In Robb's in-depth coverage of IAAPA, I saw that S&S is contracted to work on Legoland Malaysia. This was announced a while back but we have not discussed it on TPR yet. Here are a couple of articles.

http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/southeastasia/view/1068540/1/.html

NUSAJAYA, Malaysia : Asia's first Legoland targets to attract 1.5 million visitors when it opens its doors at the end of 2012.

Located in Nusa Cermelang industrial park, within the Iskandar New Economic Region, the theme park will boast the tallest lego model in the world.

The backgrounds of the 22 young Malaysians - pioneer model builders for Legoland Malaysia - are diverse, coming from engineering, architecture, and fine arts.

They beat over 800 other job seekers at a recent hiring contest.

In the first round, contestants were given 25 minutes to copy a model of a seahorse.

"It was not difficult to find the people. We were amazed. What we really looking for is creativity obviously, but more so it's teamwork, it's the passion and the attitude that the people bring in to their role. That's what we're really looking for," said Tim Burnell, Production Director, Merlin Entertainment.

25-year-old Mohd Firdaus was among the top six, who've returned from a short stint at the mother of all Legolands, in Billund, Denmark.

It's a dream come true for the mechanical engineer, who had his first lego set when he was four.

Over 30 million bricks will go towards making 15,000 models that will be scattered across the 26-hectare theme park.

Being the first in Asia, it will feature many iconic buildings and structures familiar to the region, and in particular to Malaysia.

Work is also in progress to build the tallest model in mini land, but the exact details are still under wraps.

Already its developer, Iskandar investment, is excited. The CEO said when Legoland Malaysia is ready in 2012, it will offer a different experience from other theme parks, including Universal Studios in neighbouring Singapore.

"It would not be seen in competition with attractions that Singapore has, (which) deal with young adults-type of attractions. This is more family-based," said Arlida Ariff, President/CEO of Iskandar Investment Berhad.

"It inspires people with a toy, and when they go away, they can build what they like with them (lego bricks). It's a lot more interactive; there will be lego in queue lines and kids can play with it as they go along," said Burnell. - CNA

Legoland Malaysia taking shape, brick by brick

Sun, Aug 29, 2010

New Straits Times

By Syed Umar Ariff

WOULD you like to build Lego models for a living? Many people, especially the young-at-heart, would consider this a dream job, possibly even better than food-tasting or being the caretaker of an island paradise.

Which was why, when Legoland Malaysia announced recently that it was hiring 22 local Lego model builders, more than 1,000 candidates turned up to apply for the job.

But only a few had an idea what the job was all about - that, as a model builder, they would have to create over 15,000 Lego models for Legoland Malaysia. They would also be Asia's pioneer batch of Legoland model builders.

Some of the candidates who turned up were those with engineering, chemistry and architecture backgrounds.

They were taken aback when the job "interview" was actually in the form of a competition. They had to undergo three phases of model-making challenges to gauge their creativity, technical and building skills.

"Well, the main point here is for everyone to have fun. But the truth is, it is not easy," said Merlin Entertainments production director Tim Burnell when met during one of the interviews.

The six successful candidates from the first hiring competition attended a 10-week overseas training programme at Legoland California and Legoland Billlund.

There, they learned how to build models designed to meet the highest international quality and safety standards.

As of now, they are working to build Lego replicas of national and state landmarks for Legoland Malaysia at its Model Building Centre at Nusa Cemerlang Industrial Park in Nusajaya, Johor.

The prowess and skills exhibited by our own model builders is extraordinary. The detailed design of the Sultan Ibrahim Building for example, was made up completely by Lego blocks.

Even Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman was impressed by the models built by the local talents.

"To see the landmarks of Johor Baru being replicated is breathtaking," he said.

One of the model builders, former receptionist Noor Amyee Suratman never thought that her hobby would one day become her "real job".

"I was a receptionist-cum-administrative clerk at a construction company. That is certainly a far cry from my current job," said the photography and creative imaging graduate from Johor Baru.

