Six Flags Great Adventure (SFGAdv) Discussion Thread

Recommended Posts

We ended up closing the night out on El Toro, around 5:30, it was dark already, I was pretty pleased to get one last night ride on The Bull, and even more pleased to see Ryan was on loading attendant! We met a fellow enthusiast (that also happens to live in Philly!) while waiting for our first lap, had a quick chat with Ryan then headed around for #4 of the day. Ryan joined us for our last ride of the night, and much to our pleasure, Ryan used his insider influence to get us a "boosted" lap (For those that don't know, that's when the lift doesn't slow down at the top, completely batshit crazy airtime down that first drop)

Huge thanks to Ryan for another year of awesome operations on Toro, and the boosted lap! Huge thanks to Sean on El Diablo for being hilarious while putting huge amounts of people through the ride, while giving everyone a cycle they won't forget.

I'll be out for Holiday in the Park for sure, hope to see some of you guys there!

It was great seeing you man! I feel like we always run into each other at parks. I only work at GADV a few times a month so I guess it was good timing!

(P.S. The boost we used on our ride was the last boost for the 2017 season, we ran out of boosts for the day after that one lol)

I don't want to start anything, so please don't bite my head off or anything. But Coaster Force just posted an IAAPA round up on their website that showed all the highlights from IAAPA. They had a picture of the Harley Quinn Crazy Coaster train. The caption for it says this: "The final train reveal at the show was for another Six Flags coaster – Harley Quinn’s Crazy Coaster due to open at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom early next year. The manufacturer of the ride, Skyline Attractions, unveiled the Skywarp coaster concept at IAAPA 2016 and, aside from the one pictured above, they have sold another to Six Flags Great Adventure."

That's awesome to hear, I'll add it to the list of "lasts" I've experienced. The only other "last" I have, is the last ever ride on the Screamin' Swing at Dorney Park.

I had a really great visit to the park today. I was actually there for less than three hours but I got a few coaster marathons. The lights in the parts of the park I saw were the same as last year so they were great, and I love the campfire smell (anything a park does that reminds you of Knoebels is a plus). There were no lines and the operations were generally good, especially on Batman. I think they may have started to purposely stack trains until the stations got filled up on Skull Mountain and Nitro (there was only an hour or so of the day where two trains would have been useful). I didn't mind the rain at all and it wasn't too cold. Rides:

Skull Mountain x 4 - Last car of course. I noticed that the drop is slightly stronger on the right side than the left.

Nitro x 6 - It was drizzling on and off during my first five rides, then I took my final ride for the day at night in the back row in the rain. Great!

Batman x 10 - EPIC marathon in the last two rows without leaving the station!!! My legs felt pretty messed up when I walked around the park for a little while.

Here are some pictures I took from tonight's Media Event for the start of Holiday in the Park. I did not ride any coasters as I was not feeling well. I did try two new food items at the park. The Salted Caramel Pretzels were better tasting than they sounded. I used tried the waffles, there is a stand exclusively for waffles right next to the Old Country path on the way to Justice League.

Nice report Larry, hope you feel better soon!

This is going to be more of an abbreviated report than normal which is why I'm posting it in the main thread but we also made our first Holiday in the Park trip of the season yesterday and had a great time! Brit was getting over a cold so we opted not to go Saturday (given the rainy forecast) and give her an extra day to recover. We almost didn't go yesterday as the temperatures were in the high 40's with insane winds at park opening. Gusts were over 50 mph, high wind warnings were in effect all over the place and there were tons of reports of downed trees and power outages on the radio on the way in so we assumed that some of the coasters (mainly Nitro) would be a no-go. Eventually we decided to take the chance though, knowing that even without some of the coasters, Holiday in the Park is always a great time. After a 2 hour drive we got there a little after 2:00 to find...

SERIOUSLY??? In 40 degree temperatures in late November with 50 mph gusts??? Sorry, Six Flags. Sorry I ever doubted you. I of all people should know better. I won't let it happen again.

