The Cruise Ship and Cruise Line Discussion Thread!

Recommended Posts

...Last I think that would be fairly loud and annoying outside.

Not if it were electric go-karts!

Theres a fairly new indoor family fun center in my town that has electric go karts, and I got to try it out with a friend. While they're not the most exciting things in the world, I did quite enjoy them! They go plenty fast on a tight-enough course, and I would assume any kid would have a blast on them!

But I do agree that having them on the ship might have not been the best idea since that space would have very limited uses. A court on one ship could serve a huge array of sports, a ballroom converts into a meeting space/bumper car arena/roller skating arena/dance club/dining hall/wedding area/etc., but a go kart track could serve as that and maybe a jogging track... I think?

^ What d you mean "under construction?" Those things are done. The ride sends patrons into the eternal abyss...

You do have a point!

Edit: After a bit of digging (and raised suspicion after looking back at the rendered image of the ship), I found that the ship will also have a butterfly/double-looping water slide onboard! That's probably the first of that type at sea too!

The ship will include a racetrack with go-cart-like cars, laser tag, bumper cars, Oculus Rift virtual reality, car racing simulators and two multistory water slides.

The Double Aqua Loop slide includes one loop that extends out over the edge of the ship and a second see-through loop that stretches to the deck below, Norwegian said.

The tandem Aqua Racer slide will enable two people to race side by side on inner tubes for more than 360 feet.

No surprise considering some water slides (ESPECIALLY in Europe) have gotten crazier these days!

Watched the video. It is pretty odd they spend most of it talking about luxury, VIP, top brands, targeting the wealthy traveler and then intro the go-karts. Talk about incongruous. Is go-karting a luxury in China or something? I would associate go-karts more with Carnival Cruise lines than anything else.

The major lines all try to be all things to all people. You watch the in room Royal Caribbean channel and they go from discussing drinking Louis XIII to bumper cars in a span of 90 seconds.

Has anyone seen the new DCL summer prices. I know disney charges a premium but these price seem absurd. I did a mock booking on a 7 night Alaska sailing in July and a verandah stateroom for 4 is 14K. Thats about double the price of a similar room on RCCl or Celebrity.

Probably a "we need something unique that Chinese kids will love because westerners love go karts!"

Disney has always priced themselves like a deluxe line while producing a mainstream line product. But most DISNEY DISNEY DISNEY people are addicted to that brand like Lindsey Lohan is cocaine, so they'll go in debt for the privilege of watching Mickey's Sailaway Dance Party or whatever.

Norway's "Hurtigruten" just announced that they are building at least 2 new "explorer ships". They will be built at "Kleven shipyard" in Norway and the first will be ready in 2018 and the second in 2019. They also have a contract for 2 extra vessels if they need them. The vessels will sail in the arctic areas.

I LOVE the design

If a James bond villain had a cruise ship! I guess the black design against the arctic snow and ice make them easier to spot.

Its been over a year since my last cruise and I have the shakes!

So this is a departure from the "typical" cruise ship experience, but I wanted to put together a trip report for the overnight cruise ferry that I did a few weeks ago that went from Copenhagen Denmark to Oslo Norway. These European cruise ferrys have been featured in a few trip reports that Robb and Elissa have done before, although this one is a different company and route. It was overnight (we boarded around 4pm and arrived around 9am) and the cost was similar to an inter-europe air fare and one night in a decent hotel. It was our anniversary, so I decided to splurge and upgrade us to the lowest category of room that included access to the concierge lounge and also free breakfast. This cost about 60euro extra (for both) and was a GREAT deal since the breakfast alone would have been 20euro each and the lounge had unlimited beer, wine, sodas and snacks. These ships do have complementary entertainment, but you do have to pay for all food.

Anyways... on to the photos!

Our first glimpse of the shio! The bottom is where the cars drive in - it really is a ferry!

Hey! Thats the route we are doing... so European looking. As we soon discovered, we think we were the only Americans on the whole ship.

IMG_7902.thumb.JPG.8fb92d4c0526f0ed5553e0b957d9fc5d.JPG

Check in was done entirely on kiosk! It printed out your boarding/room "key" which was little more than a hard paper ticket with a mag stripe on the back. Wrinkled after one night!

I love ship models! Wish they had this one to purchase.

European kids are REALLY excited about this cruise!

We spent a night on this ship and we still aren't really sure of the name. Crown Seaways was used pretty much everywhere but there was also a few other names around..

IMG_7906.thumb.JPG.e63ce94a60636ec03b7b365c3514404e.JPG

Walking the gangway onto the ship... it really is like a cruise!

IMG_7908.thumb.JPG.badbd0b5f140bdf489410ee0e423f669.JPG

Aaaaaaaaaannnnndddd... our grand entrance. OK - so our first impression was "Carnival ship from the 1990s" but many other areas have been upgraded recently as you will see in other photos!

IMG_7909.thumb.JPG.a80e9fe36f078ef67942f41bd4bf18b3.JPG

Our room was AMAZING! One of the largest rooms on the ship and well worth the upgrade. We were dead center in the front!

Largest bed we had during our entire trip!

FREE minibar with sparkling wine, their own microbrew beer and bottled water!

View from our stateroom.. how awesome is that! It was in the low 40s outside so a great indoor view helped!

In the lounge Stacey is excited to try the super salty pretzels, weird cheese covered nuts and various other stuff!

