Movies, Movies, Movies.....

ye gods. . .

my review (from FB):

Nick and I got out of the house today for lunch (Serrano's) and a bad movie.

yes, I have now seen:

"GEO-STORM"

*Horrifically* bad writing (example: early in the film, the guy who's been in charge of the whole satellite system for 3+ years has to have it EXPLAINED to him what a "Geostorm" is. . but then about 1/2 way thru the film, the satellite system starts flashing a nifty "countdown to Geostorm" -- yep, the guy in charge of the whole shebang doesn't know what it is, but there are timed countdowns to the term).

Decent to Questionable acting: the film is set in DC (tho seems awful easy to get from DC to Florida to Space in very quick time), yet one of the main characters - the BROTHER to the other main characters, inexplicably shifts in and out of thick Boston-ish accent ? (Ed Harris (he needed the money?), and a few others fare better. . but not great acting in this turd)

it even fails as Disaster Porn (they destroy Rio, but not only is Christ the Redeemer untouched. . it's NEVER EVEN SHOWN ON SCREEN -- yes, they impact Rio De Jeneiro, and never show it's most famous landmark on screen).

seriously, the special needs lady near us, who clapped and whooped at things on the screen, was more entertaining than the film.

I was expecting crap, but fun crap. . instead got . . . less than crap?

oh well. . we got out of the house, and it was only $2.

The trade screening for Last Jedi was today. Unfortunately I had to finish the schedule for the weekend so it looks like I will need to do a Quality Check screening either tomorrow or Wednesday. I've heard some good and some bad. But in general most were very pleased. (Seemed to have a better overall response than Force Awakens, but I doubt that will translate into dollars with the amount of screen-count competition this year.)

I'm currently counting down the hours before TLJ (17 hours and around 15 minutes). Have to say wasn't expecting this much already on the web around the movie, I don't even want to know right now if it's worth my time but it seems like that is already spoiled. Luckly for me I got to sleep in that time and tomorrow I will be watching TFA before going to my local theater. But I wasn't ready to already be dodging spoilers this early. I will do a small review after seeing it.

^ Never pre-review in your head, something you were planning to see,

based on everything else around you.

But then......there's Geosnooze.....uh, storm.

Even as f-ing LOUD as it wassszzz.

^I'm painfully aware of that hence why I said I don't want to know if it's worth my time. I'm very affected when it comes to that, the past few years I only watch reviews after seeing a movie because at that time I set my mind in stone (I mean I love the Star Wars prequels, been exposed to all the hathe te and while I see where they get if from I still enjoy the movies to this date. Maybe it's because I love Star Wars for the stories not the movies). But yeah right now I'm going to stay off You-Tube till I've seen the film so I can experiance the movie as clean as I can.

I moonlight at a Star Wars bar on the weekends, and our yearly holiday party will be a private screening of TLJ (each year for a new SW movie).

Each employee gets to bring a guest onto a loaded party bus (beer, ciders, etc) on the way to the theater. We sold tickets to our regulars with the option of riding in another party bus with the same set up. We get to watch the movie in our own theater, and then ride back to the bar in the bus (this time filled with liquor). I am trying REALLY hard to avoid spoilers, but it's getting harder every day! HELP ME STAY STRONG!

I've seen it and I thought it was awesome. I tottaly did not expect the movie to go the way it did and was surprised big time. Really look forward to the Rian trilogy now. Also can't wait to see something about episode 9. I'm currently planning a second vieuwing soon.

I have to say, the amount of positive reviews this movie was getting, left me expecting more out of it. Not to say it was bad, but there's a bit I wish I didn't expect (as was my experience with TFA). With that in mind, they could have trimmed some of the fat. It didn't need to be a full 2.5 hours long.

My full review: This is not going to go the way you think.

My advice? Don't come near this thread for a few days.

I can't really go into more details, but I agree on the length. I know this one was technically only 15-20 minutes longer than Force Awakens, but it felt considerably longer because of the movie's pacing.

Having said that, I really did like the movie. I still prefer Force Awakens, but it was a very high quality film and I'd definitely see it again in theaters. Rian definitely introduced some new elements into the movie. I also thought this was the funniest Star Wars movie by far.

We saw The Last Jedi this morning (9:30 AM show while kids were at school) and it is SO GOOD. I loved every minute of it. Whereas Force Awakens felt very much like a remake of A New Hope, The Last Jedi had lots of suprises. It might just be the best one yet.

On another note, this was our first opportunity to go to the new Alamo Drafthouse that just opened in Springfield. It's a San Antonio-based chain of movie theatres that have as their hook that they serve a full meal while in the theatre. It was a great experience, and I recommend it to all Texans or those who live close enough to Texas to have one of these around. My wife had a BLT and I had a buffalo bleu cheese poutine, and both were awesome. Plus they have a full bar, which we didn't participate in since the movie was in the morning, but really cool. We did have the Mudhouse Coffee, which is a local independent coffeehouse. I love that Alamo tries to partner with local suppliers whenever possible. Great experience!

one correction.. Alamo Drafthouse originated right here in Austin

yeah, it's named after the Alamo (about an hour away in San Antonio), but i saw many, many shows at the original Alamo Drafthouse, upstairs near the 4th/Colorado "Warehouse" district in Austin.

that Original location is long gone (it's been several nightclubs at this point), but there are several around town, and the newest locations (with choose your seat online while buying tickets, and the mini-tables shared by every two seats (instead of the long bar table infront of the whole row)) are absolutely amazing.

hint on my fave snack there. . the Buffalo Cauliflower is incredible, but order it with the sauce on the side (and then dip as you eat). The cauliflower will stay crisp the whole way thru, instead of getting soggy quickly.

oh, and hint 2: show up 1/2 hour before your showing. That's when the theaters open, and you can go in, order, and enjoy the 1/2 hour pre-show. . which is clips, commericals, and just weird crap, that's typically themed to what's showing:

(for example, for Justice League, the whole pre-show was old superhero clips, and commercials, and for "It" the whole preshow was about clowns (yes, including McDonald's commercials)

Ok, cool. Austin-based chain then.