All of the B&Ms were running one train due to wind so they wouldn't have to send empties at the end of the night but Nitro, Batman and (maybe) Superman have multiple trains available for the event. I have no idea if Green Lantern does because we didn't ride it because it's terrible. Early in the day and late at night when crowd levels were low the Nitro crew was front-loading the trains and asking people to move if they chose to sit in the back but the train wasn't full. They had it running much better than it had any right to be running though and I forgot how much airtime this thing has in the front seat on top of that first swooping turn.

Throughout the course of the day we got 4 or 5 Nitro rides, most in the back but a few towards the front at the end of the night (the park was pretty busy given the fact that it was a Sunday and given the wind but it cleared out ridiculously fast around 7:00). As always, the ride was an absolute blast.

Batman the Ride: Reigning Holiday in the Park Champion 2 Years Running.

Anyone who's attended Holiday in the Park at Great Adventure knows that while it's a ton of fun riding the other B&M's, Nitro, Superman and G̶r̶e̶e̶n̶ ̶L̶a̶n̶t̶e̶r̶n̶ (alright... maybe that last one shouldn't be described as "fun") during Holiday in the Park and marveling at the fact that the park even managed to get them running, if you want to ride a coaster that feels like it's running in true, mid season form then you need to make your way over to Batman. Year after year, the caped crusader seems to be on a never-ending crusade to defy the laws of physics, weather and common sense and run at absolutely ludicrous speeds in frigid temperatures and high winds regardless of whether or not there's even anyone in the train.

Our first ride was taken with a full train and the ride was absolutely amazing, crazy feeling of blood rushing to your legs (why is Batman the only invert that does that), rapid fire corkscrews, insane twists... god I love this ride. We rode again near the end of the night though and were disappointed to see that we were the only people on the train. The whole time we were walking up to it we never saw it run and were worried that it was closed, but it turns out they were just waiting for riders. Given the weather conditions and the fact that the train was empty we didn't expect much (especially because Nitro was being front-loaded and struggling quite a bit by that point), but the ride proceeded to blast through the course like it had rockets strapped to it and deliver the type of OMFG experience that only a Holiday in the Park Batman ride can. I f*cking give up trying to understand this thing. It's amazing.

We spent most of the day wandering around, taking in the sights and holiday atmosphere and riding rides as we came to them. Sky Screamer and Joker didn't open with the park due to wind but a few hours into the day we were up and running and we ended up taking a ride on both later on (well... I took a ride on Joker. Brit still hates it but we're working on that ).

Happy Holiday in the Park!!!

After our first few rides we made our way over to Merry Marketplace. I highly suggest heading over there early in the day as they usually have some animals out and running around before the sun goes down. This time we were in for a treat as they just had a large litter of baby goats and they were exactly as adorable as one would expect. A few of the employees were walking around with the baby goats sleeping in their jackets. I want their job. After spending quite a bit of time there, we eventually pried ourselves away and made our way over to Justice League to warm up.

I have to say, it's really nice having Justice League for the event this year. Not only is it a great, family-friendly ride but it's the only ride in the park (aside from a small portion of Dark Knight) with a fully heated queue and ride experience. Pretty much all of the effects were working and the ride was great as always. This ride had the longest line in the park pretty much all day, generally running about 30 minutes (which is impressive since it moved faster than normal as there's no Flash Pass during Holiday in the Park). We rode twice, with Brit totally schooling me in the process. Apparently she's a top 20% player of all time. That's my girl...

This ride is awesome, I still can't believe it's at Six Flags and not a big-budget Florida park.

We never bothered with it in the past, but this year we invested in some Holiday in the Park cocoa cups. For about 10 bucks a pop they pay for themselves if you fill them twice in a day, and you get a really cool cup as part of the deal. As an added bonus you get $1.99 refills for the rest of Holiday in the Park (after getting free refills the first day). I normally hate souvenir cup deals because I hate carrying them around, but since it's a socially acceptable cup that you could bring to work without getting funny looks and since it fit in a zippered jacket pocket so it wasn't too annoying to carry around, it's actually a pretty sweet deal.

