, 2008 Posted July 26, 2008 So far I'm glad they didn't build the valley platform. Hopefully it doesn't valley there. Does the other lower valley platforms appear? Congratulations too for riding a coaster you named.
FeelTheFORCE Posted July 26, 2008 Author Posted July 26, 2008 I believe that they are eventually going to build it, probably this coming off-season, or when Great America ships it. From what I heard, they also plan on adding the video cameras eventually. Right now they just wanted to get it up and running so people could ride it. The valley platform between the loop and second tower is there.
Guest Posted July 26, 2008 Posted July 26, 2008 The platform between the loop and second tower has to be there, easy access to the winch for maintenece workers when theres a miscatch as well as evacuations do take place there (it gets stuck there quite often). Its never been evacuated from either of the other platforms at Great America as there was no need to.
gk Posted July 26, 2008 Posted July 26, 2008 Congrats on winning the contest, that's a great name. Silverwood looks like a great park.
FeelTheFORCE Posted July 28, 2008 Author Posted July 28, 2008 Yeah, maintenance is another good reason for it being there. It was neat actually seeing guys from Vekoma work on the ride before it opened to the public, hearing them speak a foreign language and all while fixing it. This is also another neat fact about Silverwood that I thought I'd share. The whole park was built around the engine of their train. Anyone who has been there knows that the train ride isn't your normal, run of the mill amusement park train ride. It's a young park that only opened in 1988, I believe. What started the park, from what I was told, was the purchasing of that engine. In the late 1980s, the owner of Silverwood outbid Disney, yes Disney, for that engine, and built the park around it. I believe the engine is from the early 1900s. It now runs on cooking oil. Just an interesting tidbit for those who didn't know already.
