ParkTrips Posted January 25, 2006 Posted January 25, 2006 From the Orlando Sentinel Magical Midway amusement park on International Drive has a new tower thrill ride known as the StarFlyer. The nearly $2 million attraction stands 256 feet tall and lights up after dark. Visitors board the StarFlyer on an 18-foot high platform and sit in a chairlike swing. The ride holds up to 18 passengers with six single seats and six double seats. The chair-seats are attached by chains to the star-shaped center car, which revolves up the tower and causes the seats to fly through the air at 54 mph, reaching heights of more than 230 feet. The StarFlyer, which offers a panoramic view of Orlando, was designed and constructed by the Austrian company Funtime. The company is also known for the popular Sling Shot, a two-seat vertical attraction that launches riders out of a "volcano" 365 feet in the air at more than 100 mph. The Sling Shot is also located at the Magical Midway thrill park. Magical Midway features two wooden elevated go-kart tracks, a flat track, thrill rides, a collection of classic midway rides and a large state of the art video arcade room. It is located at 7001 International Drive, two blocks south of Wet 'n Wild. Oh yea, forgot to say it... Star Flyers rock!
robbalvey Posted January 26, 2006 Posted January 26, 2006 I am still in disbelief one of these got built in America! --Robb
TheStig Posted January 26, 2006 Posted January 26, 2006 Haha I just realized that this article is from the same paper that stated that montu goes backwards! Well alteast it SOUNDS like they god some info right! Well it's cool that there is one of these in America, and that it's fairly close to where I am. I might have to go there next time I got to IOA or something... Colin C
ParkTrips Posted January 26, 2006 Author Posted January 26, 2006 I am still in disbelief one of these got built in America! Seeing it in one of these places doesn't suprise me too much, but yea, I doubt we'll see on in a "real" park.
coaster1 Posted January 26, 2006 Posted January 26, 2006 State Fair of Texas is in talks to get one as well as a perm version of the Spring Shot they offer.
socalMAN123 Posted January 26, 2006 Posted January 26, 2006 I agree with Robb, I'm surprised they actually built one of these in the US. Probably has one of the biggest liabilities around. But yet again, it's just a really tall Chance Yo-Yo! ---Brent
Shockwave Posted January 26, 2006 Posted January 26, 2006 I am still in disbelief one of these got built in America! --Robb So am I! I wonder how long it'll last before they have to put a six point harness on the seats? Still, it's another ride to look forward to in March!
Erik Johnson Posted January 26, 2006 Posted January 26, 2006 Oh crap....does this mean I have to experience it as well in March?...
Shockwave Posted January 26, 2006 Posted January 26, 2006 Maybe if we have time. It's not far from Universal right?
Erik Johnson Posted January 26, 2006 Posted January 26, 2006 Maybe if we have time. It's not far from Universal right? Its very close to Universal, yeah there will be time. Leanne is so ready to drag me on this death machine.
Guy T. Koepp Posted January 26, 2006 Posted January 26, 2006 Is this the one that Elissa almost threw up on? Guy "I think thats what you said." Koepp
ParkTrips Posted January 26, 2006 Author Posted January 26, 2006 ^Yes, the ride that Elissa said she'd watch us ride while in Orlando!! Wimp!! ^Still, it'd be great for SFMM. Yea, maybe a full-size one with 36 seats. Its a slow-loader though, I guess it could work as an upcharge. - Joe, who CAN'T WAIT to ride again in March
ebl Posted January 26, 2006 Posted January 26, 2006 I think this ride would be a blast to ride. And I still think it'd be the perfect "Xtreme" ride to add at SFMM. It doesn't take up much room, so they could put it almost anywhere in the park. The top of the mountain would be great! Eric

I love the top of the mountain location for this ride! If Tatsu works as far as giving you that feeling of soaring over the hill. A permanant starflyer would tripple that with the extreme height of the mountain included. Guy "If there is a God. This, a land of the giants and a dueling screaming squirrel will magically appear in 07." Koepp
peteb Posted January 26, 2006 Posted January 26, 2006 I can't see this being much more of a liability than a wave swinger, except this adds the fear factor. I think you would only have to worry about somebody getting to the top, freaking and passing out, slumping over and getting chucked. Anyone know what type of retraint, if any, they use on this. Is it anything more than the chain and clippy between the legs?
viking86 Posted January 26, 2006 Posted January 26, 2006 The one at Prater Park had a seatbelt. And yes, it was freakin amazing. One of my favorite non-coaster rides
haiderodes Posted January 26, 2006 Posted January 26, 2006 I second that motion for one of these at SFMM. I say let's put one in place of the Swashbuckler. They seem to take up roughly the same ground space anyway.

They are so difficient in flats. Guy "Just add rides. Don't take them out." Koepp
ParkTrips Posted January 26, 2006 Author Posted January 26, 2006 It might or might not be possible, but it would be totally insane if they put on on top of the Sky Tower - I mean, its not getting any use right now anyways (Just think, that would be like FIVE HUNDRED feet off the ground!!)
Guy T. Koepp Posted January 26, 2006 Posted January 26, 2006 ^They could put it in Superman Plaza. Call it "Lex Luthors Legacy!" Guy"I love it!" Koepp
SharkTums Posted January 26, 2006 Posted January 26, 2006 FYI, I didn't get sick on it...it just completely terrified me!!! Tiny little chains, a bar, and 60mph 200 feet up!!!!
Shockwave Posted January 26, 2006 Posted January 26, 2006 FYI, I didn't get sick on it...it just completely terrified me!!! Tiny little chains, a bar, and 60mph 200 feet up!!!! Damn, and I was so looking forward to riding that with you! Tom "Oh, this is mildly terrifying!" Hardwick.
SharkTums Posted January 26, 2006 Posted January 26, 2006 No way! You ride with Robb in the double seats, I'm riding alone!!!!
