The Alvey's Go To NYC and Do Some Things...

Recommended Posts

2 quick questions -

1) Was that Jing Fong where you had your dim sum? (Great hustle bustle atmosphere with any authentic Chinese dishes you might crave!)

It was.

2) Do you and family have a favorite among the Scott's Pizzas Tour offerings?

Lombardi's for sure!

Oh man I want to go back to NYC and just watch broadway shows for a week. As much as I love musicals, I have never seen a show at Broadway. Of course I've only been to NYC twice and both visits were short. I need to try the cookie dough place. Why did I look at this report while hungry?

Wow. . what a great trip!

. . . .you should to a TPR trip just for shows! who needs Coney Island? sign me up to spend a week with y'all doing Broadway.

Funny you should mention that. Doing this trip actually made me REALLY want to do a NYC Trip, but the way we would do it and what we would include, it would just be too much money and I fear most of our coaster people wouldn't be interested enough. I mean, we saw a kiddie coaster, could have gone to Coney Island, but chose to do other stuff instead!

I used to live in NYC so I love 'showing it off' to people and now reliving stuff through KT that I did at her age is weird/cool.

Many thanks! (My friend who married a fellow from Thailand had an anniversary reception at Jing Fong. They are both 'well-schooled' in Chinese food and, wow, did we guests feast that night! It became our dim sum 'go-to' for me and friends.)

Lombardi's! Alrighty then! That's my next pizza spot to indulge my guests (as well as impress old local friends who need a kick in the pants to try something new)!

THANKS!

Alice

Nice pictures! I was there in NYC a few weeks ago with my dad after visiting Great Adventure, Hershey, and Dorney for the first time. We saw Chicago at the Ambassador theatre, which in hindsight probably wasn't the best one to see as father and son but whatever. We more or less just picked one, not investigating into what they actually were (dad said Chicago was about mobsters and sounded and quote unqoute boyish, well we got that one wrong). We got row 2 but on the very right seats, it was pretty interesting to see a musical from this angle with a bit of the behind the scenes stuff.

We also went into that Cathedral more or less "just because" and to pick up a brochure for my grandfather who likes that stuff. Also went around Rockefeller for a bit, I somehow missed the Nintendo store but we did go in the Lego store. Not trying to showboat too hard, but we stayed at the Marriott Marquis located on the right in your "Back in Times Square again!" picture and got a good window view of all of you guys waiting in the tkts line

I was in NY Monday through Wednesday this week for work. I did not get to see any shows this time I wanted to see Anastasia so bad! Glad I have something to look forward to next trip. I enjoyed Kinky boots as well and will have to see Miss Saigon next trip as well!

I don't understand how Hamilton tickets have gotten that much more expensive than they were last year. I knew they would go up since they added more seats for the lottery but that is ridiculous. And for the people that want to brag about it, they can't even say they saw it with the original cast anymore. And the whole thing is that the demographic of people that can afford to see the show are not the people that it was trying to target.

Great report! Looks like a fantastic time in NYC.

Of course, the highlight of my trip was being able to do a Scott's pizza tour I had been wanting to go on one since you guys originally reported years ago. The arcade looks tops. I love Tapper!

Definitely taking note on the cookie dough spot...gotta try that next time I'm in town.

Glad you saw st. Patricks its a beautiful landmark of my city although I will say next time you should see st. johns the divine as even if your not a cathedral person its an absolute must see in nyc and one of the most stunning structures in the entire city. Its also never been finished and some call it st johns the unfinished, it is the largest cathedral in the country im almost certain. Did you make it to queens at all this time or upper manhattan like inwood/washington heights, there is also lots to do in harlem, morningside heights etc.? queens is awesome as its such a culturally diverse borough you can get top notch korean, greek, Indian food or Cuban food any day in queens its definitely a culinary hotspot. I love Manhattan but living in Westchester ive also come have a huge appreciation for the Bronx, its quite a unique borough. So lively, so unique, the food, the music in the streets Ive come to greatly appreciate every single borough of NYC (though ill admit ive maybe only been to Staten island 4 times maybe even though ive lived here my entire life lol) NYC is great, all 5 boroughs of NYC are spectacular

Yeah I'm not a cathedral person, sorry. In fact I pretty much went in just to make fun of it! lol The atheist in me was very proud of that fact!

St. Patricks is cool because it's free, you can be in and out quickly and it's right near Rockefeller Center anyway so usually people just happen to be in the area and pop in while they're there. I've been in there countless times for that reason but never once was it something we actually planned in advance.

St patricks is awesome your right you can just drop in and leave and its right in the middle of all the action. St Johns the divine is an absolutely magnificent structure and is actually the 4th largest christian church in the world and is located in one of the best neighborhoods in Manhattan, Morningside Heights which is the area some of you may know as the home of Columbia. Id highly recommend a visit not only to st. johns the divine but also a visit to morningside heights which is a truly awesome and perhaps underrated area of Manhattan. The first time I stepped inside st. johns the divine I was absolutely amazed by how vast the place was, st. patricks is amazing in its own right but st johns is even more vast and breathtaking. Im not even religous I just find cathedrals fascinating, a visit to St. Peter's Basilica is near the top of my bucket list right now (a trip to Tokyo disney, dollywood, europa park, Kennywood, tivoli gardens and liseberg are all very high up there on my bucket list too! ) Luckily ive made it to many great parks though ie. Knoebels, Cedar Point/disneyland, im glad there are many that I still can look forward to visiting one day and many that I look forward to revisiting after many exciting additions in recent years!

