Photo TR: Monster Mansion is now OPEN!

Postby Erik Johnson » Mon May 25, 2009 1:13 pm

Hey TPR!

I just got back from a wonderful trip to one of my all time favorite Six Flags parks, Six Flags Over Georgia. In case if you did not know, they just re-opened their classic dark ride Monster Plantation with a slew of new effects, lighting, and sound. Monster Plantation, which is now renamed Monster Mansion, is considered to be the absolute premier dark ride that Six Flags has ever created for any park. I honestly think most of you will be impressed in what they have done to fix up this classic ride. This report will also be a general park update which I have to say turned out to be one of the best visits to the park I have had yet.

Heading west down I-20, what do you see off in the distance?
DSC07714.JPG
The Georgia Scorcher and Goliath tower over the front of the park.
DSC07715.JPG
Lets first go park our car.
DSC07716.JPG
Batman was testing 15 minutes before park opening.
DSC07718.JPG
Noted!
DSC07719.JPG
Mmmmmm....Mindbender. Still one of my favorites.
DSC07721.JPG
They have one of these in case you decided to bring a pet with you.
DSC07725.JPG
A classic dark ride has been reborn for 2009, Monster Mansion.
DSC07727.JPG
This little guy is considered to be the ride's mascot.
DSC07729.JPG
I am planning on visiting all three original Six Flags parks this year. This was the second one built.
DSC07730.JPG
Monster Mansion (Plantation) is considered to be the very best dark ride that Six Flags has produced.
DSC07733.JPG
Here are some of the new signs.
DSC07734.JPG
They do take an onride photo of your boat.
DSC07736.JPG
Speaking of boats, they hold about 6 people.
DSC07742.JPG
I think this has been redone.
DSC07743.JPG
You can check out your photo in the brand new version of the Monstore.
DSC07784.JPG
Its been years since this has been called the Monstore. It's back!
DSC07785.JPG
Inside the store they included a small section devoted to the original version of the ride.
DSC07787.JPG
Here is the poster.

Some character models.
DSC07790.JPG
Some information about the ride.

