Summer Bonus Post

Hey TPR-ers-

I hope all of your summers have been as good as mine. I have been busy hitting several parks with my kids; SFMM (love the retro Revolution trains), SFGAdv (LOVE El Toro!!!!), Hersheypark (ehh Fahrenheit was just ok but love the park), Legoland (my kids still love legos) and Lagoon (hey it is my home park). We have also been incorporating other activities into our summer vacations such as Comic Con, River Rafting, Mountain Biking, camping and boogey boarding at the beach.

Of course the highlight of my Summer was the TPR trip to Europe!!!!! (thanks Robb & Elissa) I had such a great time and visited some really great parks with great friends.

One thing I have really missed this summer is posting to Shane’s Amusement Attic. I am thrilled to see that this thread has made it into the top 20 most visited! So as a summer bonus, here is one of my most favorite things I have in my attic: 2 Schwarzkopf ride catalogs. ANTON ROCKS!

I have one big trip planned for the end of the summer: Canada’s Wonderland, Darien Lake and Niagara Falls. Then I will be back with Season 2 and weekly updates to the attic.

I am gonna start off with just a couple of quick shots of summer fun then the Schwarzkopf goodness. Hope you enjoy and keep the comments coming. I am not as big of a attention whore as Big Mike (lol) but still love to here your thoughts on items posted.

Shane

It's still an amazing amount of stuff you've posted here, Shane.

And Europe and water rafting, too!!!

I love the sheets with the different flats shown on them. Takes me back to a couple I think I nearly lost my lunch on, LOL.

Great stuff, and hope the rest of your summer is going well.

Anton Schwarzkopf

Here is the second catalog I have. From the looks of this, I need to give my scanner a good cleaning, sorry about that

I sure with Six Flags over Texas would get retro with the ShockWave the way that Magic Mountain has done with the Revolution. It looked so good when it first opened all bright white with those brilliant blue trains!

Not sure if anyone has asked or not , i think i looked at this whole thread, but do you have anything to post in the future of knoebels and williamsgrove in pennsylvania ? I do have these couple things , the pamphlet i believe is from the 80's, it still has the jetstar on the front.

Then i have the 2 post cards that where from the 80's, the one of the phoenix was when it was first built, you can still see part of the parking lot in front, i remember as a kid that was the main lot before they started using the field that they use now.

Hey Shane,

I was wondering when you were gonna drag the Anton material down from the Attic. As you know, we've shared a mutual love of the man's work since we were both little blond boys -- much like your sons! We need to head down to Mexico to check our Thriller and Dreier Looping!

I've been on the road for much of the summer as well. Got to visit plenty of parks --- Waldameer (LOVE RFII), Canada's Wonderland, Darien, SFGam, SFSL, (EK's a great ride), Hard Rock Park, Family Kingdom, Universal Orlando, The Dells, Kings Dominion, and Carowinds (we'll talk about TRoad later).

Next I fly out to Lakeside to cover the park's 100th! Yeaaaa.

Once the season winds down, I plan to gear up for Season II of The Closet. Thanks for the Schwarzkopf summer bonus!

Cheers!

-Scott

MORE SCHWARZKOPF

Boy it is really good to hear from all of you again...Ron, Tatum, Mark, Bill, Den Den, Scott, and the rest. "Little Coaster Girl" thanks for the great post from Knoebels. I love to see what others have from their collection.

Schwarzkopf rides have always been favorites of mine. It might be because from the first time I saw the Revolution at Magic Mountain I became obsessed with coasters or it simply may be because every Schwarzkopf ride is GREAT.

The amazing things about these rides is they were great when they opened and they are still great after all these years.

I took my kids to Magic Mountain last week for their first time. We rode X2, Tatsu (which I lost my camera on...ugh!) Riddler, Batman, Goliath and all the others (except Superman & Deja Vu). Out of all those huge rides at Magic Mountain their favorite ride was the Revolution. And to this day if I were given the choice to ride some of the new rides or Montezooma's Revenge I would chose the simple shuttle loop (El Toro is the one exception)

His rides are not only thrilling, sleek and smooth, they are great looking too. Here are a few more of Anton's great creations from the German Fair circuit.

-Shane

PS- Mexico City sounds like a great idea!

"beautiful" this ride was supposed to be moved to Circu World along with the Weiner Looping, but the park was sold to HBJ and transformed to B&B.

Another one of Antons great creations. even with no inversions his rides ROCK. I was lucky to ride this coaster several times at a German Fair in Stuttgart.

Here is the transportable version of the Scorpion at Busch Gardens Tampa. A small ride but IMO better than some rides twice its size.

Thriller has definitely had some strange color schemes over the years. I recall riding it in Stuttgart in September 1989 (on the same day I rode Wiener looping, Himalaya, and Olympia in Munich) and it had a cool blue track with white supports. That's when it was running like Anton intended. Well, it did have those accordion OTSR (thanks Edmonton!), but it was still quite intense.

And ...

Though I rode Thriller at AstroWorld, I missed it at Marine World. It was already in the parking lot when I got there.

Despite the trains being bastardized and the neutered first drop, I still have a hunger to go to Mexico and check it out. Plus, Dreier Looping is in MC, and that's the ONLY portable Schwartzkopf I've never ridden.

Ok, Shane, let's organize a pilgrimage to Mexico and give these beauties a go. I guess we could also include Columbia and see how Zambezi Zinger is faring.

I'm just sayin' ...

I think the reason they don't use those curved lifts anymore is due to the extra maintenance. The curve lifts are mostly friction tires and there is a lot of parts and motors to keep an eye on.

My memory tells me that Anton did make a curved lift hill with a chain...maybe the Jet Coaster in Sweden???? Scott can you clarify this?

I must say I am a little disappointed that Anton's son did not do more with his father's company. It seems that the company died with the man that founded it. What a total shame.

How does the weekend of October 17th sound for a Mexico City Anton Coaster run sound? Anyone that wants to join is welcome.

Didn't his son recieve coasters that needed to be refurbished? I can think of one. Greased Lightnin' (Tidal Wave, California's Great America).

After the 2002 season Paramount's Great America announced they had sold Greased Lightnin' to Wieland Schwarzkopf and that it would be transported back to Germany. As the Greased Lightnin' was trucked away from PGA, it didn't head to port, but north to Six Flags Marine World where it was unloaded in the parking lot. Many people claimed this was a staging area prior to heading back to Germany. This proved not to be true as the Greased Lightnin' is still at Six Flags Marine World.

Yes, both Jetline @ Grona Lund und Knightmare @ Camelot use space-saving curved chain lifts. I always found these fascinating to watch.

Mexico could be a workalbe trip in OCT. We need to look at details. Is Thriller open every day? I know it's out there near Baja Mexico, while Dreier sits next to Anton's shuttle loop and one of my favorite wooden racers in Mexico City.

Yeah, when you compare the quality of, say Mind Bender at SFOG, to anything Arrow built in the 1970s you start to wonder why the HELL there are so damn many Arrows out there. Arrow did make a few good rides along the way, but they never had the consistent quality that Schwarzkopf had.
