Photo TR: Knott's, DL, and DCA in 14 Hours + Joshua Tree/LA

Hellloooooo TPR!

My goal for 2018 is to visit a different park each month since I haven't been doing a good job at breaking away from the Cedar Point-Kings Island-Great America mold. January was a success and I've just gotten back from California. I'm happy to report this trip went over much better than anticipated!

Precursor: this trip out to California was originally just going to be to visit Joshua Tree National Park. As the holidays came around I got a Platinum Pass so I started researching Knott's. Easy. On the way to Joshua Tree. Perfect. Fly in Friday 2/16 for Knott's and spend Sat-Mon in Joshua Tree. So I got a night at the KBF hotel + the Karmel shuttle once I land to take me to the airport.

Getting closer to February...

Wait. Disneyland is only a 10 minute drive away. Holy crap. It's also open 'till midnight! Knott's is only open until 8pm! Xcelerator is closed... Maybe I can squeeze in both. It's been 10 years since I've been to Disneyland but I've seen everything, so I won't be missing out on anything rushing through.

So the plan:

Land at 8:30am

9am shuttle to Knott's

Knott's open until 3-4?

DCA for Cars/Guardians

Disneyland for Space Mountain, Indiana Jones, Matterhorn

Sounds do-able? Okay, sweet. But if my flight is delayed that screws everything up. So I wouldn't buy a DL/DCA ticket until I was seated on the plane.

Fast forward to last Thursday. Weather looked good. Flight on time!

*Up at 3:30am Chicago time. Go go go. Seated on the plane. Ticket + MaxPass bought.

*Winds caused us to land at 9, so I was already 30 minutes behind schedule.

*Shuttle was effortless and I was the first dropped off. Amazing. Dropped my bag off at KBF hotel and headed into the park. No issue with the Plat Pass getting in!

Welp, Ghostrider was going to be 90 minutes all day. I waited about 70 minutes? Got a back seat ride.

Ghostrider 1x - It reminded me a lot of Legend (HW) in terms of laterals taking the spotlight over airtime. Absolutely silky smooth ride, but it didn't deliver the airtime I thought was going to be there. I would have loved to have ridden it more than once but it just wasn't in the cards for today. 7/10

I was a bit worried about growing lines for the rest of the attractions since it was already 11am, so I sought out Pony Express.

Pony Express 1x - This just wasn't what I was expecting. I definitely know a bit about each coaster of the park I'm going to visit, but I don't know the specs. Wow this ride was short, but hey it was running and I was able to get on it. It was tucked away in a corner of the park and it took me way too long to find it 5/10

Voyage to the Iron Reef 1x - Right next door and why not. Honestly, I liked this a lot! Even better than the Justice League rides. Why? It was taken at a comfortable pace and the 3D worked better IMO. The set designs were okay, but you're not just rushing through like I feel the JL rides do. Voyage's screens weren't blurry, the plot was simple, and everything worked. The dots were easy to see so aiming wasn't an issue. 8/10

Goddamn Coast Rider 1x - I love Mack rides. I love wild mouse coasters. WHAT'S WITH THE SHIN BARS?! I'm not even tall! The lap bar wouldn't touch my lap because the shin bar was preventing the restraint from coming down properly... I don't get it. It was a painful ride all the way through, but not as bad as Zeus so you're not the lowest coaster on my coasterpoll.com list! 0/10

Holding back tears as I went by Xcelerator, I went to Supreme Scream because drop towers are fantastic. The website led me to believe this S&S tower was a Combo Tower. Not the case, unless the 1 tower that wasn't open was. Regardless, it's a fun downshot S&S tower with views of downtown LA. I rode Supreme Scream 2x during the day.

By now it was getting close to noon and my body has no idea what's happening because I've been up since 3:30am running around. It's time for some Boardwalk BBQ! Shoutout to the user in the KBF thread that posts pictures of their food often.

Only gripe here - I told the woman behind the counter that I wanted to keep a light stomach so I could try all of the amazing food offered at KBF and even though the pulled pork was only offered in 1/2lb portion, she said she could give me 1/4lb (other meats like tri-tip come in 1/4lb option). Well that information wasn't relayed to the cashier and they emphatically told me I was given 1/2lb portion and wouldn't budge. There were no scales around so fine, I don't know who's in the wrong but I'm not going to spend any more time arguing when my clock is ticking.