Unlimited wine, beer and sodas!

The peons can look down at us in the lounge :)

The had a selection of the menus - you can see they are pretty pricey, even by Scandinavian standards. The pizza place was reasonable, so that is where we decided to have dinner.

IMG_7925.thumb.JPG.eeea784106d3f502eb11087fac610147.JPG

Obligatory!

Time to sail away form Copenhagen! It is freezing!

IMG_7936.thumb.JPG.8b78d3ded7e8d7f8a36dfd42027bb975.JPG

The indoor spaces were nice. This was the wine bar. Things did get busy later at night.

IMG_7938.thumb.JPG.b540cde7d6e66ad2fc2995425fbf33fb.JPG

The buffet was getting set up, but it was pricey and a little too seafood heavy.

IMG_7939.thumb.JPG.75899682ba787811f435591a2f54b401.JPG

More buffet!

IMG_7943.thumb.JPG.335eb5e6ac1d436da768b56ce0026742.JPG

The duty free shop took up a huge chunk of one floor.

IMG_7944.thumb.JPG.968d1a1b3a285929103a35cf41de195c.JPG

It was so big it even had supermarket style registers!

IMG_7947.thumb.JPG.dd735b35d633f60e16db70c7daa91874.JPG

And a meat and cheese cold case!

IMG_7955.thumb.JPG.7bc5c46afa4efab7e90ef75b7caf6f42.JPG

Stacey was very excited that there was a Mermaid Bar... but it wasn't open. So we brought our sparkling wine out into the cold windy weather anyway!

IMG_7956.thumb.JPG.3fdb46bb3d62e1798c4ab8b73597b4fa.JPG

So strange to see a flag on a cruise ship that isn't Bahamian!

IMG_7958.thumb.JPG.5f99bc226bb03b0a03b95e398cd54371.JPG

You could get SUPER close to the bridge while sailing!

Part 3 and Final! Overall we had a GREAT time and would do something like this again in a heartbeat!

IMG_7973.thumb.JPG.00c8546a861fa3cdf2a8c5be7d89985c.JPG

So much to see before the sun went down, this was the castle from Hamlet on one side and the other side was Sweden!

IMG_7974.thumb.JPG.4129b799de9feb6a4037c95b8ede8e29.JPG

One of my favorite things to photograph, no matter what cruise I am on in the world...

IMG_7979.thumb.JPG.8a7a8da9e523037c1d5e6ca0dbf37c88.JPG

The actually had a decent promenade deck that if the weather was nice would have gotten some use!

Our dinner menu! Prices were not horrible and the pizza was decent!

PIZZA PIZZA!

IMG_7987.thumb.JPG.d94c1b9937ca15870567dd6885c78fe2.JPG

This is one of the upgraded spaces - not bad for a cruise ship pizza joint!

The pub which would be hopping later!

Only cruise ship I have seen with multiple pay phone rooms! Never saw anyone using them however.

IMG_7995.thumb.JPG.86e82fa36420c55b1f389077e3bfd34a.JPG

After asking around for hours, we finally got this handy list of the cool things we can see along our route!

IMG_7998.thumb.JPG.c6421d9a875efcb6be334c965db65a4f.JPG

We also finally found the "pool"... it was super weird, empty and you had to pay 5euro to swim.

Deserted kids play area

Indoor "pool" :)

IMG_8006.thumb.JPG.c67bbf7035c427ea5f422b05ef9dec6f.JPG

They converted two staterooms into an arcade which was kinda weird!

IMG_8007.thumb.JPG.5a8e38508e8412d8dcce1b6c570fe088.JPG

Guest Services seemed to be more about selling items than actual service.. :)

IMG_8015.thumb.JPG.613532922995486646c7a4edddba77cb.JPG

The main lounge was HOPPING! Decent singers and hilarious to watch the Scandinavians dance without a care in the world!

IMG_8017.thumb.JPG.be7e96621b52f29c512160fdaf18e80a.JPG

This was our favorite place to sit on the ship. You are in your own little hidden world when you sit there!

IMG_8021.thumb.JPG.d563001d7de86b3ed55e9b12c240ec2f.JPG

Other lounge that didn't even get going till 2300 with a DJ. Crazy for a one night cruise!

IMG_8025.thumb.JPG.18696e1ea08296978b95b472b6866408.JPG

Breakfast time! We had a separate and much nicer buffet in the Steakhouse. Fresh mixed juices, lots of cheese, pastries, etc.

Yum!

That actually looks pretty decent. What did you do once you arrived? And did you feel sea sickness?

We had actually been to Oslo before Copenhagen, so this was just returning for one last day before our Flight. Oslo is a BEAUTIFUL city and spending 3.5 days there really just let us scratch the surface.

I don't usually get sea sick, but Stacey sometimes does and we didn't have any issues on our voyage. That being said, I did read reviews that this route during the fall can get a bit rough. Since it is a smaller ship, it would be a different experience than a large ship in the Caribbean.

Yeah, it's both weird and awesome being on one of these 'small' cruise/ferry ships. We listed so much at one point on one of our crossings that I left the restaurant and stood near a door to the outside until we righted ourselves again!

Thanks for the report Reed!

I wish we had all of these different methods of cool transportation in the US!

Same here. It'd be awesome to be able to experience a short Cruise like this within the US. *sighs* maybe some day!
