robinschroder
Robotland was recently featured on the BBC World Fast:track programme. Hopefully this link works internationally, being from BBC World. Due to open in 2014 according to the programme (and as mentioned in the previous news too), it will be a cross between an educational environment and a traditional theme park. They used the word "Edutainment". Interestingly some of their concept art shown in the programme features what appears to be an Intamin Mega-Lite (???) being held by a robot. coasterfreak101
If the first U.S. Megalite comes with a giant robot I don't think anybody will be complaining.
SharkTums
I think you can pretty much count on a TPR Korea 2014 Trip if there's a Robot Megalite coaster!
Meteornotes
Again, I highly approve of this project. Especially if robots chase down line jumpers. dt
jedimaster1227
http://thediplomat.com/2014/01/south-koreas-660-million-robot-theme-park-to-open-in-2016/ If you happened to catch last year’s sci-fi blockbuster Pacific Rim, you might be able to grasp the idea of what a giant robot would look like. Of course, the monster-fighting Jaegers were made possible by Hollywood’s best digital effects – but a robot statue that will serve as the centerpiece of an upcoming South Korean theme park might become the closest real-world alternative. Despite being incapable of rocket-punching bad guys, a 364-foot-tall Taekwon V – South Korea’s most famous giant robot hero, known as Voltar the Invincible in the U.S. – will beckon thrill-seekers and cyborg enthusiasts to Robot Land. After some lengthy delays, construction began on the $660 million entertainment complex last month. “Since 2007, the South Korean government has dreamed of a robotics research park and themed destination with rides, exhibitions, shopping, and even housing,” wrote Gizmag. “Although the originally planned open date of 2012 has come and gone, ground was officially broken for the 300-acre park [in December] and a new timeline seems to indicate that Robot Land may now be on target to deliver on its promise of a themed world dedicated to robots.” Government officials expect the first phase of construction to be completed in September 2016. In addition to traditional rides like roller coasters and Ferris wheels, Robot Land will offer a host of educational and industrial facilities – including a post-graduate robotics school, a Robotics Institute, and a research and development center. “The majority of the planned offerings veer more towards edutainment, with an interactive robot aquarium, exhibition halls, and an auto factory that introduces visitors to a robotic automotive assembly line,” added Gizmag. The 1.15 million square meter property will also house a water park, a convention center (which appears to be held up by four giant robots), and shopping malls. A second phase, slated for completion in 2018, will add hotels and condominiums. Robot Land will be situated in the Cheongna Free Economic Zone, located between Incheon International Airport (ICN) and the urban sprawl of Seoul. According to Robot Land’s website, 40 million travelers passed through ICN in 2011 – with Beijing, Tokyo and Shanghai all short flights away. South Korea’s technology-minded government hopes to put a robot in every household by 2020. The country has developed companion robots for the elderly and even a robotic prison guard. SharkTums
I saw some pictures that look like they may have actually REALLY started working on this project. Now keep in mind we've seen projects get this far and die out, but I really hope to see more progress and return to South Korea for another tour! Gutterflower
So 8 years after the announcement it looks like this may happen http://www.zamperla.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/ZPL333_Zpress_June_WEB2.pdf The latest Z Press news letter from Zamperla says they've sold a Thunderbolt to Mason Robotland South Korea opening next year. Perhaps it is back on.
Garet
What is it with both Korea's and their love of Zamperla? So many of the new additions to the parks across the country have been Zamperla lately. I would never have guessed this was where the Thunderbolt was going, all mention of Robotland in recent years seemed to indicate that they actually wanted to scale back a little on the theme park side of things in order to attract actual robotics companies and make it a specialized business area, I believe a few companies are already in the area such as dron companies etc: http://www.joongboo.com/?mod=news&act=articleView&idxno=1181870
Garet
So Robot Land is open and so is the Thunderbolt but it ended up being built in Masan, not Incheon: https://robot-land.co.kr/zone/mainattraction.php So it's completely the other end of the country from where it was proposed (I think Incheon's Robot Land ended up being nothing to do with this theme park) It's kind of in the area near where Lotte World built their water park a few years back (The opposite side of the country from their main park) so the two combined could make it worth a trip for a summer weekend for me next year. RCDB lists 3 coasters but as far as I'm aware there's only the Thunderbolt in the park and a family coaster in the park, but New Voyage is actually the splash-boat with the little dips before the big drop: https://robot-land.co.kr/
Garet
It seems the owners of Robot Land and Seoul Land are going to merge. Will be interesting to see if anything comes of this considering Robot Land is Korea's newest park and Seoul Land has basically remained with almost the same rides for the last 20-30 years. https://www.seoulland.co.kr/customer/news_view.asp?idx=1553&page=
