PTR: The New England Jaunt 2016

Recommended Posts

So the past few years Genx24 and I had taken numerous day trips up to New England to either SFNE or Lake Compounce. This year though, I decided why not go big? So we booked ourselves a hotel room in New Hampshire and added Quassy as well as Canobie Lake to the list of parks we would attend during this trip.

Overall the trip was a bunch of fun and everything we planned went smoothly. Nick really came through clutch with getting the NEAAPA discount tickets (Don’t ask how, a magician never reveals his secrets) which saved us a boatload of money. The first two parks we visited (Quassy and Canobie) we spent around a total of 16 dollars for admission and parking which is really unbelievable when you think about it. Anyway enough of my rambling, time to get on to the parks.

First up on the trip was Quassy. I have to say this would never be a park I planned on visiting in this life or the next but Nick suggested to me during the planning phase and I figured why not after watching Wooden Warrior pov’s. For what it is, Quassy is a perfect park. It’s a great park for families with young children or a day camp with little kids looking for place that is small, clean and easy to keep and eye on the campers. We arrived for opening, obtained our wristbands and…….Wooden Warrior was closed so we decided to grab some unintended rides on the Pirate Ship and Bumper Cars while waiting for it to open. Around 11:35 Wooden Warrior opened and we were well on our way to some fun.

Rides:

Pirate Ship 1x - For some reason Pirate Ships and I never really got along. I just don’t like them for reasons I can’t explain but we had time to kill so I bit the bullet and rode. I ended up having fun but not my cup of tea.

Bumper Cars 1x - I haven’t been on Bumper Cars in YEARS. Let me tell you people something, I was like a 6 year old in TOYS R US on his birthday. I had a freakin blast, giggling like a school girl crashing into random kids and people on this thing. It was my Billy Madison moment of the trip for sure.

Wooden Warrior 3x - Holy crap is this thing awesome. I think this was a pleasant accident for Quassy. They probably went to Gravity Group looking for a family wooden coaster and Gravity Group sat around the board room like “Lets bring the heat with this little thing they’ll never see it coming.” Wooden Warrior is an airtime machine! I was being tossed over every hill, We were in complete shock at the end of our first ride. Another bonus was that the train overshot the station on our first ride so they had to send us around again. I find it hilarious that this is a issue for them. The last time we rode we came into the station chanting “Overshoot! Overshoot!” The ride ops had to keep starting and stopping the train till it gets perfectly aligned with the rows in the station, simply hilarious.

We started our trip off with some tradition. Tim Horton's is a must before any trip we take. For me that means a Farmer's Wrap, Ice Coffee the size of my head and a Maple Dip Donut.

Wooden Warrior along with the new waterpark, new front gate / entrance building and other general improvements have really turned Quassy from a forgettable and almost run down place into a tremendous family park. I'm glad you enjoyed it, for what it is I'm a huge Quassy fan.

After visiting Quassy and stopping at Cracker Barrel for lunch we headed up to New Hampshire to spend the evening at Canobie Lake. Nick and I checked into the hotel around 3:45, cooled down for a half hour or so, then headed on out to the park.

I was very impressed with Canobie Lake. For a smaller old school park there is a ton to do. Not only that but the atmosphere and theming were great. Canobie is overall just a very fun place to spend the day or evening and I’m glad we got the chance to visit and experience it. I will say that it is a bit out of the way from the other parks to make an annual visit, unless they add another coaster. With plenty of flats to choose from, two solid water rides and 3 rollercoasters we felt that the park was one coaster away from being a “must visit” park. Do you have to visit Canobie? No. But if you go will it be worth your while? Absolutely. The park seems to be a smash hit amongst New England locals as it was absolutely packed the evening we visited (which was a Monday).

Rides:

Policy Pond Saw Mill 1x - I’m a sucker for log flumes and tend to enjoy most of them. This one was no different. A beautiful setting, two drops, including a pretty large second one. We got the perfect amount wet, so this flume was a win.

Boston Tea Party 1x - I know there are better themed chute-the-chutes out there when it comes to the “amount” of theming that they have, but is there a cooler theme for a chute-the-chutes than this? My vote is no. The entire “Ye Ole Boston” themed area of the park was incredible and gained extra points for the park with me. The area does very well creating a 1700’s Boston seaport atmosphere. By far my favorite area of the park , if they ever add another coaster I hope they can extend the theming of “Ye Ole Boston” for it. Oh yea, and the ride itself was a blast.

Canobie Corkscrew 1x - This was a credit whoring endeavor for sure. We boarded, said a few Hail Mary’s and ended up surviving. I do like the color scheme though, as well as the lift noise of an Arrow, but who doesn’t?

Mine of the Lost Souls 1x - Okay. So my review for this ride is, “What the F***k?” It starts out with only semi-cheesy special effects and a somewhat cohesive theme then takes a nose dive for the worst. With three quarters of the ride done and theming soundly focusing on an old mine we suddenly end up in ancient Egypt. No seriously, an old miner tells you to “go back” then you round the corner see a grim reaper looking figure, round another corner and there is a mummy with some cobras. After that you just end up in the station so I guess the souls remain lost and so does you mind on one of the most bizarre dark ride experiences of my life.