As for 30-year-old Beijing Central Academy of Fine Arts graduate Tan Yi Chuan, his skills as a sculptor proved to be useful as a Lego model builder.

"I can create sculptures from metal, wood and even bronze and playing with Lego bricks has always been my pastime.

"Now, I am working in my dream job as I get to sculpt as well as play with Lego," he said.

I really wish some major park chain would make it's way into the Philippines. When I was there, Star City was pretty crowded, I can just imagine what a halfway decent park would pull in.

I don't think that will happen soon while the amount of phillippinos that are whelty enough to be able to pay the entrace fee. The phillippines don't attract a lot of tourist that are into themeparks eighter. Even a small decent park like Enchanted Kingdom seems not able to get enough visitors in to be very profitable. The Iskandar aria is in between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur; these are big whelty cities with enough potential visitors for Legoland Malaysia.

http://www.nst.com.my/streets/johor/legoland-park-to-offer-seven-themed-areas-1.16781

LEGOLAND Malaysia is coming together, block by block. From its agreement signing ceremony between Iskandar Investment Bhd and Merlin Entertainments in December 2008 to its groundbreaking ceremony a year later, the 31ha theme park, built to the tune of RM720 million, recently saw the unveiling of the RM13 million steelworks for its roller coaster. When completed, the roller coaster is going to be one of the main attractions of the theme park, which is targeted to pull in approximately one million visitors during the first year of operation.

The entire project is currently 40 per cent complete, according to IDR Resorts Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Muhammad Zainal Ashikin Muhammad Rejab who said that all construction work and manpower recruitment are on schedule for next December's opening.

IDR Resorts, a member company of Iskandar Investment Bhd, which is developing the project with Merlin, is confident the theme park, when completed will offer fun and adventure for the whole family, especially those with young children.

The theme park will be home to 40 rides, with more attractions to be added within the next 10 to 15 years. It will be divided into seven themed areas, each designed for participants of all ages to explore, have fun and learn from the experience. The theme areas are "The Beginning", "Lego City", "Miniland", "Land of Adventure", "Imagination", "Lego Kingdom" and "Lego Technic".

"The Beginning" is the entrance area where the adventure begins. There will be a Big Shop located here to offer the largest selection of Lego toys.

"Lego City" is where kids get to captain a boat and check out the junior driving academy where they will get to drive their own Legoland cars.

There is also the Rescue Academy, where the entire family can race in Lego fire trucks to hose down a building which is "in flames".

Another attraction will be "Miniland", where millions of Lego bricks will be used to build replicas of some of the most prominent landmarks such as the Petronas Twin Towers; the Angkor Wat (Cambodia), the Merlion (Singapore) and Taj Mahal (India), among others.

At the "Land of Adventure", visitors will get to journey through forgotten cities' ancient temple ruins to recover a pharaoh's stolen treasure while Dino Island will test the courage of the bravest families.

"Lego Kingdom" is where one will get to protect their kingdom by conquering the dragon and romp through the hideaways and do battle in the Royal Joust.

"Imagination" is the perfect haunt for a true Lego fan as everyone in the family can build and play with Lego bricks. Here, one can find the Kid Power Towers where one can climb up and enjoy a view from the top before dropping to the ground. One can pull oneself up again, thus proving that there are no limits to one's imagination.

Meanwhile, the "Lego Technic" is where one can find the test track which offers one a thrilling ride on the roller coaster. While here, visitors may check out Aquazone Wave Racers where one can try the power ski and dodge water blasts.

Creation of the 15,000 Legoland model structures at the Model Building Centre in the Nusa Cemerlang Industrial Park is also progressing smoothly.

Legoland Malaysia is the first Legoland in Asia and the sixth in the world. Other Legoland are found in Denmark; United Kingdom; Germany; Florida and California, both in the United States. In the pipelines are plans to bring Legoland to South Korea, Australia and Japan.

IDR Resorts is now offering early annual passes at discounted rates on its website. They are priced at RM195 for adults and RM150 (child). The normal price for the annual pass is RM275 for adults and RM210 (child). The pre-opening annual passes will be valid until end of 2013.The gate prices for MyKad holders are RM140 for adults and RM110 (child), with a RM30 rebate for both.

