The Six Flags Magic Mountain (SFMM) Discussion Thread

Recommended Posts

^ If that's not the most "Six Flags" thing I've heard all day I really don't know what is. Just spring for the cost of shipping. The "museum" with no permanent exhibit space clearly doesn't have any extra money lying around to ship a huge coaster car across the country.

20 Years ago this morning, the Northridge Earthquake hit. As a result, a bridge on Interstate 5 and in the I-5/CA 14 interchange collapsed. The collapsed bridges were cleared in days, and rebuilt by the end of the year. BUT while they were being built, traffic only had a narrow bypass to use to get through the Newhall Pass between Valencia where SFMM is, and the Greater LA area.

Traffic at North I-5 at the I-405 merge heading towards SFMM. Quake struck in January, bridges were rebuilt and reopened in November 1994.

Damage to a building in the Valencia Industrial Center, less than a mile from SFMM

SCVHistory.com provided the above images and has a great article looking back and providing an enormous amount of great information recapping and describing the earthquake itself and the aftermath. For those of you who don't live where earthquakes exist, this is a great way to learn about what really happens in an earthquake.

I completely disagree. I say good for Tim Burkhart. I don't blame him for being skeptical about it and not wanting to spend thousands of dollars shipping it. Maybe if the museum was actually something more than a warehouse full of stuff and a traveling exhibit...

^^When I spoke to Tim Burkhart @ WCB of 2011 he said it was being stored underneath X2 because some roller coaster museum wanted it but he told them he wasn't paying to transport it.

I vaguely recall a passionate roller coaster conversationalist soliciting funds on this very site for the honorable cause of preserving roller coaster history so as to provide enjoyment for future generations. This would be right up his alley, although I'm not sure if he counts S:TE as a credit or not.

No news from me on X2 since I don't like it or ride it. It did shorten the other lines for me - thanks.

Today was a great operations day at the park in my opinion. First of all it wasn't very crowded. I arrived at 2pm after flying across country to get there. All the rides had 2 train operation (YOLO, Goliath, Scream, "Pocky",Ninja, Colossus, Riddler, Goldrusher), and for the most part were well staffed. Superman was even running both sides today! I got quite a bit of tower interaction on Lex several times.

Some footer work where the old tree was for the new ride. They've done a lot of blacktop work where there were leaks and major cracks in park walkways. A lot of good has happened since I was there on 12/30. See not always bad news.

First ride of my 2014 season = YOLO!!!

Here's a small update

^Update time

2.thumb.JPG.c1215954e149fdc175cedc52466758ac.JPG

No one else wants to get in early.

1.thumb.JPG.cfc2bb1100322594ee846e7490581d87.JPG

2nd train of the day and no line!

3.thumb.JPG.c8a0e97d0241e6a7ab9f8d5651022c92.JPG

This was probably the longest Full Throttle's line was all day

4.thumb.JPG.0479426ea797e50816bb6eafdd025bce.JPG

X2's line after opening. The ride opened about 15-30 min. after the park opened thus no lines on practically every other ride in the park.

5.thumb.JPG.27ab0b08b6ecfdb46208ffae11f791a1.JPG

Tatsu had no line and was running much faster than the last time I rode it.

6.thumb.JPG.896ea0c2b158d0d442f8aeffa41e7dfc.JPG

Nothing to report on the exterior.

8.thumb.JPG.e8976a79d0825f413bef10db6195450f.JPG

Inside though most of the interior is being removed.

7.thumb.JPG.d9092b92660bd9ff726033de4151ddc7.JPG

I wonder if the park will demolish or remodel the former Log Jammer station considering Mooseburger Lodge right next door is getting a remodel.

9.thumb.JPG.8375f308988521c2597f6542268e57ea.JPG

Over by the tree some work has started on something.

10.thumb.JPG.173423d384f079f786ab7e6810814a3e.JPG

New entrance to Bugs Bunny World possibly.

11.thumb.JPG.0d8ed2d91051f49f95957a6b41489b86.JPG

So yeah the park has started work on something.

12.thumb.JPG.ffacdc81967cc282e44b84b0e14fb3b6.JPG

I always enjoy the trees around the park this time of year.

13.thumb.JPG.c0c6dcfea40abb1f61cf01c5ac18ba4e.JPG

Clearing for new coaster 19 this was the former location of a small train ride (the larger train is over in Whistle Stop Park so its not really a loss.

14.thumb.JPG.665a3a99debc35077e3ec85ad676b6a9.JPG

Both the train and Tweety's Escape have been removed all that's left is to remove the concrete. Oh and some trees have been chopped down in the surround area.

15.thumb.JPG.e435ab15e8a7a643354956f48b4d0cbf.JPG

This former Dippin' Dots location right next to the removed train will be demolished to make way for new coaster 19.

16.thumb.JPG.761f3e0f0d5375ac8f294e44e50af0c7.JPG

Tweety's Escape has been removed

17.thumb.JPG.66790aff7261c14ec4813a6dcdcef1a4.JPG

...and moved over by Road Runner Express.

18.thumb.JPG.2f40497b679cb86d16fb2210bdc3d6b7.JPG

All the midways where empty all morning. Also a lot of cracks in some of the midways have received some new asphalt all that's left is to color match the asphalt to the area.

19.thumb.JPG.1c1c7c933c884a21b0e540cab72bc0c9.JPG

DC Universe received some plants and such for the center planter. Both the entrance plaza and Riddlers plaza received some new flowers from what I could tell.

20.thumb.JPG.97460d61a23c04daa756fd776d016283.JPG

Batman was the only ride running one train but was a walk on for most of the day.

22.thumb.JPG.7ee199fd0c2a9a0a1888b8046ffcd198.JPG

Colossus has some backwards trains ready to run (still running forwards though). Anyone know why there's a crane in front of Colossus? Its the same type of crane that sits behind Full Throttle but there was another one sitting in front of Colossus it may already be gone but saw it while riding.

23.thumb.JPG.92f74696e88b1aebd71bb11df922c1ef.JPG

Scream had no line all day and surprisingly running very smooth at least the recently refurbished train was, the other train not so smooth.

25.thumb.JPG.1c0cbffa800c692a916b8083159a96a9.JPG

Superman was surprisingly running both sides for most of the day.

26.thumb.JPG.eb448449077e05784c1d2421ed58c6c2.JPG

Apocalypse, 2 layers of new wood and 6 layers of old wood.

27.thumb.JPG.a52d3dd3b0d52b0b4ebfca251a346026.JPG

Don't pull your lap bar down (after the op's tell you not too) so the entire train has to be rechecked, saw it so many times yesterday.

ADMIN EDIT - I'm going to add a few more photos that Joey took today as well...
