A new extreme in roller coaster excitement is coming to Oaks Amusement Park during the spring of 2018! The ride features a 72' vertical lift, past-vertical initial drop, 97° loop, an Immelman turn, heartline roll, 45 mph maximum speed, 1,050' track, and a 48" minimum height.

All the statistics listed match up perfectly with the 320 model (Hydrus at Casino Pier) https://rcdb.com/14231.htm

Wow, this is definitely news! And close, too!

But... the naming contest is USA entries only, allowed.

Well, I hope it gets a great name, all the same.

P.S. I think I've discovered a 2018 trip to take, that won't cost me $$$$$$!

Hopefully with Portland's growth and the available land that Oak's can start to grow into a solid theme park with new rides over the next 10 years. Not much in competition in the NW. I have always felt it's an untapped market. The old Janzten beach park was always a big draw back in the day.

^^It will! Details are scattered in the comments on this FB post, which contains the same information found in the OP/naming contest.

Thoughts...I'm so, so glad this is what the addition turned out to be! Was up last night reading reviews of Hydrus to make sure I'm in for a pleasant surprise, and it sounds like that'll be the case. Super glad they went with lap bars, whether that's what Gerstlauer is currently pushing or purely a park-by-park decision.

My #1 guess was an El Loco or Eurofighter, but I'd steeled myself for disappointment as is only appropriate for a small, carnival-style park that's replacing its Pinfari looper. I enjoy Eurofighters, so I'm

YES!

I know this is only a Eurofighter, but this announcement actually makes me more excited than some of the larger coasters being announced, mainly because it is great to see a coaster-starved region of the country finally see some attention. I go to Portland all the time. I love the city, but I have always wished that it had a full size amusement park. I am glad to see somewhat of a change to that status. I am looking forward to riding this next time I go there!

Lots of awesome announcements on National Rollercoaster Day, but this is the most surprising one. It's a big move for Oaks and will put Oregon on the rollercoaster map. Next time I visit Portland I'll definitely swing by Oaks if its open.

Asking for this is probably a bit much: Oaks Park is run by a nonprofit organization. Which, I should note, is what a lot of aging park owners should do if they don't want their park to become condos or a vacant lot.

If you include Canada, the north to south list goes something like this...

Playland(PNE)

Pyuallup Fair (when it's open)

Wild Waves

Oaks

Enchanted Forest

...and that's it. Then it's several hundred miles south, to N.California and the parks, there.

If Oaks is starting to ramp up it's ride collection in the next several years, this could be a

sort of re-birth for both it and Playland, as PL is (hoping) to expand it's park footprint, too.

This area of the States (and BC) could become "sleeper hits" for theme parks, in the years ahead.

Zip, Oaks Park, Portland, OR

In 1927, Two years after Edward Bollinger purchased Oaks, a new type of ride was introduced to the park. The coaster, referred to as Zip ... was a notorious coaster known as a "rib tickler" that had a tendency to crush riders ribs. This was a Harry Traver design that ended up being a compact version similar to the other well known Cyclones he designed such as the Crystal Beach Cyclone and the Revere Beach Lightning. Though Zip was a true thriller for daring fans, it had a short life span due to maintenance and insurance costs. The coaster was extremely rough and intense and lasted for only seven years, 1927-1934.

and just because...R.I.P. SEASIDE Park on the Oregon Coastline.

Home of my Very First (original) Mad Mouse - Ever!

Used to be a small active seaside amusement center. With both a merry-go-round AND

a Bumper Cars rides along the sidewalk store fronts! In between the shops, etc.

A very cool seaside resort, for it's time.

Gayway Park, Seaside, OR

There was also a "Gayway Park" in Seattle ... http://www.rollercoastersofthepacificnw.com/pages/galaxy.html

Not as fun fact: Seaside is likely to be the worst place to be on the Oregon coast during the next Cascadia Subduction Zone tsunami.

Fun fact: Seaside is the best/only good coastal town in Oregon for enthusiasts, with its Lusse Auto Skooters, classic Tilt-a-Whirl, Fascination parlor, and small fiberglass carousel.

As a portlander, this came as a huge shock! This is a great choice for a small plot of land at a park run by a non-profit. I'm old enough to remember being excited when they installed the Pinfari eons ago.

In my spare time I like to draw out ways to turn Oaks into the Grona Lund of the PNW. One can dream, but this is a big step forward for the sleepy park.