Boysenberry beer was great! BBQ was solid with a good amount of sauce variety to pair with.

Tip - Boysenberry beer is Shocktop + Boysenberry concentrate mixed. Even if you're not a fruit beer guy (I prefer IPA's/pale ales), it's a good refreshing beer on an 80* day.

Okay great, food is in my system and my body is happy. What's that? I can take my beer wherever? Excellent, let's get on the flume!

Timber Mtn Log Ride 2x - I knew Splash Mountain was going to be closed so I relished my two rides here even more. I love flumes and this was a great flume, right up there with Movie World Australia's, Splash Mtn, Log Chute @ MOA, and others. The mix of animatronics, smells, surprise drops, and acceptable amount of wetness had me laughing and wide-eyed the whole way around. 10/10

Calico Mine Ride 1x - A visual timeless thrill. There was so much going on it was a crime that I was only able to ride it once. Lock me up. 10/10

Silver Bullet 3x - Of all of the coasters open today, this was one that I was looking forward to more with Xcelerator closed. Ghostrider was a let down for me, so that lowered me expectations even further since I've always known this ride to be the start of the decline of forceful B&M coasters. Soooo..

What's up guys? Silver Bullet was GREAT! Sure the lift hill feels steeper than the drop itself, but this invert flowed so well through each inversion, pulled some G's, and had unique elements like the overbanked kicks! Loved this ride and I'll put it right up there with Raptor and Banshee. 9/10

Sierra Sidewinder 1x - Similar to Pony Express, I was let down by the duration of the ride. I was excited about the type of ride since I hadn't been on an outwardfacing spinning coaster, and right as I was starting to have fun the ride was over. 6/10

By now I had noticed that Montezuma's Revenge wasn't showing any signs of life - it never opened while I was there.

Who knew the only launched coaster running at Knott's would be Pony Express..

Jaguar 1x- The last credit of the day was an easy one. It's just a fun ride and these Zierer coasters are growing on me. Orange Streak and Jaguar are such fun rides for everyone. 6/10

By this time it was getting close to when I expected my room to be ready so I grabbed another boysenberry beer, re-rode the flume and Silver Bullet on my way out. My room wasn't ready yet so I grabbed a local IPA at the bar while I charged up and I wasn't even 3 sips into my beer when I got the text that my room was ready!

From here on out every minute counted so I slammed the beer, got the keys, might have eaten chex mix in the shower, and called an Uber to Disneyland around 3:30.

I knew this was going to be closed but it was just so surreal in person. The area isn't even blocked off.

Great report! I have a 12 hour layover in LAX in June, so I'm strongly leaning towards spending that time at Knott's. Hopefully HangTime and the two launched coasters are back up and running.

GhostRider had a 120 minute wait in 2016 on a day when nothing else was more than 20 minutes. That line is painful! I was only able to get one ride, but I thought it was a very good coaster. I really liked the laterals you noted and remember there being some good air too.

Silver Bullet is arguably the worst invert I've been on, but that doesn't mean it's a terrible ride. I do like that funky overbank on an invert and the finale.

Boysenberry beer is worth all the hype. Too bad you didn't get to ride Xcelerator or Montezooma's Revenge, those are great. I agree that Silver Bullet is way underrated. I rode it more than anything else except Ghostrider last time I was there.

Great start to the report, and looking forward to your Disney time next.

Honestly, you went in with too high of expectations on Ghostrider as I did a couple weeks ago. Living in so cal my whole life I was blessed to ride it right when it opened and it was the most insane ride I had ever been on. Over the years it got progressively worse but I still loved it. When I heard of the overlay by gci I thought it was going to back to the insane glory of 1999. I finally got that ride a few weeks ago, in the very back, and sadly just like you was disappointed. I rode today in the front and it was amazing, not like 1999 but an amazing ride. The front made me a believer in Ghostrider again, amazing!!

^^^ & ^^ Silver Bullet totally, happily surprised me, since I hadn't heard/read that much appeal for it. And every

body was chatting about every other coaster at Knott's, including Jaguar! , at the time. I really

enjoyed it a lot, so much so, I know I rode it at least 6 times...or more. So there's one coaster

that Knott's should definitely push more, even now, as old as it is. It's a great invert.

