Love me some Knoebels. I have been pondering the idea of going down for the PPP and staying at the campground next door if Michael is up for it - that invite from TPR is looking VERY tempting! :b

^ Thanks everybody! Get set for more Knoebels awesomeness!

Day 7: Um…Free? As in No Money At All?

My second day at Knoebels I decided not to buy an all day wristband, instead spending the majority of the day on museums, shops, and other such things. It was really relaxing as I ate breakfast with not a care as to when Knoebels would be opening. Usually I try to dash into a park to take advantage of those early hours, so to take my time at a park opening was quite the luxury.

An SDC connection! What a wonderful find!

The first stop after breakfast was the Haunted Mansion. I had saved this for this day since it requires a ticket even if you have a wristband. This ride was so cool, absolutely the best old school dark ride I’ve ever been on. It’s creepy as hell, and there’s so much to look at. Wow, really great.

Next up was the Carousel Museum. They had a good number of artifacts, some of which have been restored beautifully. It’s only one room, but it’s really enjoyable. Take the time to step in here when you visit Knoebels.

I then went to the Mining Museum and Knoebels History Museum, both housed in the building next to Black Diamond. Very cool stuff to be found in both.

I wanted to see the eagles behind Black Diamond, because if there are animals in a park, I will go see them. They were hanging out in the shade, because they’re smart like that. I took note that there was a keeper chat later in the day and made plans to come back.

Lunch was at Cesari’s. I had a slice of cheese, and it wasn’t very good. Quite overcooked, and the slice didn’t fold so much as crumble. Best pizza ever, I think not.

20170809_123445.jpg

Since the pizza was inedible, I instead got some pierogis. Ah, that’s the stuff! Just as good as the previous day.

I wandered around a bit looking through shops. It was kind of hard to pick out souvenir shirts, since it was near the end of the summer season and a lot of designs had only size small. I’m happy with the ones I got though.

Finally time for the keeper chat...and…they didn’t do anything with the eagles at all. Just this woman came out and said there are some eagles behind her, and do you have questions? One person did, and she didn’t know the answer. Like at all. And everyone started to leave, including me. WTF, Knoebels? You are so awesome in literally every other way. Get your eagle sh*t together.

All right, now it’s time for Fascination! I’ve done the one at Indiana Beach, and this one is similar, but the prizes require more tickets. I was able to bring home a bunch of crap from Indiana Beach, but here I didn’t get enough for anything. So I have some souvenir Fascination tickets instead!

I decided to give Cesari’s pizza another try, on the off chance that it was just one bad slice. I got the Sicilian this time, and it was great! This must be what people are raving about! I will attest that Cesari’s is awesome when it’s not burnt.

After that, it was about 5:00 and time to purchase my evening wristband! I went first to Flying Turns, then Impulse. Twice around on the log flume brought me to around 7:30, and it was time to spend the last 2 ½ hours of the day riding Phoenix non-stop.

Knoebels is completely unlike any other park I’ve ever been to, in the most awesome ways imaginable. For one, it’s super cheap. Well, not cheap exactly for me, when it requires a flight and rental car, but once you get there, you pay very little for what you get. The value for the money is astronomical compared to other parks. Second, there is a lot to do, and it’s all great. The rides are great, the museums are great, the shops are great, Fascination is great. There’s not a dud anywhere. Operations are spectacular (as they’re incentivized to keep the lines moving with a pay-per-ride model), the people are friendly, and the whole park just has this small town feel to it that I love. Knoebels rocketed to one of my favourite parks anywhere and was absolutely the best park on my trip, even considering the lofty heights of my Hersheypark visit. This place is wonderful, and I totally get why everyone has raved so much about it. It deserves all the praise it gets and more.

That first slice of Cesari's looks nasty...like it had sat around for a while.

When we got ours, it not only folded, but you had to eat it with a knife and fork because it was so gooey with cheese. Certainly not the greatest pizza on earth, but for amusement park food, not too shabby.

I will definitely be heading for that pierogi shack next time though!!

You know who else eats pizza with a knife and fork....

Don't be a dick like that guy. Don't use a fork.

That's probably why I loved Storm Runner so much and it was my favorite at Hersheypark. The best elements of both Maverick and Xcelerator combined into one coaster.

Nice TR through PA. Back in 2014, on my drive from Philly to Harrisburg I also stopped at Valley Forge and really liked the place, being both scenic and historic. Hershey and Knoebels are my favorite parks that I've been to in the NE and along with Kennywood makes a really nice trio of parks in PA (although Kennywood is far away from the others). When I went to Knoebels and saw a glimpse of the campground I said to myself if I lived within an 8 hours driving distance of here I'd camp here. We have a lot of great campgrounds in the West but nothing like this with a homegrown amusement park attached to it. I also had a problem with the Cesari's Pizza in 2016 (not 2014 though) as one of my slices (I had two different types) was cold in the center and they had to put it back in the oven twice before it was good. With so many food choices in Knoebels, I would probably pick something different on my next visit there.