Eh, I'm kind of with Robb on this though. I'm not religious so I'm not really that into visiting churches. I can appreciate the architecture so I'll check it out if it's convenient and I'm not in a hurry but I don't see myself seeking them out either.

Yeah, exactly. I'm not going out of my way for Jesus! lol It was there, we popped in for maybe five minutes, snapped a picture, made some Catholic school girl jokes and left. That's about my extent of interest in places of worship!

I always enjoy seeing and reading your non-coaster TRs as well. Not every trip has to be about rollercoasters and theme parks. Six musicals (especially seeing one twice on the same visit) would be too much for me as I'm not really a musical person, but I really did enjoy seeing Book of Mormon last year and wouldn't mind seeing a musical per visit to NYC. The Avenue Q one would probably interest me as I'm into South Park style of humor. I'm not a fan of puppets or Muppets in general, but I really got a kick out of Team America World Police and occasionally watched Crank Yankers when it was on Comedy Central. I'd also see Hamilton if tickets ever became approachable and affordable (I paid under $80 for Mormon last year which used to be over $200 even for the cheap seats, so it's possible). I think part of the reason that Hamilton continues to be insanely popular is because of what the cast said to Mike Pence as he was leaving the show he attended and that this pissed off Trump and he called on the cast to apologize - which just brought more attention to the musical and made more people want to see it. Instead of selling out for a few years, Hamilton will probably sell out for a decade plus now.

I also love all the different food options available in NYC. You could just do a food centric trip there and have a great time trying many different types of food or even just trying many different variations of a single type of food. I've been to New York twice now and both trips were within the last three years, and I look forward to going more often now that one of my sisters is moving there to go to grad school at Columbia and I'll have another excuse to go there.

That's all good if you don't want to go outta the way for Jesus lol, just glad you enjoyed NYC and hopefully you got to see everything you wanted to see! Definitely next time , if you didn't get to this time, I'd recommend getting out to queens and the Bronx maybe a bit farther into Brooklyn too for some NYC exploration and great food!

You do realize that Elissa grew up in NYC and we visit all the time. It's not like we haven't been to all those places you are suggesting, we just choose not to go because we're not as big of fans of those areas. And we did actually go to the Bronx this visit...

Sorry, not meaning to come off as rude it's just always been sort of a pet peeve of mine when someone implies things we've missed out on or should be doing when we are perfectly educated on the things that we do and have made specific choices in the locations we visit based on our personal preference.

Hey Robb, how come you never visit Staten Island when you visit NYC? I'm personally offended. Yes, you and Elissa may perceive it as a sh!thole, based on the stars of numerous TV reality shows, but it's really not that bad. You can take the Staten Island Ferry for free, as if getting something for free equates to real value. You can than encounter horrible public transportation. If you come in the summer months you can enjoy a minor league baseball game with a great view of Manhattan. Wouldn't you love to sit and watch a sport you have no interest in and view the goodness of Manhattan from afar. We also have the only Tibetan museum in Western hemisphere, perfect for you to practice your meditation. We have more golf courses than the rest of the city, you love golf, right? Lastly you will soon be able to visit the largest park in the city that sits on the world's former largest landfill.

Hey, be nice. Pretty soon you'll be able to pay to ride a completely pointless Ferris Wheel next door to the baseball stadium (that's currently delayed a year and 300 million dollars over budget) where you can also view the goodness of Manhattan from afar and we all know they're probably sending you to the media day. Get hyped!

Pizza.

Dim Sum.

Broadway.

Retro video games.

Animal zoo porn also featuring delinquent kids and the stupid parents that don't care/watch them until they get mauled/eaten.

Dali.

Van Gogh.

Poking fun at Trump and organized religion.

Looks like a A++ trip report to me!!

PS - Char-cup pepperoni is the best & should be the only pepperoni ever allowed on pizza. More pizzerias in Western NY are starting to use this type of pepperoni and that is a very good thing. I found it once at Wegmans, but only once. Booooo!

Regarding the pepperoni, I have always called it 'Buffalo Style Pepperoni' because 95% of the local pizzerias in the region have those cupped pepperoni. I love it, personally. Growing up I never realized it was a thing for this region; I thought most pizza was like that.

'Buffalo’s pepperoni is slightly thicker than in most places, and cooked more, with the result that it sort of curls up into a saucer shape, crispy with a bit of oil in it, what is locally known as “cup and char” pepperoni. It has more flavor than the bland flaccid disks many pizzerias across American now use"

The cookie dough looks amazing too. One of our local malls just opened up a shop with the same concept, I wonder if it compares.

I've only seen a few touring Broadway shows but your report was great and makes me want to catch a few more shows. I live about 6 hours away from NYC but have only been a handful of times. The pizza tour sounds great and I'll definitely look out for that ticket outlet you mentioned for cheaper tickets. Unfortunately that's the one thing that keeps me from going to see more theatre but I guess I never really looked for the best ways to get tickets, either.

Love the cupcake sign!