THANKS for what you've posted here! Looking forward (of course), to all you snapped of the Disneyland Resort!

These kind of quick, packed trips are the best! I did Indiana Beach and Cedar Point on the same day not too long ago, followed by Cedar Point and Kings Island (same day again), then Kentucky Kingdom and Holiday World. It was pretty manic, but I covered a lot of ground.

I think if I were to describe Ghost Rider to someone, I'd tell them that it's not particularly extreme or intense, but it's really just a lot of fun. It has a very classic feel to the design, but the second half feels more modern and relentless. To me, it's a ride that I enjoy without having to brace myself in any way. I do think the back seat is the place to be though.

Xcelerator is the really intense ride in the park — one that, no matter how many times I've ridden it, still makes me tense up. It's a shame you didn't get to ride it as I find it more forceful than Dragster, but it's the same principle really.

And I'm with you on Silver Bullet. I don't particularly like B&M inverts (wasn't that enamored with either Raptor or Banshee), but I love this one. I think contention about the drop colors perspectives of the rest of the ride. To me, it's perfectly sequenced and forceful.

Anyhow, cool report! And what did you think of Joshua Tree, by the way? It's a surreal place, and there's a cool little coaster on the way from LA called the Scandia Screamer that's way more intense than it should be.

It's a nice start so far, Knott's Berry Farm looks like a very nice place. I would like to go there one day. Can't wait to see more.

West Coast Bash, which (at this time) usually runs the weekend after Labor Day weekend in September. It has a day at SFMM, and a day at Knott's. When I was there in 2016, it was the Sunday for the Knott's. Much fun. Lots of coaster rides and flat rides. Great food. Great TPR people to (finally) meet up with. And I stayed at the awesome Knott's Hotel, and included a few days' visit at the Disney Resort as well. A great visit back then.

Look out for it. If it happens this year, TPR will announce it, soon enough.

You have to be a member of Club TPR to attend WCB, but it's membership includes

discounts to parks around the world, and the entire list (ongoing) is astounding!

Thanks for the comments everyone! I definitely plan on going back to Knott's this year to pick up rides on Xcelerator and Hangtime. The park was beautiful and a lot more filled in with plants/trees/themeing than I anticipated. It's a great park and I feel like I need to see Scary Farm to truly appreciate the fact that they can pack even moooooooore attractions into the park!

Back at it for part 2!

Recharging and cleaning up, I got a $7 Uber from KBF Hotel over to Disneyland and it didn't take long at all. There is a ride share location at the opposite end of Downtown Disney, but I bet there's a spot at the Downtown Disney end as well.

It was about 5PM, I had my ticket pulled up, and I planned on going into DCA first so I could hit Guardians and Cars. The fact that I was standing in the plaza between the parks on a beautiful 80* day in February was so surreal. I couldn't believe I was able to pull this off and everything worked out so perfectly!

But wow, there are a LOT OF PEOPLE HERE. Taking my first look at the opportunity for Fast Pass, nothing was available except for Indiana Jones at 9:10PM. Perfect, that gives me plenty of time to run between both parks and I have full confidence that I can get on Cars + Guardians in that 4 hours.

I booked it left towards Guardians and my heart skipped a beat upon seeing 75 minutes. WAIT. There are single rider lines everywhere, maybe I can cut this wait time in half! No single rider line. No FP available. Crap. Okay, let's put a pin in this and go check out Cars. It was definitely a different visit than my 2008 visit since Parad... Pixar Pier was totally closed this time around. I went by Grizzly River and was tempted to ride but I wasn't going to risk getting hit with a wall of water as the sun was going around.

Rounding the corner to Cars, again I was stopped in my tracks by nearly full queues. It was an hour for single rider and 75 minutes for the regular queue. FOOLISHLY I got in line without an adult beverage! I buddied up with a group in front of me who had margaritas, glowing drinks, and beer and before I realized my mistake we were 15 minutes in line and I wasn't about to abandon ship for drinks. The line moved fairly quickly and I don't believe I ended waiting the posted time.

