Mark's Postcard Paradise

Recommended Posts

The Santa Monica Pier and Pacific Park have been used in tons of television commercials. It seems like not a year goes by that I don't see the two featured on TV in some form or another. It's a fun little place good for a few hours visit to hang out and soak up that California beach air. This view shows the very Japanese like (in my opinion) Westcoaster by Morgan and the former Ferris wheel before it was replaced recently.

I've just returned home from an awesome vacation visit to Savannah, Georgia (no coasters there sadly, but we did pass by SFOG), so sorry for just now seeing your CP postcards Shane. Thanks for posting these great cards!

Oh and yes it is a little embarrassing to have never been to IOA. I think that's going to have to be remedied very soon!

Here's a postcard for all you Bay Area Bash attendees coming up next weekend...Kong from when Six Flags still called the park Marine World instead of Discovery Kingdom. For anyone unaware, this SLC was first named Hangman and was located at Opryland USA, which is now a flooded mall full of wet muddy clothes!

Don't forget the school of feral piranha that escaped from "Aquarium" at said Opry Mills Mall.

  • 3 weeks later...

I realize I've been a slacker for the last few weeks and haven't updated the Paradise with any new postcards. To make it up to all my loyal followers for my laziness and to celebrate Zamperla's opening weekend of their new Luna Park, I present vintage images of Coney Island and Steeplechase Park!

I was literally stunned this morning when I read the news that Will Koch had passed away. In my mind, Will (and the Koch family) have exemplified to the greatest degree everything that's good and right in the amusement industry. Having been to Holiday World and events there many times, I'll forever miss Will's gigantic smile, warm spirited enthusiasm, and his unmistakable laugh that would make you laugh just hearing it! Truly a remarkable man, I submit this postcard in Will's honor, memory, and tribute.

Will's family has asked that memorial contributions be made to the following:

http://www.lincolnamphitheatre.com/Donate.htm

https://www.jdrf.org/index.cfm?page_id=100903

When you donate to the JDRF, there's a checkbox you can tick where you can fill in "In memory of Will Koch".

^ Amazing themepark indeed which is why I've decided to dedicate the rest of this month's postcards to Holiday World, the legacy of the Koch family, and all the park employees who work so hard to make it such a fun place! Pictured here are a couple of attractions which are no longer at Holiday World - Thunder Bumpers and Banshee.

Continuing on with my Holiday World tribute, this week it's time to get a little bit more wet. Holiday World has one of the few if not only river rapids rides I can think of that floats through a flooded western town, Boulder Canyon. Pretty cool!

Tune in next week for a massive *4th of July* blow out of all that is Holiday World including some vintage goodness from Santa Claus Land!!!

The finale of my Holiday World/Koch family tribute concludes today with an Independence Day bang featuring Liberty Launch from the park's 4th of July area plus some bonus park mascot trading "baseball" cards and rare brochures from when the park was Santa Claus Land (amazing what you can find hidden away in your own closet).

Enjoy, and thank you Koch family and HW employees!

Since the new King Kong attraction has opened on the Universal Studios Hollywood tram tour, I thought it time to show the old Kong...pre-charcoaling. Oh and also here's a bonus for all you SoCal residents who felt a little ground shake this past week.

^ You're welcome, and you can look forward to this thread expanding to include postcard related park brochures, maps, and other interesting items starting when the Paradise celebrates its 3rd birthday in August. As always, if you've got postcards sitting around at home, feel free to scan them and share them in this thread. I love to see other people's collections!

For now, it's time for Comic-Con weekend in San Diego, arguably the world's biggest and coolest dork fest. The Paradise is happy to participate in this year's event by featuring this exclusive limited edition Six Flags Comic-Con postcard from 2004 (well not really but it sounds good!). Wonder Twin powers activate...

It's birthday time here at the Paradise. That's right...this thread is turning 3 years old at the end of August, but no need to wait until then to party up. So to celebrate and thank my friends here at TPR, I'm going to expand this thread to include park brochures and anything else deemed Paradise worthy. Of course postcards will still remain the main focus so never fear loyal readers!

Alright on with the show, and for all you lucky 2010 TPR Mid-America Trip participants here's an expansive update featuring Worlds of Fun with a modern postcard as well as a time warp back to 1978 when the park added the new Aerodrome themed area and Barnstormer airplane ride. Check it out!

Long ago before Dollywood became the country music mecca of the Smoky Mountains, the park was known as Goldrush Junction in the early 1970's (and before that Rebel Railroad in the 60's). The park was nowhere near the size it is today and consisted of the steam train, a mad mouse, a log flume, and a few carnival rides. Enjoy this spotlight on the park now and then.