After these 4 rides we took a breather and ate some dinner at Sons of Liberty Tavern. The food was basic amusement park food but at least the Buffalo chicken tenders weren’t fried batter with a hollow inside (looking at you Six Flags) there was actually chicken inside them. I also had myself a Boston Lager. I wanted a Sam Adams Summer Ale but the waiter said they put the Oktoberfest tap on. It’s August, that makes about as much sense as the Mine of the Lost Souls.

Untamed 3x - This was my first Gerlauster Euro-Fighter and it did not disappoint. Big Bear Plaza is wonderfully themed as is Untamed. It has one of the most badass stations I’ve ever seen and for those of you who don’t know the supports look like Birch trees. The ride itself is awesome, great first drop, awesome hang-time on the vertical loop, the turnaround can be a bit rough but once you learn how to ride it that doesn’t matter. Overall its an awesome, forceful ride and another win for Canobie in my book.

Yankee Cannonball 1x - I was kinda looking forward to this ride after all the different things I heard about it, but boy was that about as forgettable as it gets. Not a bad ride, but just not memorable and average in every sense of the word. I’m sure it could have been better but you can’t choose your row so we got stuck on wheel seats in the middle of the train. It was smooth due to the re-tracking and had a few pops of airtime but that was about it. Hopefully I can give it another chance one day.

StarBlaster 1x - Drop towers/Space Shots are the only rides that still give me shakes so I enjoyed the crap out of this. Very solid launch with good air at the top of the initial launch. The ride queue was packed which made for an even better time because everyone was fixated on the screaming riders during the ride cycles.

As I said before I really enjoyed Canobie Lake and if you ever find yourself in the Boston area or Southern New Hampshire, I suggest you try it out to kill some time.

While on the queue they have paintings of historical events that took place in Boston during the Revolutionary Period. Great touch I must say.

We ended the day with a ride for the 21+ crowd and some baseball. My fingers hurt now so stick around for part 3 SFNE tomorrow at some point.

Part 3: Tuesday morning we packed up, ate a horrible hotel breakfast and hit the road for our two our trek from Salem, New Hampshire to Agawam, Massachusetts. The trip was a little over two hours with some traffic but not too bad. We arrived at Six Flags New England a little before 11 and paid a whopping 0 dollars for parking and 0 dollars for admission. I have to say for how overpriced everything else is, Six Flags does give you bang for you buck with admission and parking everywhere with the purchase of a season pass.

Okay, so I hate bashing parks because no park sets out for its customers to have a bad time. Also I like Six Flags New England more than some others on this site (Yes you CoasterBill) but boy did going from quaint parks like Quassy and Canobie Lake really turn SFNE up on the “Six Flags” meter. We walked to the main gate and I just got this overwhelming sense of “oh boy is this a Six Flags if I’ve ever been to one.” First off, there wasn’t a “no bags line” at security check. Obviously we situated ourselves behind a family going to the waterpark where EVERYONE had a bag. Getting into the park itself was a 20 minute process. After that it was pretty smooth sailing and your typical Six Flags day. Top tier coasters in Superman and Wicked Cyclone (Superman’s line was hauling thanks to no VR till 1) along with some solid coasters in Dark Knight and Pandemonium. The surprise of the day was besides Superman, the ops on the other three coasters we rode absolutely stunk. It annoys me to no end that there is a grouper for every single coaster in the park. Dark Knight was slow dispatches for a B&M, we had a nasty encounter with a ride attendant on Wicked Cyclone and don’t even get me started on Pandemonium (God awful!).

When we reached the station on Wicked Cyclone we politely asked the grouper if we could ride in the back row, she obliged and told us to stand over to the side. The next thing you know one of the ride ops comes storming down and begins yelling at us to move. I am a very mellow person and it takes a lot to piss me off but the way she was yelling at us both Nick and I yelled back at her that the grouper told us to stand there. She then began yelling at the ride op to “never let that happen again and she’ll throw us off the ride next time.” I knew this was going to be an uphill battle and just smiled at her as she kept on making comments. When she checked our restraints she slammed them into our laps. At that point I said to myself “have a Six Flags day.”

The rest of the afternoon went by without incident. I got another stellar ride on Wicked cyclone, ate some miserable Six Flags food as a snack and hightailed out of there to Lake Compounce for their evening ticket.

Rides:

Superman 2x - The ride looks amazing back in the original color scheme. It still provides a kickass ride even though some uncomfortable restraints for my long legs. This coaster plus Wicked Cyclone just makes it worth the time to travel up here. Two rides in the back row and we were being ejected and tossed around every which way. Simply awesome.

Dark Knight 1x - Every time I ride this coaster I begin to like it more. Short and forceful, how I like my B&M's. I consider this the "Batman the Ride" of floorless coasters.