DSC07792.JPG
DSC07789.JPG
T-Shirts can be purchased.
DSC07793.JPG
You can also buy the beanie hat.
DSC07861.JPG
Other awesome monsters can be purchased.
DSC07795.JPG
I think they did a really great job with the ride. We were very impressed.
DSC07796.JPG
I think you will be as well.
DSC07780.JPG
Ok, let us head on over to Goliath.
DSC07747.JPG
Even though it was a holiday weekend, the weather kept a lot of people away.
DSC07779.JPG
This is what the line looked like at 1:30pm.
DSC07781.JPG
While it was running well, the trim after the helix was on pretty hard today.
DSC07783.JPG
Here is what the station looks like.
DSC07746.JPG
When you exit the ride, you walk right past the back of Monster Mansion.
DSC07749.JPG
Mindbender simply still rocks. They run it pretty the same as opening day.
DSC07751.JPG
Looks like ACE came by an dropped this off last year.
DSC07755.JPG
Its still my favorite Schwarzy, but I still need to ride Shockwave over at SFOT.
DSC07752.JPG
Through the many trees that populate this ride.
DSC07760.JPG
Close up of the bottom of a moving train.
DSC07756.JPG
I love these coasters.
DSC07759.JPG
This one does include the park queue area as well.
DSC07762.JPG
Fountain theming.
DSC07763.JPG
More theming.
DSC07766.JPG
I never noticed the warehouse extended queue trash cans before. This does make them easier to clean.
DSC07769.JPG
I can't imagine to see this full.
DSC07767.JPG
Every single one of these Batman coasters rock. And yes they are intense.
DSC07768.JPG
Wheeeee!
DSC07770.JPG
Normally I find this wave swinger to be really good.
DSC07772.JPG
I think they were running it in maintenance mode today, because this simply was pathetic.
DSC07773.JPG
I never ridden the indoor Scrambler before.
DSC07775.JPG
But they no longer run it in the dark with its special light package anymore.
DSC07776.JPG
Only open during October now.
DSC07745.JPG
We see you Goliath, we did ride it three times today.
DSC07799.JPG
Something seems different.
DSC07800.JPG
I do not know how to say the name of this ride, but the mine train is now on Flash Pass.
DSC07803.JPG
It was the second mine train built by Six Flags, it is the first coaster in the park as well.
DSC07805.JPG
Dispatch!
DSC07806.JPG
Here they go.
DSC07807.JPG
Right into the storage shed.
DSC07808.JPG
Was there a name change a while back? I thought these used to be called the Confederate Sky Buckets.
DSC07810.JPG
Oh yes! While most will not agree with me, I really like this one.
DSC07813.JPG
This coaster has some of the most extreme jolting airtime that you will ever experience.
DSC07812.JPG
Just make sure you ride in the first row of the last car, otherwise you will be in a lot of pain.
DSC07814.JPG
This is the 4th drop. Those who have ridden it know what I am talking about.
DSC07818.JPG
I rode it twice, its running great this year. Well, for me it is!
DSC07819.JPG
Acrophobia is probably they most insane Intamin drop tower in the country.
DSC07821.JPG
Here they go up.
DSC07822.JPG
Once you get to the top the seats tip further out away from the pole. Its quite scary.
DSC07809.JPG
Another shot for Elissa.
DSC07815.JPG
Which M&M are you?
DSC07824.JPG
Something big and green is now missing.
DSC07825.JPG
Thomas Town paved over Deja Vu!
DSC07826.JPG
The Thomas Train station.
DSC07827.JPG
Train!!
DSC07828.JPG
DSC07832.JPG
I think it pretty much has the same layout at the others.
DSC07830.JPG
Who is this person?
DSC07831.JPG
The rest of Thomas town consists of a playground.
DSC07833.JPG
And some other odd attractions.
DSC07834.JPG
Yes, that is pretty much it for Thomas Town.
DSC07835.JPG
Anyone know where Deja Vu has ended up?
DSC07860.JPG
For Tyler.
DSC07859.JPG
What is great is a lot of flats are on Flash Pass as well.
DSC07837.JPG
Wheelie being Wheelie
DSC07838.JPG
I have not ridden this one in a few years.
DSC07858.JPG
Most of the coaster is over the lake.
DSC07855.JPG
It does have a really different layout.
DSC07857.JPG
Heading back into the station.
DSC07856.JPG
This one also has a magic seat. First row of the last car.
DSC07839.JPG
Since 1973, this one has been thrilling coasters riders.
DSC07840.JPG
Just make sure you ride in the middle row of a car, otherwise you will not like it.
DSC07842.JPG
Also make sure you brace yourself for the brake run.
DSC07843.JPG
This classic shot is a bit ruined by the skycoaster.
DSC07846.JPG
The first B&M flyer in the country.
DSC07845.JPG
Since I just rode Manta, I can be a geek and say I have ridden the oldest and newest pretzel loops in the world in the same week.
DSC07847.JPG
Pretzel Loops are quite intense if you never experienced one before.
DSC07848.JPG
The rest of the coaster is really nothing too special.
DSC07850.JPG
It looks like old Superman has been out in the sun too long.
DSC07853.JPG
Ready for dispatch.

Almost finished.
DSC07862.JPG
Oops, I almost forgot about Scorcher.
DSC07863.JPG
I rather like this one, even though I normally do not like Standup coasters.
DSC07723.JPG
It only has two inversions.
DSC07864.JPG
Ok, let us head on out of the park.
DSC07865.JPG
Thanks for another great visit Six Flags!

Wow, SFOG has the strangest smoking policy I've ever seen. Does Phillip Morris sponser the park? ;) ;)

The video does not show it, but as you get your photo taken you see your boat on the video screen.

Great Photo TR, Erik!

Cyclone, last car...front bench. That's why it's one of my top woodies. Crazy ejector air!

Does Goliath really have a new trim on the way down the third drop? I remember someone telling me they added it this year, and it makes the helix seem like nothing compared to what it used to be. Which was AWESOME.

I miss the park!

Monster Mansion looks absolutely amazing!
If only Six Flags would open one dark ride of this quality at every park maybe they could save themselves.