Yeah, ours is designed just like that. Mini table for two seats, which we picked out when purchasing tickets. Such a relaxing experience. No worries about getting a good seat, just show up and have a good time. We got there early, and I enjoyed the preshow. They had weird Christmas specials. Nothing classic like Rudolph, no, these were all weird as shit saved from the dustbin of history types. It was surreal and fun.

This just opened, and already it's my new favourite movie place. Not like we get a lot of opportunities for movies. We gave up a long time ago on trying to get a sitter. People just don't want to watch a kid with autism. It sucks, but whatever. So we went in the morning while our free public education system that can't say no to us watched the kids.

Wow, that got dark. Back to fun stuff. When we do have an opportunity for a movie in the theatre (probably Black Panther), it'll be at Alamo Drafthouse. I'll have to check out the cauliflower when we do.

check your local Alamo for special screenings!. . absolutely ask them.

not sure how old your kiddo is, but the Alamo here, offer special "kids" screenings, as well as "autism" screenings (the lights are not quite as low in the theater, and the sound isn't quite as intense), so you could enjoy a screening as a family, surrounded by others who have a similar situation with an autistic child.

The Alamo Drafthouse in Austin is one of the biggest things I miss about living there. There food was so good, and they always had something to match the movie. When they played Snakes on a Plane, they had a snake appetizer, and it was pretty good!

After all the negativity around TLJ I had to watch it again. Was I blinded the first time with the Star Wars brand or did I really love it for the right reason. The verdict I still love it, Not because it's a Star Wars movie but because it made me rethink what I knew. I had the trilogy dotted out in my head then I watched TLJ and it started by flipping the bird to me. I was like: "oh, alright." And thought it would soon get launched back on my vision many because that was what the trailers showed me. Then there was a moment I thought: "Okay it's obvious this is going to happen, they not going to that." but that did happen. At that time my whole concept of 9 was gone, and I loved it and still love it.

Heck these days I think franchises always go on the predictable route. TLJ I thought I had spelled out together with 9 but I was never so wrong while it felt so right. Right now I feel as bumped for 9 as I did before TFA before a trailer was out. Hell I have some idea's but it feels open.

Having said that there are things I raised an eyebrow at. Two scenes I was like: "come on" about but this isn't the first time that happened in Star Wars in my opinion. There was one story arc I felt like it was there and it was fine just not necessary. It was fine how they executed it but really it just did not help this movie.

It's not my favorite Star Wars Movie and it never will be, but it broke something I in hindsight was needing this movie to break.

Awesome! We used to have an independent theatre that did that, but it closed suddenly last summer when the building was bought by a church. We got to watch Sing and Moana and several other films just because of the autism friendly showing. Would be very glad to have that kind of thing back.

  • 1 month later...

I forgot to mention that I got the MoviePass about 5 months ago and it's been AMAZING! For those that don't know, it $9.99 per month, or $89 per year, and you can see up to one 2d movie a day (No 3d, Imax, or special screenings). In the past 5 months, I have seen 29 movies, and only paid $50! Our movies average about $10, so I've saved approximately $240! I rarely get popcorn and drinks, so I still save a ton. Costco has(had?) a special where if you pre-paid for the year, you got access to some online movie website that I never heard of. However, the only warning I have about the MoviePass is that their customer service is absolutely horrendous. Luckily, I've never had to contact them and everything has worked great, but some of my friends had issues and MoviePass was horrendous to deal with. It's been amazing, and it does work at our theaters for the Flashback movies they show, and even for the DFX ATMOS special sound theaters that are a little more money (as long as they're not 3D or IMAX). Anyway, here are some movies I've seen the past month.

Greatest Showman - I loved it! Great soundtrack, great movie!

Shape of Water- Top 5 for WORST movie I've ever seen. So many people like it, but it was so terrible. I couldn't wait for it to end.

Jumanji - It was entertaining. Nothing great, but a nice modern update to the movie.

Paddington 2 - It really liked this one. I didn't see the first one until I was on Netflix and I was pleasantly surprised. The second one was good and pretty funny. There were a few times when I laughed out loud a little.

Darkest Hour - I love historical movies and this one was pretty good. It was a good look at a part of history I never really knew. I know the Winston Churchill during and after the war, but didn't know much about him leading up to the war.

Star Wars - It was good! Yeah, there were some things that could have been better, but it was much better than Episodes 1-3, and it was still a fun movie. I don't understand all the hate it got.

^I have a MoviePass too! It’s been the highlight of my year and I think it’s exactly what we needed to reinvigorate the industry.

I’m absolutely obsessed with The Greatest Showman soundtrack right now. Thought the movie was a little cliche and rushed the first time I saw it, but after knowing what to expect, I loved it the second time.

My favorite award season films this year are Three Billboards, I Tonya, and The Shape of Water. And the biggest surprise of the year for me was Jumanji. Worst film of the year: The Circle.

Just saw Jumanji, and we had a great time with it. A few laugh out louds, for myself.

And Jack Black gets to be The Blonde he was always meant to be, LOL! And I always enjoy it,

when Dwayne Johnson is in some kind of comedy film. I like him this way! Being funny.

Not an EPIC movie, but a fun popcorn film. 8/10