“Everyone in Germany owns LEGO sets because it was the first international market LEGO started in. I still play with the LEGO bricks my parents bought me whenever I go back to Germany,” said Siegfried Boerst, general manager of LEGOLAND Malaysia. Whenever he talks about LEGO or LEGOLAND, his eyes light up like a child’s. This affable German moved to Malaysia 18 months ago to build the first ever LEGOLAND in Asia in Iskandar Johor, the southern development corridor. Due to open the fourth quarter of this year, the theme park has already created a buzz among Malaysians and Singaporeans alike with over 10,000 pre-order annual passes sold to date. Siegfried Boerst, general manager of LEGOLAND Malaysia, enjoys making every kid’s dream come true.

Malaysians make up to 60 per cent of the pre-order annual passes sold while Singaporeans make up the rest. “Malaysia is such a nice country. We were looking for quite awhile for a new LEGOLAND to open outside of Europe and America, then we met up with people from Iskandar Malaysia. The plans for it to be a tourist destination with entertainment facilities, indoor attractions and resort destination fit our criteria. We also have support financially and the back-up of local authorities,” said Boerst as he guided a group of us journalists around the 76-acre construction site.

Consisting of seven themed areas and 40 over rides and attractions, LEGOLAND Malaysia will feature attractions unique to this region such as the boat ride in LEGO City where children can steer a boat on their own. Boerst said that LEGOLAND Malaysia is built to suit the local climate and needs, with more roofs, about 3,500 trees, prayer rooms and even local food alongside international cuisine.

One of the most popular attractions of other LEGOLANDs around the world has always been Miniland, where millions of LEGO bricks form iconic landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower, the Egyptian Pyramids and more. You can expect Malaysia’s very own Petronas Twin Towers, Singapore’s Merlion, Cambodia’s Angkor Wat and India’s Taj Mahal in LEGOLAND Malaysia. Boerst said 50 million LEGO bricks can be found in LEGOLAND Malaysia and half of the bricks go to Miniland. Visitors will find 15,000 types of LEGO structures all over the theme park.

Another attraction to look out for is the Dragon Coaster which runs through the castle at LEGO Kingdom. This ride runs at 60 kilometres per hour and passengers get to experience the “torture chamber”, watch the LEGO royal family dining, and see the precious treasure guarded by the Dragon. “My daughter couldn’t wait till she was old enough to ride on the Dragon Coaster and once she was old enough, I brought her on the ride. It’s her favourite and that day, we went on it about three times,” he said with a laugh. The Dragon Coaster is one out of the three roller coaster rides in LEGOLAND Malaysia, with a smaller one within LEGO Kingdom and another one at LEGO Technic.

“There will also be things inside the park for children to discover. For example, they may sit down on a bench and realise that there is a LEGOMAN sitting beside them or there will be a huge giraffe made out of LEGO bricks about five metres high,” said Boerst.

LEGOLAND Malaysia has a capacity of 15,000 visitors at one time and to avoid long queues, each attraction will show a waiting time. Loose LEGO bricks will also be placed around the queue area so that children can occupy themselves while waiting.

Boerst said it will definitely take more than a day to enjoy all the rides and if you want a bird’s eye view of the whole theme park, you can go up on the Observation Tower that stands 60 metres high. It seats a maximum of 50 people and the core is propelled slowly 360 degrees so that visitors can enjoy the breathtaking view all around. It takes about 50 seconds to reach to the top.

LEGOLAND Malaysia will also feature the biggest LEGO shop in the region with a “Include Entry Archway”, “The Big Shop”, and “Pick a Brick.” “Pick a Brick” is something like pick and mix candies, except that it is LEGO bricks instead and it is priced by the total weight.

At LEGO City, children can obtain a “driver’s license” at the Driving School. Parents are invited to join in the fun by putting out a “fire” in LEGO fire trucks. The attractions and rides at LEGOLAND are very interactive and fun, for example; at the Aquazone Wave Racers, other families can join in the excitement and spray water at you.

