^ We don't actually keep a physical score when we play against each other.

My parents, sis and bro-in-law are heading your way this weekend! I will def tell them to be on the lookout for Smisty's evil twin at The Christmas Place!!!

As for where to find me at the Christmas Place, search this thread for a clue!

Thank y'all so much for doing this thread. I traveled up to the Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg area last Thursday-Saturday (Aug. 13th-15th) with the old youth group that I used to work with, and we went to Dollywood and rafted the Pigeon River. Thanks to y'alls thread, I was able to suggest plenty of time wasting activities for us to do at night while we were bored.

We ended up checking out MagiQuest and had an absolute ball. Even though the pirate mini golf course ended up cheating me out of multiple holes in one. At least I was able to make it to the level of Senior Magi. It will be long long before MagiQuest forgets the awesomeness of Magi Tom Cruise!

Gatlinburg sits in a sort of cul-de-sac, semi-sourounded by the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. And traffic light #8 in Gatlinburg will lead you to Cherokee Orchard Road--otherwise known as The Motor Nature Trail.

75P1027750.JPG.14d4541ad98a4dd0a4c39148e459dee2.JPG

So there you have it. The Motor Nature Trail is a really easy way to get your feet wet in the National Park without having to go very far, or spend a lot of time away from, all the touristy stuff.

70P1027753.JPG.965c6d9686713c9210cc2608c8a8bb4d.JPG

Actually, I find that The Motor Nature Trail is more enjoyable without a car (if you can avoid being run over).

Hmmm, why is that one painted? I guess they were rich primitive settlers.

Again with the river.

Misty apparently hates this old house.

I really like this shot. (Nature is so much easier to photograph than rides.)

There's gotta be some more old houses around here somewhere.

But let's head back to the car.

See? That was worth the hike, wasn't it?

Not sure what this was for....

20IMGP5923.JPG.a6c10fab54084d466f7e1bf63d2e9ffa.JPG

Like Cades Cove, there are lots of old settler's houses along the way.

15P1027604.JPG.6328afb37173a2b5a6cda4706b5084f3.JPG

It's a one-way road for most of it.

It'd be fun to live in Gatlinburg: "Yes, how do I get to the National Park?" - "Um...leave."

Wow, funny that you posted an update today; earlier I was looking through some of your old posts and wondering what trip ya'll would be doing and reporting on next.

Amazing pictures! The Smoky Mountain area is such a beautiful place. It's nice to see photos of fall colors...something we don't have much of here.

I'm sure the question has been asked before, (please forgive me for not wanting to go back and read through your posts) but what kind of camera do you use? Your pictures always have such vivid colors.

Again, thanks for another great adventure!

^It is such a beautiful place to walk around. Some of the trails will take your breath away...literally if your overweight, smoke, and live in the flat state of Florida. Great pics as always though. For those who still have not been to Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, and Sevierville make a trip its a great place to spend a week and take it all in.

That's awesome. You totally need a life--but still, thanks.

what kind of camera do you use?

I have an Olympus Stylus Tough 6000, and Misty has a Pentax Optio W10. I definitely take more photos, but a lot of her pictures are in here, too.

Thanks for the encouragement!

So, we're thinking of hitting the area this Christmas. Are teh big coasters at Dollywood open for the Christmas event? How cold does it have to get for them to close?

I'm also hoping to ski then, maybe late December. Will Ober Gatlinburg, or the skiing a few hours away, have snow then?

Ober Gatlinburg usually opens, weather permitting, around mid December. They always try to be open for the holiday period, as they can charge an arm and leg for three slopes being open!

If you want some good quality southern skiing info, visit skisoutheast.com or skinorthcarolina.com.

All the coasters run as long as it's above freezing.

Should--even if they have to make it themselves. Not much of a skier, though, so I might not really be the one to answer that.

I also seem to recall seeing a mini golf in the Pigeon Forge area, that in need of a gimmick, or intense jealousy over Hillbilly Golf's gimmick, has some kind of mine car that you ride from the ticket office up to the start of the course. Mind you that unlike Hillbilly Golf, this track just circles the perimiter of the golf course.

Perhaps you are referring to Professor Hacker's Lost Treasure Golf?

It's actually a chain. I'm pretty sure I've even played one somewhere else. (Myrtle Beach, perhaps.)

99P4204634.JPG.30e401b6c2cdcf6801a583cd05f289e9.JPG

I'm awesome. Yet, as Misty is trying to show here, as awesome as I am, I still didn't win.

Professor Hacker's Lost Treasure Golf is a perfectly serviceable mini golf course. The holes are decent enough, and the train ride adds interest. Still, for me, it comes up just a bit short in the charm department. Maybe it's because it's a chain. But while it is fun, I would recommend going for one of the more unique mini golf establishments in the area instead.

98P4204575.JPG.fa90c1de51d110a83268d5c84507d104.JPG

This turned out to have been the mystery hole.

97P4204452.JPG.aa59a7016e3d9f593e9c05511caab74c.JPG

They do something a little bit different here. Instead of possibly getting a free game on the 18th or 19th hole, you have to turn in your scorecard in order to find out if you've won a free game or not.

There are some interesting holes.

Professor Hacker's features lots of big flashy scenery.

That would actually be pretty cool if there were bats that swooped down at you while you were golfing. (Or is that just me?)

The only real difference is scenery, and even then they're fairly similar. But fear not! Just for you, we played both!

47P4204445.JPG.9cbe1ee0cffb9c9f452b503162acd497.JPG

There are two 18-hole courses: Diamond and Gold.

Shall we...take the tunnel?

40P4204619.JPG.e4c851c070dab2b2bc0aa50232917be0.JPG

Yes, at Professor Hacker's, you take a train ride up to the top (at no additional fee) and then putt your way back down!

20P4204419.JPG.802dd5ebe6a0362199270f99ac36996d.JPG

But first, get your photo taken! (They'll be available for purchase by the time you're finished golfing.)

The club house, with the entrance to the train ride behind it.

The entrance is actually around to the side.

It's located between Pigeon Forge traffic lights 4 & 5. And, um, it opens at 9:30am.

Um. Diamond is the handicap accessible course and the Gold course has many stairs, but sure we can say similar.

I like Professor Hackers its fun, but not my favorite either. I think the best part of that day was me winning twice. I'm just saying.

  • 2 weeks later...

Never been much of a fair guy. But Smisty wanted to go, and I thought it might be a fun addition to this thread, so....

Sevier County Fair 2009

Arrrg! A sea ray has eaten me leg!

Not really sure why the pirate ship is called "Sea Ray," but I got a nice picture of its sign.

60P4294780.jpg.8b0e417808db64ee3c331c3ba107ac53.jpg

...and a couple of fun houses.

58P4294784.JPG.663e94af89ba3a299fa2a54284be4ea9.JPG

There were two or three kiddy coasters.

There is nothing about this ride that isn't weird.

Yup, we're in Tennessee.

Kind of a "midway of crap."

It didn't open until 5:00pm. (Not sure if that's normal or not for fairs, to be honest.)

Admittedly, I count fair kiddie coasters and am sad. Hey, I'll take it where I can get it.

Anyway, back to yet another great set of updates. Enjoyed this round and much appreciated as always.

Well perhaps if you would have taken some yourself. I could answer that question. Just wait until you see my pictures of Sir Goony's Golf.