Great looking queue and the whole rock work was a great precursor for my Joshua Tree stay - seriously it looked just like the rock structures out there! Of course Disney did their homework and made the ride look as authentic as possible. Boarding the car, I was surprised by the roar of the 'engine' when we took off. It totally caught me by surprise and got the adrenaline going. I've never seen the Cars movie, I just know Owen Wilson and Larry the Cable (or Pepto Bismol) Guy are voices. The leisurely ride eventually turned into the race where you zip around the rock work. It was such a *fun* ride! Don't expect plaster-you-to-your-seat launches or airtime, it's just a fun fun fun ride. 10/10

All amped up off the winning race, I was escorted over to get a margarita at Rita's Baja Blenders for a delicious frozen marg. At this time the sun was setting and the neon lights were coming alive - frick this park looks great at night. Carsland is such a cool spot I totally forgot about how little I cared about my 0% interest in the IP/movie. I feel like I'd have the same feeling at Potterland - I don't really care/have an affinity for the IP but damn this space is a wow factor.

Okay, time for Guardians! Screw the wait times, let's just go ride it.

...

..

.

It's at nearly an hour and a half. I was totally ready to get in line but I'd never seen a queue that fill at a Disney park before. I figured I'd try my luck again and asked a cast member to look at my app to see if I was missing anything - are there FP's available? Will there be? I've got until close to ride..will I have better luck later? Mollie @ Guardians was a saint and told me what she would do and gave me play by play...with a fast pass! I couldn't believe it. She saved me two hours. I re-evaluated my evening with a FP and got into Guardians.

Honestly, when I first heard about the Tower of Terror -> Guardians I felt a little sick. It didn't feel right. I mean, I'm a Marvel guy and I love both of the Guardians movies.

All of those feelings washed away when I stepped foot in the queue. It looked great, the pre-show was quick and to the point, and if I miss anything it's the spooky Tower of Terror bellhops. They really made the attraction! I think the cast members inside did a good job with the new roles, but they just weren't as memorable as the bellhops I've encountered.

I'm a weird guy that likes DCA's tower just as much if not more than the Orlando version! I don't know maybe since I only visit a Disneypark every 5+ years the experience seems brand new to me every time. The ride has everyone giggling from start to finish. The ups and downs are friggin' epic. I love the airtime and the unpredictability makes it arguably the best drop tower experience out there.

Okay, now I'm really buzzing after that ride. Well..not yet. Adamant about getting another drink before I head over to Disneyland, I got suggested to try this glowing blue drink that tasted like every fruit in the world. It was back by the Monster's Inc dark ride. Sweet. DCA accomplished. ONTO Disneyland!!!

Thinking about how unsafe I felt around the dented supports at Knott's Berry Farm while riding a drop tower with only seat belts.

Great report so far, I always enjoy reading reports from people that aren't local, it gives interesting perspectives on these California parks!

By the way, holy crap you work at Adult Swim? It's very possible I'm a tad too young for it, but The Eric Andre Show is my favorite TV show atm, just saying. That Jimmy Kimmel interview is legendary. Also, if you could put a good word in to reboot Loiter Squad and Xavier Renegade Angel I'd be forever in your debt. Please and thank you.

Great report! I really need to get over to the West Coast at some point. Knott's looks like an amazing park even without Xcelerator, and Disney is... well, Disney.

I LOVE IT! Disney's California Adventure is such a great park! Personally, I do favor the original Tower of Terror overlay. Guardians of Galaxy seems fun and have so much to offer, but nothing can beat the "Welcome to the Hollywood Tower Hotel" feel. I'm getting chills just thinking about it. LOL. Keep up the great photos!

It's time to bounce over to Disneyland!

Since I saved some time, I figured I'd explore downtown Disney and get a bite to eat since my FP for Indiana Jones was at 9:10p. It was pretty packed but I was able to snag a seat at the bar @ La Brea! https://disneyland.disney.go.com/dining/downtown-disney-district/la-brea-bakery-cafe/menus/ I ended up passing on food and just sticking with beer, haha.

They had a great selection of beer on tap and the bartender was happy to charge my phone while I had a few beers and chat it up. The Racer 5 IPA is friggin' tasty, one of the best west coast IPA's IMO. After some time to sit down and relax for a bit, I couldn't tame my excitement to get on Space Mountain. I figured I'd go check it out first since there was a single rider line and maybe I could get lucky with a ride or two before Indiana Jones.