“We are expecting a million visitors in the first year,” said Boerst. The company in charge of opening LEGOLAND Malaysia, Merlin Entertainment, has opened 78 attractions successfully and Boerst feels that LEGOLAND Malaysia will be able to draw crowds from this region.

There are plans for a water park next year and a hotel in 2014. Boerst spent the last 20 years building theme parks and he enjoys every bit of it.

“I really enjoy setting up theme parks. It may get stressful at times but once you get involved with something like that, you become part of it and attached to it. When I visit the theme parks I helped build, I feel a sense of belonging there,” said Boerst. Looking at Boerst, he looks like a kid at heart who loved LEGO since his first brick and was lucky enough to make this passion part of his job.

Asia’s first Legoland Hotel is to open in Malaysia in 2014 next to a theme park dedicated to the popular children’s building bricks, the developers said today.

Groundwork for the hotel in southern Johor state - the world’s fourth Legoland hotel - began last month, developer Merlin Entertainments Groups and LL Themed Hotel said in a statement. The hotel will be constructed out of more conventional building materials and will be built next to the Legoland theme park, which is due to open at the end of this year.

The developers said they were hoping to attract local and international travelers. “It will bring Lego to life with imaginative theming and a host of child-friendly features from low counters in the restaurant to treasure chests full of Lego in the bedrooms,” the statement said.

When completed, Legoland Malaysia will be the sixth of its kind in the world after those in Denmark, Britain, California, Florida and Germany.

The 31-hectare park, which will offer 40 rides, shows and displays featuring the Danish toy bricks, will be one of the main attractions of Iskandar Malaysia - a dedicated economic development zone bordering Singapore. About 30 million Lego bricks will be used in attractions at the theme park.

Other Legoland Hotels are located in Denmark and Britain, and a third will open in California in 2013.

Asia's first Legoland is set to open for business on Sept 15.

Legoland Malaysia General Manager Siegfried Boerst said the RM700 million theme park on a 76-acre land in Iskandar Malaysia, Johor, was 75 per cent complete. He said that last month, the contractors began work on theming the park, and next month they would begin installing the 50 million Lego bricks and models. "I'm pleased to announce that due to the hardwork of all our contractors, we will now be opening the park ahead of schedule by a number of months," he told reporters here today.

Legoland Malaysia here is the sixth Legoland theme park in the world and the first in Asia. The park, with seven special themes namely Lego kingdom, imagination, land of adventure, lego technic, the beginning, lego city and miniland, is especially designed for families with children from two to 12 years of age.

Boerst said over 35,000 annual passes had been sold and 60 per cent of the buyers were Malaysians. The annual passes, priced at RM195 per adult and RM150 per child, are valid until end of 2013. "The official park single-day tickets will go on sale online later this month and these tickets will be priced at a special introductory offer of RM96 for adults and RM70 for kids," he said.

Legoland Malaysia expects to attract one million visitors in its first year of operation.

Tickets are available online through the AirAsia RedTix and Legoland Malaysia websites. Boerst said Legoland Malaysia was in talks with local tour operators to provide packages for visitors from the Klang Valley.

"We hope to provide more transportation for our visitors here and there are plans to set a up new route with the local authority for buses to be here," he said.

On accommodation, he said, Merlin Entertainments Group had signed a management agreement with LL Themed Hotel Sdn Bhd to develop and build the Legoland Hotel.

The Legoland Hotel is expected to be ready in 2014.

Meantime, Legoland Malaysia is in talks with hotel operators in Johor to provide shuttle buses from their hotels to the park. "We are in discussion with the hoteliers and we hope they can work together with us," he said.

Legoland Malaysia will feature more than 40 interactive rides, shows and attractions when it opens.

Other Legoland theme parks across the world are in Denmark, the United Kingdom, Germany and Florida and California in the USA.

It is the second after Legoland Billund park, Denmark, to house the Observation Tower, where visitors are lifted up 41 metres for an excellent view of the Legoland theme park as the tower revolves to make a complete circle in 50 seconds.
