Lagoon Discussion Thread

I love Lagoon. Whether it's considered a small park or a large park I really don't care. All I care about is having fun at a park and when I went to Lagoon I had a blast. They had a great mix of family rides and thrill rides. Even if this coaster is a 200ft monster or another family coaster, I still think Lagoon is a great park for anyone to enjoy. I will definitely be heading back to Lagoon with the family even if this new coaster doesn't pan out.

Don't forget about how amazing Lagoons Ride ops are.

They were seriously kick butt the day I was there. Roller Coaster and Bombora, both are very short rides, were running two trains and neither was stacking. At any other park they definitely would have. Colossus was only running one train, but dispatch times were well under a minute...With only ONE attendant checking. Take that six flags!

The food though, was by far the most expensive park food I have seen. A 12 inch subway hoagie which is normally $5, was $12. Well over the $8 at SFA and SFNE.

It's because people are allowed to bring outside food and drink into the park, so they don't have as many food sales as other parks of it's size, or larger apparently.

Lagoon opened for their 127th Season this past Saturday with several changes and additions. The two new family rides from Zamperla, Tipsey Tea Cups (midi tea cup) and Red Rock Rally (speedway), did not open due to being held up in customs. The Rides and the Areas around them look Great and can't wait to see them operating this Weekend.

Other changes this year include Lagoon's Maurer Wild Mouse having it's Track painted from Purple to Leap Frog Green, Lagoon's Rock-O-Plane received a "hypnotizing" new color scheme, and Fire Dragon celebrating it's 25th Anniversary at the Park with New Blue and Cream Paint. Unfortunately, Wild Mouse's Structure wasn't repainted and the Waiting Zones, Reduction, Loops, and Station on Fire Dragon were also not repainted.

But here's a preview:

Thanks for the update! THis is definitely the year I have to go out there and visit. I have a few friends out there, and I can teach a class so it would be perfect!

"Fire Dragons" are blue? Well, it still looks nice.

Maybe they are trying to steal the Fire and Ice idea from IOA.

I've been going to Lagoon since the early 1980's, always have a good time. It's a throwback to another era, it has that charm some parks just have. They had an awesome fun house into the 90's complete with a spinning tunnel, moving planks made of wood, bursts of air from the floor, and in indoor slide. Good times. Don't go expecting a Cedar Fair or Six Flags park and you will have fun.

Wild Mouse's green track looks much better than its old pink track.
Mouse actually had Purple Track, which i kinda miss, but I'm really digging the Green.

A therapist concerned about the message of sexual violence a scene from Lagoon's "Terror Ride" sends is asking the amusement park to reconsider its inclusion.

Jeff Tesch, a marriage and family therapist in Ogden, said he boarded the ride last week and viewed a scene of two women bound and dressed in lingerie. He remembered working with adolescent sex offenders several years ago, one of whom told him this scene was a trigger for him. The client had admitted to riding the "Terror Ride" for arousal, then looking for opportunities to act out.

Tesch said he did not do anything about it at the time, but after working with victims of sexual violence and listening to their stories, he is now requesting that Lagoon remove the scene.

"I remember the ride bothering me back then," Tesch said. "We need to be more sensitive. I think a lot of people would never have imagined that a ride like that, or images like that, could actually trigger individuals who are perpetrators.

"I would wonder, too, about anybody that's been sexually abused, their reaction. One in three women now experience some kind of sexual abuse or sexual violence," he added. "It kind of surprises me each time I've ridden it over the years that something hasn't been done — that someone hasn't spoken. It's pretty blatant and clear the way they're dressed, the way they're tied."

Tesch said it is time for Lagoon to take another look at "Terror Ride" and reconsider removing the sexual scene.

"I'm not angry at Lagoon, I'm not trying to make a problem; I just think it's something that should be looked at," he said. "Lagoon itself should recognize that this is a theme that doesn't sit well. I think being responsible as a park and a business is to take it out."

Lagoon's Vice President of Marketing, Dick Andrew, said the amusement park was not aware of any complaints in the ride's decades of operation.

I'm not angry at Lagoon, I'm not trying to make a problem, I just think it's something that should be looked at.

–Jeff Tesch, therapist

"We'll obviously take a look at this particular thing in question and do what we think needs to be done," he said.

He mentioned, in particular, that the park keeps its seasonal horror attraction, "Frightmares" mild, avoiding graphic scenes.

Tesch said that, in general, the attitude toward and portrayals of sexual abuse should be re-evaluated.

"Maybe we do need to take a good look at even things we're supporting that might be further promoting that type of behavior," he said. "With our better understanding about sexual violence against women and the treatment of offenders, I would hope that they would take a look at it and say, 'This is something we could adjust.' And it's a healthy thing for people who visit their amusement park."

"Because I have one crazy patient, clearly that is enough reason for it to change. Never mind the millions of guests it hasn't offended and/or made do inappropriate things..."

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2398651/Zookeeper-Utah-amusement-park-hospitalized-gored-leg-wildebeest.html

A zookeeper at a Utah amusement park was hospitalized after being gored in the leg by a wildebeest on Sunday.

Paramedics responded to a report of a goring at the Lagoon amusement park in Farmington, about 20 miles north of Salt Lake City, Davis County sheriff's Sergeant Susan Poulsen said.

Farmington Fire Chief Guido Smith said responders found a 28-year-old female employee who had been gored during a feeding process, when she 'came in contact with the animal's horn.'

The woman suffered an injury to her thigh and was transported to a Salt Lake City trauma center, where she was in serious but stable condition, he said. He described the injury as a laceration. Smith had no further details about how the injury happened but said the wildebeest was in its pen at the time, and there was 'no evidence of anything out of control.'

Wildebeests are hooved mammals with ox-like heads and horse-like manes.

Lagoon amusement park spokesman Adam Leishman confirmed that the zookeeper was hospitalized but said he had no information about what led to the injury. He said the park keeps a number of exotic cats, bison, deer, warthogs and other animals.

Lagoon park also features rides, live entertainment and an Old West-themed village, according to its website.

Earlier this year, a protest against Lagoon was staged by animal rights activists who claimed that the living conditions of the park's 80 animals were poor and unfit for wild animals.

Poulsen said Utah Occupational Safety and Health officials were looking into the workplace accident. Utah's No. 2 labor official, Jaceson Maughan, declined to provide any additional details.