IMG_7876.thumb.JPG.e0bf730a8b44f53c822426968e2a7371.JPG

Cheers!

After finishing our sugar-induced coma in a cup, we made our way over to "Poinsettia Peak". Last season, ride operators referred to the ride as "Poinsettia Peak" and in addition to the awesome red lights that covered the building the music and interior effects were shut off to give the ride more of a family-friendly vibe.

I'm happy to report that this season the mountain seems to be fighting back. Not only was the ride delivering copious amounts of airtime per usual but it was doing it with death metal music turned up to the max and the skull theming still going strong. In-fact, the death metal was cranked up so loud that you could routinely hear it outside the ride, even over the Christmas music. Nice to see that the mountain isn't f*cking around this year.

IMG_7881.thumb.JPG.72f99ac56c1ffb7cd89e76af94146b6e.JPG

We dare you to face the intensity!!!! Merry f*cking Christmas. Love, Intamin

When we got off of Skull Mou... I mean, Poinsettia Peak, it was starting to get dark and the lights were really starting to come alive. There aren't many major differences this season aside from some new lights over by Justice League, but they do such an amazing job that we barely cared. Holiday in the Park is phenomenal and I still can't really believe the same park that puts on the worst Halloween event in America (and possibly the world) puts on such a fantastic Christmas event.

IMG_7897.thumb.JPG.2a2d7f8af13bca155f360c64a1773896.JPG

Polar Point is always a highlight.

After wandering around a bit more, checking out the lights and having a generally awesome time we thought about heading back for another ride on Skull Mountain. On the way though, we saw what could only be described as a "Christmas Miracle" given the insane weather all morning and early afternoon.

Merry Christmas to me!

As soon as we saw them loading cabins we got right in line, knowing that as soon as everyone figured out they were getting ready to open the ride the line would probably build to huge levels. Skyway is always one of the most popular rides in the park during Holiday in the Park since it offers a pretty awesome view of the lights so we felt pretty fortunate to catch it when we did. About 5 minutes later when the ride finally opened, the queue had wrapped around the fence past Jolly Roger and ended up being about 20-30 minutes long.

Behind us in line was a terrified woman with her husband. She looks like she just walked off the set of "Real Housewives of New Jersey" and obnoxiously screaming to everyone up and down the line asking if anyone was riding who was afraid of heights and if it was scary. Obviously nobody answered because no... nobody would be in line for a Skyway in high winds if they were afraid of heights, dumbass but we reassured her that it wasn't that bad because we're terrible people and she was annoying.

We sort of forgot about the whole thing throughout the first half of the ride as we took in the awesome views and enjoyed the lights, but as we exited the turnaround station we heard her car coming in to the fort station as she screamed bloody murder (in the "Jersey-ist" accent possible) "GAHT ME AWWWWF NAWWWW, GAHT ME AWWWWF THIS THING, GAHT ME AWWWWWF AWWWWWF!!!!!!".

To our surprise, they actually did get her off and have security escort her through the closed part of the park but a few minutes later they made an announcement to everyone on the cable and in the line that Skyway was a one way journey because the other half of the park was closed and that if you were afraid of heights you could not be allowed to exit at the other side. Sometime's Jersey's just gotta Jersey.

IMG_7888.thumb.JPG.b10c818e3455f08362ae1fbea389acd5.JPG

Definitely worth the wait for these views...

After Skyway we decided to venture over to the other side of the park that we had somehow managed to ignore for the entire day. The best Holiday in the Park ride offerings are on the right side of the park, but we decided to walk over to check out the peppermint path lights and ride Superman. On the way, we passed the giant snowman which was sadly deflated due to high winds. We also noted that Skyway didn't seem to be running anymore (most likely due to wind also) so we felt pretty good about our decision to stand around waiting for it to open so we could beat the crowds.

IMG_7894.thumb.JPG.77e5e4ce624945e1f7fc5ddca76d5b70.JPG

Peppermint Path is another favorite

Superman was a two train wait for the front so we opted to stick it out and were treated to a great ride. I probably give this ride more crap than it deserves. Sure, we're spoiled by rides like Manta and Tatsu but Superman is an absolute blast of a coaster in it's own right.

