Legoland Florida Discussion Thread

When the ride operated at Legoland Windsor, it featured odd vehicle enclosures that covered the cars with clear windows. Those added elements were removed when the ride was moved to Legoland Florida.

Thank god! Those damn windows would cook you to death in the Florida sun.

Merlin Entertainments Group has sent us a press release announcing the transformation of the Project X roller coaster at Legoland Florida into The Great LEGO Race VR Coaster.

1168278462_unnamed(1).jpg.7443f337d4bb212ccf1f4ed81dd8e8e3.jpg

Prepare to take a ride on the wildest LEGO® race ever imagined when cutting-edge virtual reality technology combines with roller coaster thrills in an exhilarating new attraction opening in late 2017 at LEGOLAND Malaysia Resort, followed in 2018 at LEGOLAND Florida Resort and Germany’s LEGOLAND Deutschland Resort, UK parent company Merlin Entertainments Group announced today.

Developed under the supervision of Merlin Magic Making, the company’s global creative and delivery division, The Great LEGO Race will transform three existing “Project X” roller coasters into an exciting, high-octane experience that puts kids in the driver’s seat and asks, “Are you brave enough to face, race and beat the best of the best in all of LEGO world?”

Featuring a colorful lineup of racers drawn from the ranks of the popular LEGO minifigure mystery assortments, The Great LEGO Race pits riders in a rollicking race against wild, brick-built contraptions driven by Trendsetter, Pharaoh, Surfer Girl, Wizard and Pirate Captain, including a rocket-powered surfboard and a stylish scooter fueled by espresso. Wearing VR headsets, guests will experience the action from every direction – up, down, forward, backward and all points in between – in a dazzling environment where everything is made of LEGO bricks.

The adventure begins as guests approach the ride’s bold new entry portal as the sounds of roaring engines fill the air. Nearby, the coaster’s queue will resemble a pre-race space where pit crews for each of the five LEGO racers are preparing for the competition, plus interactive, hands-on elements to entertain waiting riders.

During the ride, Bluetooth technology will sync the virtual visuals with the roller coaster’s twists, turns, drops and climbs, creating an all-new experience filled with thrills, spills, surprises and humor – an experience only LEGOLAND could create.

“The Great LEGO Race was inspired by the way kids play with LEGO toys at home,” said Candy Holland, senior creative director for Merlin Magic Making, which designs and develops attractions for Merlin sites around the world. “It’s a unique LEGO adventure that lets kids enter an epic imaginary world made entirely from LEGO bricks, featuring a host of different themes and fun LEGO characters, all mixed up together.”

Guests can choose to experience The Great LEGO Race with or without the VR headset. A preshow video will demonstrate the experience with side-by-side views of the physical coaster track and virtual reality environment. Its gentle thrills and amusing storyline are intended for children ages 6 and up. Children under the age of 6 that meet the ride’s minimum height requirement may ride without the VR headset.

Ugh...when will this VR thing finally die!?!?

The only interesting thing here is that they are letting 6 year olds do the VR. Didn't a bunch of parks try to convince us that Samsung said it wasn't safe for anyone under 13? And then Europa park made the European TUV do a study that showed it was fine in small doses? Such drama to put an uncomfortable sweaty headset on...

Seriously! I was really hoping parks would stop doing this once they saw what a disaster it turned out to be capacity wise. Plus, I don't think the VR adds anything of value to the ride experience. If anything, it makes the ride experience worse due to the headsets being uncomfortable and not being able to see the ride elements.

If you ever find yourself saying, "I like Wild Mouse Coasters, my only complaint is that the capacity isn't quite horrendous enough" then this one's for you!

If the load times for Kraken Unleashed are anything to go by (at that coaster has a significantly higher capacity than Project X), this ride's line will increase exponentially... I just wish there was a way to solve for the crazy capacity-killing issues with these VR options. Kraken Unleashed was decent fun but it has made Kraken inaccessible to most guests, especially those not there at opening, and I see this trend taking more rides out in this manner.