Pandemonium 1x - Waiting on the final stretch of this queue in the beating sun is absolutely brutal but also worth it. I never not ride this and have a great time. Absolutely howling laughing the entire ride.

Wicked Cyclone 2x - This is the only RMC I've been on but boy am I blessed to have this thing in driving distance once a year. I actually liked it better this year than last. Airtime every which way, just a kooky ride. This is a must visit coaster if you're in the New England area.

You're not missing anything. Canobie Lake is a lovely little park and Yankee Cannonball is a perfectly average ride with a nice classic feel but Canobie fans are absolutely delusional and living in a fantasy world with the way they talk about Yankee Cannonball.

When we reached the station on Wicked Cyclone we politely asked the grouper if we could ride in the back row, she obliged and told us to stand over to the side. The next thing you know one of the ride ops comes storming down and begins yelling at us to move. Glad to hear you had a typical experience at Six Flags New England, the 5th friendliest park in the world. We see things like this on almost every visit. I never bother asking for anything (even nicely) because I know better at this point but I always see people who are perfectly polite get yelled at for asking questions, even on Batman where the sign says there's a front seat line and there's a bright yellow line all the way down the stairs showing everyone where the line is. If you dare talk about the huge bright line or giant sign about the front seat line get ready to face the f**king fury.

Yankee Cannonball was very middle of the road. I was expecting for it to be at least a little above average.

As far as the incident at SFNE. I will never ask any of them ever again. I was really shocked, I was gonna jump out of my skin at this 17 year old ride op at one point but realized I like WC and Superman too much to be banned

Last stop: After leaving Six Flags New England around 2:30 and stopping for lunch again, we arrived at Lake Compounce for their twilight ticket around 5 o’clock. I’ve always been a big Lake Compounce fan and it was no different on this trip. It was by far my favorite park of the four we visited. For those of you who have never been to Lake Compounce its a small, clean, beautiful park with a very solid ride collection of a place its size. Admission is very reasonable and the twilight ticket is only around 24 dollars. Not to mention they have FREE soft drinks. Thats right, as much soda and ice tea you want for free .99 its the best bargain out there. Combine this with a Pink’s and a top 5 rollercoaster in Boulder Dash an you got yourself a winner folks.

Rides:

Sawmill Plunge 1x - We were hot and tired after SFNE so we headed over to the Log Flume first. Ended up being the longest wait of the visit. Fun flume with a good amount splash.

Phobia 2x - New Hotness alert. Phobia was amazing and a perfect addition for a park Lake Compounce’s size. Small footprint with a maximum amount of thrills, its a huge winner for them. A bit on the cheaper side too, it allows for them to save some money for future additions. The only other Sky Rocket I’ve been on is Tempesto at BGW. Phobia was a far superior due to the lack of OSTR’s. I was able to catch way more air on Phobia thanks to the lap bar only restraints. Not to knock Tempesto, it was still very solid but I had more fun on Phobia.

Boulder Dash 2x - Phobia’s exit drops you right off at Boulder Dash’s entrance (no surprise there). I honestly can’t say enough about this coaster, it is truly a top 5 ride. From start to finish this thing is relentless, it absolutely FLIES through the course. Seriously if for some reason you’ve never heard of this ride put the pov on this second. The airtime is ejector, not because the hills are steep but because it takes the hills on at such an insane speed it feels like you’re going to fly out of it. One of the only rides I’ve ever been on that I can say it truly feels like “holy crap this is out of control the train might F***kin derail from the tracks”. I can’t do anything but laugh the entire time. Get up to Bristol CT and ride this thing ASAP people.

Wildcat 1x - It looks nice upon entering the park but kill this thing with fire is my review.

Pink’s Chili Cheese Dog with Onion Rings 1x - Such a shame I was only able to eat one Chili Cheese Dog this trip. If you ever find yourself at Lake Compounce make sure you eat here and nowhere else. It’s magical.

The Mean Streak trick works on Wildcat. Otherwise it's brutal. Walking up to it it I always question how it can be so small but still so brutal. Front row lean forward.

We sat front row and I leaned forward, but even that didn't save me from a spinal adjustment.

Good god, that thing must have gotten really terrible then. We rode it 2 years ago and I think it was re-tracked in the previous offseason.

I really liked this report. I have to do another NE trip, but I'm waiting to see if SFNE's horrible policies will ever be changed. I'm not going back to that hell hole until they ease up on the assigned seating and fix the general operations. Little things like that are enough to ruin my day. I would have definitely reported that ride op on Cyclone. You were following exactly what you were told to do, and that gave her no right to become ballistic and show such poor customer service.

I always forget what a nice little park Canobie Lake is. I'll definitely have to consider it on my next trip. Untamed seems like a fun little ride.

I really felt like reporting her but it was our last ride of the day so I just bit the bullet. Canobie is awesome, I recommend it to anyone. Untamed is awesome, very very forecful. It packs a punch for such a small ride.