After exiting the ride I noted that my phone had entirely sh*t itself due to cold so I popped into the bathroom real quick to hold it under the hand dryer for about 10 seconds which did the trick. I love that Great Adventure operates 80 mph hypercoasters in temperatures where it's too cold to operate a cell phone.

This would be the point in a standard Holiday in the Park day when we'd generally opt for a waffle, but sadly Six Flags has decided to go with their own waffles this year rather than the awesome waffles from Waffle De Lys that we have grown accustomed to. We figured we'd be open minded and give them a shot though so we walked over to the poser waffle stand and got in line.

As it turned out we were waiting for quite awhile. Waffles take awhile to make, but Waffle De Lys had their own employees working the cart and could bang them out really fast. Unfortunately, that job was now left to a lone Six Flags employee who clearly had no idea what a waffle or a banana was. We stood there for 45 seconds watching him slice a banana with the peel on it before he figured out that he was supposed to peel it, then watched as he removed the peel from each section of the sliced banana one at a time before laying them on top of the piss-poor excuse for a waffle that Six Flags now offers. Objectively I guess it was mediocre enough, but after Waffle De Lys it's pretty hard not to hate this sad excuse for a waffle. The fact that you can't get ice cream with it is really the final nail in the coffin, but then again I wouldn't want to stand there while this guy tried to scoop ice cream.

IMG_7889.thumb.JPG.1d3c1992e338e74529569cb59ec65421.JPG

We had a lot of time to look at the awesome lights while waiting for Six Flags to figure out how to peel a banana.

While the waffles were a disappointment, we ate them while watching the tree show and downing some hot chocolate and that made it pretty easy to forget about that minor disappointment. As we sat there, we saw a few Skyway test cabins making their way down the cable and made our way back over to see if we could push our luck and actually get a second Holiday in the Park Skyway ride without waiting. It turned out we could, and by the time they opened the line about 5 minutes later the queue was almost entirely full. Score!

After another great ride it was getting close to closing time and the park had all but emptied out completely. It was sort of strange, almost as if someone had flipped a switch but the sizeable crowd disappeared completely between 7:30 and 8:00.

In our last hour or so, we rode Joker, Justice League, Sky Screamer, Skull Mountain, Dark Knight and Batman with minimal to non-existent waits before finally making our way over to Nitro at the end of the night. We arrived to find a half-full train of people who were re-riding constantly and we were asked to sit in the front so they could front-load it. We hopped in to the second row and were happy to see that despite the weather and half full train, Nitro was still delivering great rides.

There's nothing like a Nitro night ride through the woods in the winter (or late fall if you want to be a technical-Tom but it snowed on the way home so f*ck you, it's winter). We were treated to 2 awesome rides to end the day, including the last train of the night. What an awesome way to kick off the Holiday in the Park season!

Good night from Holiday in the Park!

How were the crowds?

Solid! While the place cleared out ridiculously fast at the end of the night, for most of the day the park was pretty busy considering the winds and the fact that it was a Sunday and not a Saturday. As is generally the case during Holiday in the Park, coaster lines were pretty short but rides like Skyway and Justice league topped out around 30 minutes, food stands were busy and the midways were pretty packed from an hour or so before sundown to about 7:30.

Glad you enjoyed the event!! That Jersey woman sounded god awful

To clarify this, two trains are ran on Nitro, Skull Mountain, and kinda sorta Batman for HITP. All the other rides run 1 train while the other train undergoes rehab (besides Joker and Dark Knight cause they have hella cars.) Nitro gets away with running two since it has 3 trains to begin with and the park actually owns a 3rd train for Skull Mountain so one train is always in rehab for that ride, like how Magic Mountain does things. As for Batman, last year its maintenance cycle was thrown off because of Namtab. The trains ran for Namtab were the trains from Six Flags Over Georgia and Six Flags Over Georgia ran GADV's trains on their Batman forwards. Usually the backwards chassis is passed around and each park has to place their own seats and restraints on it but each park wanted to run Namtab for as long as possible. Idk what happened when the forward trains returned but it wasn't necessary to pull one train off for rehab last season.

