I wanted to share something a bit different with you

I am currently in school studying to become a ship officer. Because of this I recently travelled to Kristiansund, Norway, to attend a course in "Crowd and crisis management and human behavior" which is a course that is mandatory if you are going to work on a passenger vessel.

Since it was way cheaper than flying i travelled with "Hurtigruten", which is a Cruise/Ferry and transport service on the coast of Norway. With their route starting in Bergen in the south and going all the way north to "Kirkenes". A round trip takes 11 days! That is how long our country is.

I only travelled from Bergen to Kristiansund and back though which takes about 21 hours. On the way up to Kristiansund the ship sailed into the beautiful "Geirangerfjord" with it`s spectacular mountains. Se if you can spot Millennium Force on one of the photos to show the sheer scale of these mountains

The ships i sailed with was "Vesterålen" on the way up (I have no photos of this ship, sorry,) And the recently renovated "Kong Harald" on my way home.

I feel that the chances of someone else being selected are against this guy...

But yeah, the ship looks great! I've only been on one trip with Hurtigruten, and that was on a class trip to Aalesund about 10 years ago. On the way up we were sailing with the old M/S Lofoten from 1964, which was really cool. You could feel it in the whole ship when they fired up the engines. It's the oldest ship in their fleet, and it's still sailing.

On the return trip to Bergen we had one of the newer ships, but I cannot really remember much of that. Mainly because I was drunk most of the time...

Edit:

I was just looking at their website and I see that they have a map where you can see where all their ships are at any given time. That's really cool!

If i remember correctly M/S Lofoten`s diesel engine has the most running hours in the world, over 300 000 hours i think it was, I also read somewhere that M/S Lofoten have travelled a distance that equals over 9 trips to the moon and back!

^That would be correct, I did a quick check and found several articles from 2015 when the engine reached 300,000 running hours. 4,000,000 nautical miles, equaling to 9,6 times to the moon and back, or 185 times around the equator.

Link to article with several video clips as well.

Since the trip I went on was with an engineering class, we had a guided tour of the engine room. That was a really cool experience, with so many visible moving parts.

There are cruise ships that are headed to the Path of Totality for the eclipse today! Why didn't we think to do an Eclipse Cruise!

'Cause everybody was freeking out about the mid-August Coaster News too much, to think about doing it.

It's not a cruise ship, but this is the best thread for it and the building method is the same. Currently dock mounting the shaft alley unit of the largest container ship ever to be built in the US. It's also one of the heaviest pieces we have ever picked up here at the yard weighing in at 710 MTON.

I'm waiting on the one with a legit amusement park area complete with a coaster. It's coming, I just know it is. MSC toyed with a drop tower idea for one of their new ships.

^ Same. I'm waiting for a coaster, and drop tower on a cruise ship. It's going to happen. It is just a matter of time.

I'm betting Carnival or Royal will be the first to jump on board.

Speaking of Klassy Kruise... Just came across this on Yahoo News.

Girl dies after falling from cruise ship's interior deck to one below in Miami

Good Morning America • MORGAN WINSOR • 21 hours ago

An 8-year-old girl died Saturday after falling from one deck in a cruise ship's interior atrium to a lower deck, officials said.

The girl, whose name has not been released, fell on the Carnival Glory cruise ship while it was docked at the Dante B. Fascell Port of Miami on Saturday morning. Miami Fire Rescue personnel responded to the scene around 8:15 a.m. ET and provided emergency care to the child, according to the Miami-Dade Police Department.

The girl was subsequently taken to the nearby Ryder Trauma Center, where she died from her injuries, police said.

Erika Benitez of Miami-Dade Fire Rescue told ABC News the girl was in critical condition when she arrived at the hospital.

It's unclear what led the child to fall. Homicide detectives are investigating the incident, police said.

Carnival Cruise Lines said the the ship's command immediately contacted police after she fell and transported her to the ship's medical center.

“Our most heartfelt care and concern is with the family at this very difficult time.” Carnival Cruise Lines spokesperson Jennifer de la Cruz said in a statement Saturday.

Source.

I still can't think of anything worse than going on family vacation, and returning home with one less family member.

Thoughts are with her family.

Just booked a cruise that goes to Cuba plus stays overnight there! My fiance really wanted to go and it's very hard to just "go" there. You have to do a certain amount of hours for education but with staying overnight I'm sure it will be fine!
