robbalvey
I sure hope you used your fingers to write "TPR" in the snow instead of using another writing style. Well, you didn't see any yellow did you? --Robb "Will do Tokyo Disneyland Countdown Party update when I get up in a few hours!" Alvey
Luxo
I guess Americans are too lazy to operate a theme park in the winter. Cool gloves Robb! They should match your plastic purple teeth from Boomers. Where's the Quaker??
cfc
Twenty-four degrees? Sheesh, and I thought it was cold riding Top Gun during Winterfest at Carowinds on Dec. 10. I've always thought that BGW could pull off an excellent Christmas promotion--decorations and Santas from all the different countries, a cool Christmas train ride, not to mention excellent Christmas goodies from their bake shop or a nice dinner in the Festhaus. But I have mixed feelings about staying open all year. As I get older, I find that I enjoy deferred gratification--there's just something about opening day. Plus, Busch can do a lot of maintenance during the off-season.
robbalvey
These parks do the maintenance too, they just do it one coaster at a time which is why the SLC was closed. But yeah, seeing the parks open here makes me realize there is no excuse why any park in the US couldn't be open all year round! I'm sure they have reasons, but looking how they do promotions all year round (Halloween, then Christmas, then countdown, etc) why can't the US parks do it too? Oh, well....at least I know there are parks open somewhere in the world other than CA and FL during the "off season!" --Robb

pianojohn
I think that the Japanese culture doesn't freak out when they have snow or cold temperatures like the USA. When I worked in Osaka in 2001, it was freezing, snow, etc, but most of the people I saw going to work and school had nothing on but a windbreaker while I was in a down coat, gloves, hat, etc. If you had the parks open here, people would FREAK out if they didn't heat the outdoor que lines! I think we are just spoiled. Anyway, keep up the great TR! Can't wait to hear what you thought of 24 hours at TDL. I did that in 2003-04 and was amazed that most tourists just crashed on Main Street during the early morning rather than leave the park! We did the parks until 6am, went home and slept for a few hours, then went back in the afternoon.

robbalvey
Day Ten - Part Two: Tokyo Disneyland Countdown Party During the planning part of this trip we found out about this New Years Eve "Countdown Party." Basically, here is the deal. The park opens from 10am to 6pm on New Years Eve for normal operation, then re-opens again from 8pm to 2am for the Private Party, then re-opens yet AGAIN from 2am to 10pm (yes you read that correctly!) So when we found out about this, we HAD to go! Luckily (thanks to Chris) we were able to get tickets via Yahoo Auctions that weren't much more expensive than the face value of the tickets. Now, we were told in advance all these stories of the hundreds of thousands of people who would show up, and how we wouldn't get to ride anything because it was wall to wall people. Hmm....well, yes, there were hundreds of thousands of people there, yes, but we got to do a LOT... Anyway, onto the photos! What was the point of even changing it???? Ok, we need to get back to Disney. I'll post more Tokyo Disney photos later! After seeing the old version of the queue, I realize more and more had the new California version was hardly updated. "Yo stalkers, check me out. I'm the Quaker. For $500 you can get this picture autographed!" It's California's Space Mountain cira 1977. Lines were actually pretty damn short duing the Countdown Party! Small World Holiday. Annoying? Yes. But at least they don't play the song over and over again! But it does have a Donkey so that makes it ok. Yay! We even got on Pooh! Too bad this ride is SO AWESOME because I hate Pooh!!! More people camped out, blankets and all! There were parades than ran for hours! I think half of Japan was working crowd control that night! Hey look! It's more Mark for the Quaker fans!!! It looks pretty kick ass at night. Time to start riding! Big Thunder first! What you are looking at is 100,000 Japanese camped out on Main Street waiting patiently for the fireworki\s! This was the MASS amount of people waiting OUTSIDE the park! The awesomeness that is Japan got through that line in about 15 minutes!!! Tonight's cast of chracters does in fact include Mark for all you stalkers out there! Yay! It's the countdown party!!!! (They even had one in my Animal Crossing town!) It's going to seem weird using this same ticket in the fastpass machines for the next 30 hours! Yay! Back at Disney with the kick ass monorails!!!!