TPR had the chance to head to Legoland on Friday morning for the grand opening of The Great Lego Race VR Coaster, and we had a great time! The Great Lego Race VR Coaster is a VR overlay and re-theming to the "Project X" Mack Rides Wild Mouse located in the Technic section of the park. Overall we thought it was a great use of VR on a family friendly ride. The media they created for this attraction feels like a mini Lego Movie, it is fun, humorous and exciting - the perfect balance that you expect from the Lego brand. If this is the future of VR coasters then sign me up, it is a great way to add a little burst of extra fun if you choose to use the googles. The "normal" ride is still available for those who either don't meet the 48inch and 6 year old requirement or if you would prefer to ride without.

On to the pictures!

This is a good example of what the ride looks like, basically like an adventure in the Lego movie, with the "course" being built as you go along. It is awesome!

I think we raced well enough to claim this trophy!

The park has SO many awesome things for kids (and adults) to pose with and in. It is almost overwhelming!

Lego_021.thumb.JPG.b22145ae8b85ef16da423a600a8aa54b.JPG

We also had to visit some of our favorites, like the Lego driving school.

and Lego fire rescue academy!

Hands up if you want to ride again! I know that I can't wait to!

https://www.legolandfloridablog.com/2018/05/10/the-lego-movie-world-coming-to-legoland-florida-resort-exclusively-in-spring-2019/

I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to deliver our biggest theme park news since opening in 2011. THE LEGO® MOVIE™ WORLD will open spring 2019! It’s our largest investment yet and it promises to deliver an unforgettable experience as it puts guests right in the middle of Bricksburg, the city where Emmet lives in The LEGO® MOVIE™.

The addition of THE LEGO MOVIE WORLD represents our continuing commitment to providing state-of-the-art experiences specifically designed to create awesome memories for kids ages 2-12. The sights and sounds will be fully immersive bringing THE LEGO MOVIE franchise to life in a way that only a LEGOLAND Park could. We know kids come from all over the world to meet the stars of THE LEGO MOVIE and we can’t wait to see their faces light up as they interact within the imaginative world of Bricksburg.

THE LEGO MOVIE WORLD will be based on THE LEGO® MOVIE™ and the upcoming sequel and feature two new rides, character meet and greets and a giant themed playscape. In addition, the interactive boat ride, The Quest for Chi, will be completely transformed drenching guests in an exciting new experience when it reopens as a key attraction in THE LEGO MOVIE WORLD in spring 2019. Be sure to visit before May 29, 2018 to ride The Quest for Chi one last time!

Is your excitement building yet? Be sure to check back here on the LEGOLAND Florida Resort Blog for the latest news on THE LEGO MOVIE WORLD!

WOW. This park is on the ball, Chima hasn't proved to be a long-term property and seeing they are going to swap it out for something much more popular is an automatic win. I wonder if they are counting the change as one of the two new rides. Good job Legoland!

So For 2019 we now have:

-Harry Potter Motorbike Coaster

-New Show/Attraction in Hollywood at USF

-Mickey's Runaway Railway

-Star Wars Land

-The Skyliners at WDW

-Multiple new attractions at Legoland based off of their second best original IP ( <3 Bionicles).

-Sesame Street at Seaworld

-Unannounced but likely Busch Gardens Project

(and an outside shot that Ratatouille @ Epcot)

What a dream year.

Adam, Do you know if there are any showings of the Lego Movie 4D during Lego Star Wars days or is the theater entirely taken over by Star Wars? I'm heading there on the 20th.

Finish off the day in downtown Bricksburg, the home of Emmet’s Super Suite, a character meet-and-greet experience where guests can hang out with Emmet and all of his friends inside his apartment, the Taco Tuesday Everyday eatery, and The Awesome Shop, filled with take home memories. The downtown area will also include a space-themed playground structure inspired by Benny’s spaceship, plus special photo opportunities.

The fun doesn’t stop in the park. Enjoy the ultimate vacation (or slumber party) just steps away at LEGOLAND Hotel in a new THE LEGO MOVIE WORLD themed room.
