Well I can't give you too much on Kings Island, but I can say what you should do if you decide to go to Virginia.
If you go to Kings Dominion, you should stay in Richmond or Fredricksburg (both 30mins away), because both citys have more to do for the familys. To the west you have the mountions, which are an hour away from Fredricksburg. (Theres the caves, national bridge, and the Shenandoah valley). To the east of Richmond, you have Willumsburg, Jamestown, and VA Beach. All 3 have a lot of there own attractions, that include the Beach, more History, and Busch Gardens Europe. D.C is also an hour away from Fredricksburg (theres a train that runs there if you don't want to drive).
Now, for my opinion with going to KD>KI. Theres only a few rides that make Kings Dominion worth going too (Volcano, Anaconda, Intiminator 300, and Avalanche). Kings Island has many different things from Kings Dominion.
I really can't say more other than what I said, but I do know this. Good luck for finding some nearby stuff by Kings Island that isn't Great Wolf Lodge, or the Children Museum.
If your going with a family - KD
If your going by yourself - KI
Those are my thoughts, someone who has been to both(or has experience with both areas), post there thoughts.

I have been to both over this summer. But I would also say Kings Dominion. They have really good roller coasters.
Kings Island really had Beast, Flight Deck, and Firehawk, Diamondback.
Kings Dominion has Volcano, Anaconda, Dominator, and the new upcoming Intimidator 305! Both parks have the kiddie wooden coaster, Backlot Stunt Coaster, and Flight of Fear, but Flight of Fear at KD is way less painful.
And the crowds were smaller on Kings Dominion than Kings Island. I went to both parks on a Saturday so I know that is a fair judgement. _________________

I have to agree. Maybe it's just because I live so close to Kings Island my opinion of it is tilted but when I get down to Kings Dominion I always seem to have a better park experience.
As for other things to do besides just going to the park, there are a lot of places to go and see in the Cincinnati/Dayton areas. Like the best Omnimax screen in the world at the Museum Center in Cincinnati. Dayton has one of the best Air Force museums on the planet and River Scape is really cool to see with its giant fountains. One of which is over 200 feet tall. There is a great aquarium in Newport just across the river in downtown Cincinnati. One of the top 10 zoos and an unbelievable botanical garden are also in Cincinnati. Dayton has the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery so depending on the age of the kids it is a great hands on kind of place. There are many good water parks around the area including the one at Kings island. Less than 1 mile from the park there is another big one called the Beach. If your looking for indoor water parks there are Great Wolf and Coco Keys. _________________ SOB's Loop, the only part of the coaster worth keeping so of course that part is GONE!

Maybe it's because I'm not much into KD, but I'm going to take the other side and say that KI is a much, much better park than KD for families.
KI has a much cleaner, fresher atmosphere than KD. It also has a much larger kids area, which has constantly been given the Golden Ticket Award.
KD is more of a thrill-seeker park, espically with the addition of I305.

I don't think that's the case at all. There's plenty of stuff to do. The Newport Aquarium, Newport on the Levee (riverfront entertainment district), the riverboats tours, Museum Center, Coney Island, two indoor waterparks and quite a bit more. IMO, Cincinnati is one of the most fun cities in the Midwest after Chicago, St.Louis and Minneapolis. |
