Liseberg Discussion Thread

It's difficult for "normal people" to calculate Helix's acceleration, as all of its launches are rolling as opposed to from a complete stop. The second launch is uphill too, which makes it a little more difficult than just a speed over time calculation.

You'd have to stick a speedometer on the train AND know how steep the launches are pitched upward.

Why didn't the S&S air launch catch on? It's obviously not just a one-time technology that made a crazy launch on Dodonpa. It has used it very effectively on drop towers.

Go read the story of Ring°Racer and you might have a clue or two, haha! I believe at leas two air-tanks exploded during its life-span, each time blasting windows all around the launch track.

Also, I might add that calculating any coaster acceleration is too difficult for normal people, as what we get with the basic formula is only a linear acceleration, but in reality it's definitely not the case. One key componant of a forceful launch is the initial jerk, that hydraulic and compressed-air launch do well, but LSM are still a bit behind (tho it's getting better). We also have the rolling launches where the initial speed is not 0, and that makes the calculations more difficult.

I have measured TTD, KK, Speed Monster, Rita, Desert Race, Senzafiato, Stealth, Storm Runner, Formula Rossa & Kanonen. The only coaster that can match the launch g-forces is Senzafiato. Kanonen uses only half of the launchtrack to reach the maximum speed of 75kph @ ~2G, not even Formula Rossa reaches the maximum speed with that amount of g-force. The only coaster that can beat Kanonen is Dodonpa, but it's air-launched and my old g-force meter didn't like it I will remeasure Dodonpa in January.

Maybe forceful was the wrong word for it, I was more talking about intensity as in how strong the launch feels. A big factor on how intense a launch is is how long it sustains high g-forces for. For example, Intimidator 305 feels more intense than a Vekoma Boomerang, although boomerangs have a higher maximum g (never ridden any of them myself so can't compare).

Also, according to Lisebergs website Kanonen only goes 0-75 kmph (46 mph) in 2 seconds, while Storm Runner during that same time goes from 0-116 kmph (75 mph).

Not necessarely disagreeing with you or saying you're wrong, but Top Thrill Dragster felt amazingly forceful while Kanonen has a pretty smooth launch.

And for people wondering about the acceleration on Helix, let's just say you barely feel the launches, even though it's except for that a great coaster.

I suppose Kanonen was not included in this study.

So was Fluch von Novgorod @ Hansa Par It has a very forceful launch as well. It launches from 0-100 kph (0-60 mph) in just 1.4 seconds. That's an accelaration from 2 G's.

Fluch doesn't launch from a standstill, there's a small drop before the LSM kicks in.

They still use it on all of their launched coasters. Powder Keg, plus the three big S&S launched coasters in the Happy Valley parks, plus one more being built in China for next year. The big ones are still the fastest-accelerating coasters in the world right now.

Being one of those "normal people," this is definitely unscientific, but Powder Keg's launch feels more sudden to me. The LSMs feel like the rate of acceleration increases as the launch progresses, whereas Powder Keg feels like the rate of acceleration is fastest right at the beginning, and then the acceleration slows after that. No idea if that's actually true, but hopefully that makes some sense to you. I'd love for some more coasters to be designed with compressed air launches. It's a really fun experience.

Fixed. Yeah I'm sorry, that's what I meant. And although it doesn't launch from a standstill, it still has a very forceful launch. It must be somewhere around 1.8-2 G's.

Yep, that what we call the initial jerk.

Got on the last ride of Kanonen @ Liseberg. Can't wait for Valkyria to open 2018.

Photos will be published tomorrow.

Same here! Was a very emotional experience

But going there made me think, how on earth are they going to fit Europe's longest dive coaster and a big gyro swing in an already cramped up part of the park? I suppose the station will be at the current Burger King location? Or maybe I'm way off course.

We're talking about the country that harnesses the energy of the tears of people lost in blue and yellow furniture stores to power itself, so I'm guessing they'll find a way to fit it in.

(In all seriousness though we just need to trust the geniuses over there to fit them in somehow, by my understanding spinrock already took more space than it needed.)

Well, "leaky" what we have here. For no reason I asked about Kanonen on the site it was being sold on, and I was disclosed with some VERY interesting information

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0gv8aPVRN9Q

Someone ACTUALLY bought Kanonen! And if you think it is fake, look at Interlink - http://www.interlink-lg.com/occasion.htm It's at the very bottom as "Hydraulic Family Launch Coaster"

I even have a photo for you

It took a little bit longer that I promised to post the photos from the last day of winter @ Liseberg, but here they are:

I don't know if Interlink is just a broker for used rides besides their main water-rides... but I will ask.

The municipality of Gothenburg has given the go-ahead for the hotel and water park. Construction is expected to begin in 2019, and will be completed in 2021, the same year Gothenburg will celebrate it's 400th birthday. The cost is about 2 billion SEK ($230 million, €210 million). The hotel and water park will (probably) be themed around the Swedish East India company: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swedish_East_India_Company

The investment is expected to increase the annual number of visitors to Liseberg with 600 000.

Edit: Apparently it was the municipal board that had given a go ahead, the project still needs approval in the municipality council. Though that shouldn't be an issue since a vast majority approve the project.