To add a little more to my trip yesterday.

I also tried the waffle and had a slightly netter experience than Bill. When I got to the register the waffle was prepared and took practically the same amount of time as it did from Waffle de Lys last year and the same amount of time as Waffle de Lys and Kennywood this summer. The only issue I encountered was confusion over the price of a topping. The sign I posted earlier says it is $3 extra for a signature creation and $1 for either nutella, hot fudge, sugar, other options. The cashier seems to be confused about the different costs of upcharges, but ultimately only charged $1. To me it appeared they used the same batter that is used in the funnel cakes with extra sugar added, but my major issue for me was the texture of the waffle, which was not crispy enough. However, I did really enjoy using the meal plan to option a good snack for $1.

Waffle de Lys was never meant to be a permanent vendor at the park. They were brought in the first year with other vendors, to due lack of staff in the food area for the first year of the event. Last year it was a last minute decision to bring them back to the event.

Spirit of the Season is a good time filler providing a place to sit down with your hot chocolate and get off your feet. It is a singing and dancing revue featuring 8 performers and a variety of holiday songs. I did not see the next Kelly Clarkson or Teri Garr in the cast but they gave a solid effort.

There seemed to be much more holiday merchandise around the park for sale this year.

As Bill mentioned, the addition of season long hot chocolate special souvenir cup is a great value if you plan a few visits.

I inquired about the success of Justice League and there if were concerns that it was at the end of a dead end path. Over the course of the season some newer guests had expressed surprise that a ride was after Batman. But the park was very happy about the lack of downtime for the ride and the benefit of having another indoor attraction during HITP. One last thing, although it was not stated outright it was implied that with the addition of Cyborg Cyber Spin, the park will continue with future rides along the old Old Country path leading to a potential re-opening of the path. Maybe not next year, but that's where I see this going.

^^Thanks guys! And thanks for the clarification Ryan!

Also, speaking of Ryan this is REALLY random but I'm about to quote a ridiculously old post of yours and back you up on a 3 year old argument that nobody remembers or gives a sh*t about. I noticed something pretty cool last night and just got around to Googling it to see if I was crazy. Google led me back to this thread and one of your old posts...

I've heard look to the right of Nitro's second hill and you can kind of see the Philadelphia skyline.

Philadelphia is 80 miles away from Six Flags. No, you can't. Not even on the clearest day.

Yes, yes you can. I couldn't believe it either (though as the crow flies, it's much closer than 80 miles).

Obviously I've ridden Nitro a ton. I'm not dorky enough to keep track, but I'd bet good money that I've ridden Nitro far more than any other coaster. I've always loved the view from the lift, but last night it was even better than normal. Since it was winter and it was f*cking freezing, visibility was amazing last night and we got an insane view of the Philadelphia skyline from Nitro's lift hill (like you could pick out individual buildings). That was a first, but it was really cool. I've heard that you can see the Philadelphia and New York skyline from Kingda Ka (though I've never been able to) but I had no idea this was even a thing from Nitro's lift hill. That was definitively pretty awesome...

Anyway, carry on.

You're sure you weren't looking at Trenton?

That was my first thought, but yeah. I assumed it was Trenton until we crested the lift and saw Trenton. You could clearly make out the buildings, mainly that weird triangle thing (which is apparently called "One Liberty Place" and not "that weird triangle thing", the more you know...).

Lmaooo! Man I don't even remember making that post but that's a nice throwback. For whatever reason, several users and I used to clash all the time in this thread. I think someone even told me off and called me a cheerleader for Great Adventure Good times.

But that's dope you got such a clear view of Philly! I've never gotten a view that good but I've seen it vaguely in the distance. And you can see NYC and Philadelphia from the top of Ka! (Just definitely not at the same time unless you have insane super powers or something.)

..... I've heard you can even see Los Angeles from the top of Ka.... (who will pick a fight with me over this one.)