Tomorrowland at night is spectacular and I was elated to see that the single rider line was able to get me on in just 5-15 minutes. The regular line was over an hour so I found my way down to a group of fellow singles and we were quickly forwarded down into the station where I was lucky to score a front seat ride! This is my favorite Space Mountain. The James Bond-In-Space music that blasts throughout the whole ride is just so perfect and honestly I did not remember it being as dark as it was in the coaster section! I could barely see anything but the specs of white floating around. Space Mountain is just pure fun for everyone; it's so fast paced! Pop of airtime, turn, pop of air, turn, helix, pop, repeat. I was really buzzin' as I came off the ride!

I had been up since 3:30am, had walked over 10 miles, crossed off all possible coasters at Knott's, got one the two new (for me) attractions at DCA, and checked off my favorite Disney coaster WAY SOONER than I had imagined. The delicious mix of drinks along the way was also adding fuel to my fire, too I still had another 30-40 minutes until my Indiana Jones reservation, so I just re-rode Space Mountain a couple more times. The insanely efficient load/unload process is amazing to watch/experience in person, and the lift up to the changing/flashing light tunnel before the main lift never fails to get me hyped up. I was definitely making a case for happiest person in Disneyland last Friday, haha

Okay, time for Indiana Jones! At this point, it was looking very likely that I'd be able to get on IJ then skip across to DCA for one more ride on Cars + Guardians of the Galaxy if everything worked out right.

The queue for Indiana Jones is as legendary as the ride itself and I *love* the cheezy ride instruction video before you get to the platform. We boarded the car and set off on the journey. I had seen that IJ was down when I first checked the map upon arriving on Disney grounds, so I think it was still having issues on my ride. There wasn't any fire, most of the sets were very hard to see, which made it a very lackluster ride knowing what it's like at 100%. Seriously, I could barely see the snakes, the bridge didn't have any fire or lava beneath it, and it just made the effects seem random. It's still an amazing ride and I'm happy I was able to get on it, but I didn't return for another ride when I probably could have.

Time for the big time crunch. It's 9:30. DCA closes at 11pm. I jogged out of Disneyland and over to DCA straight to Cars and grabbed a beer before getting in the single rider line. It wasn't as long as it was before, so I was able to get on and off by 10:15. I went straight over to Guardians after that and got one more ride before going back to Disneyland for a couple more rides on Space Mountain before it was time for the park to close.

I got an uber and was home by 12:45pm. I had nearly been up 24 hours straight. I was drunk at this point But wow. I had walked/jogged 16 miles throughout the day, and in the end:

Knott's - 10:30am~3pm

Ghostrider, Iron Reef, Pony, Coast Rider, Sierra, Jaguar, Mine Ride all 1x

Supreme Scream, Log Ride, Boysenberry Beer 2x

Silver Bullet 3x

Unplanned missed coaster: Montezuma

Disneyland/DCA - 5pm~12am

Cars, Guardians both 2x

Indiana Jones 1x

Space Mountain 5x

Mystery Glowing Blue Drink, Margarita both 1x

Racer 5 IPA 2x

Sorry Big Thunder and Matterhorn! Splash Mountain was closed for refurbishment otherwise I would have been all about that action, boss.

I'll have bonus updates of Joshua Tree and LA/Santa Monica Pier later! I couldn't have accomplished what I did without the direction and help of a handful of stellar cast members. Before I went over to Disneyland for the first time I wanted to stop at Guest Services to tell them about Mollie and Garcia that helped me out.....but there was a massive line! UGH. Thankfully when I came back to DCA for one more ride on Cars/Guardians and went back over to Disneyland it was late and there were only 2-3 people in line so I was able to tell them about how they made my day and helped me save time.

If you've got the stamina, the time, and a ticket, you can easily hit up your favorites in a limited time! I really didn't have any time to plan/reserve FP in advanced due to the improvisational manner of this trip - this was probably the lest effective way to do Knott's / Disneyland / DCA The only thing I would have done differently is I should have eaten something for dinner. I was so caught up running around I didn't eat anything at DL - I was on the hunt for the red corndog cart but couldn't find it. I always turn up my nose to overpriced theme park food but end up spending on $12 drinks so I'm a dingus, haha.

I took way more snapchats/videos than pictures now that I'm going through my gallery - I really thought I had taken more pictures, sorry for the lack of content! I'm posting some TBT snaps since I was there a week ago - feel free to add me: photoboothezizi

Thanks for reading everyone!
