Eric's Brochure Kingdom: The Return!

Recommended Posts

Welcome to Eric's Brochure Kingdom!

Ever since I moved from Boston to the Tampa Bay area in 1983 at the age of 8, I have collected brochures. Since this was before the internet, when I was young, I cherished any theme park or attraction brochure I was able to get my hands on. I would look at the photos of the park's attractions and dream of visiting someday. As I have gotten older, thanks to TPR I have been able to fulfill some of those dreams. So I thought I might use this thread to share my collection of brochures. I love seeing how attractions and the parks have changed over the years. Also as a graphic artist, it is a trip to see the different design layouts, styles and colors evolve over the years. So come with me and explore a kingdom full of brochures through the years! Hope you enjoy!

You my friend have the holy grail of Adventure Island brochures.I'm also a fellow brochure collector,I possibly have thousands of brochures, park maps, magazines etc.. going back almost 15-20 years.Whenever someone goes on vacation somewhere I don't want a t-shirt or some souvenir,I tell them to look in their hotel lobby and see if they see a theme park brochure and bring it back to me.My earliest visit to Adventure Island was probably around 2002 and from these pictures it seems like this park got infused with trees between the time of these brochures and my visits, some of the slides in the brochures look so plain, the park now seems to have many more trees and shade. It's still very cool to see these pictures.

^ Thanks! Sounds like we are a lot alike. My story is pretty much the same: friends and family would always bring me back theme park brochures from their trips. I started to get a lot of brochures, especially from Florida.

Adventure Island has really grown over the years. A major growth happened in the 80's to mid-90's. They seemed to add a new attraction almost every year. And I agree, many trees have filled in a lot of the old empty areas. The many trees now provide nice shaded areas for almost half the park.

Thanks for posting these!

Seeing the progression of the park is great. One thing I noticed, women's bathing suits have gotten more revealing, while men's have become less. In some cases this a good thing, in others its very very bad.

Thanks everyone, glad you are enjoying this trip down Adventure Island memory lane. I agree, I think it is neat to see how the park has grown and it is cool to see how people's fashions and the brochure's design elements have evolved.

For today's update, I finish with the rest of my Adventure Island brochures: Years 1997, 1999, 2000 and a park map/guide from 2008. It's too bad, beginning in 2001, Adventure Island stopped having their own brochure and started only appearing in the last couple of pages of Busch Gardens Tampa Bay's brochures. Oh well, here is today's update. Enjoy!

Did we ever find out why they took out Tampa Typhoon and the middle slide on Water Moccasin?

I understand they took out BarraTuba because of injuries, but those other two slides are everywhere at all other parks, it seems weird they took them out.

Also, do any of you remember when Key West Rapids debuted it had these cool interlocking tubes so you could ride four people together? Almost like a precursor of the ProSlide Cloverleaf tubes.

They quickly got rid of them.

^ I asked some park employees why the Tampa Typhoon slide was removed a few years ago. I was told they wanted to replace it with a more family friendly and high capacity attraction. That attraction was Riptide - the 4 lane mat racer slide complex. Kind of weird considering that Ripetide isn't even where the Tampa Typhoon was. I think personally TT was just not that popular anymore. I know a lot of people including myself hated getting banged up and welts on your back from that slide. Then again I might not of liked it because I'm getter older!

As of last spring when I went to the park, The Water Moccasin's middle tube slide was still part of the attraction. I'm not sure why on the park map it shows it as a 2 slide attraction. The middle slide is always intense, and is very deceiving! I don't even think your back touches the slide, it is so steep!

I do remember when the Key West Rapids opened with the clover locking rafts. I always thought it was a shame that they changed the slide to be only single and double tubes. I don't know, maybe the weight of the 4 connecting rafts was too heavy for the structure? It's too bad because that line would move SO much faster!

^^The urban legend for us local 'kids' was that one of the tubes got pushed off the side of the slide! And that's why Key West Rapids changed.

My educated guess is that the attachments were just falling apart between the sun and chlorine and wear and tear. I wonder if it could use the new cloverleafs now?

Tonight's update is a recent addition to the theme/water park world. From last year, Aquatica. So far this is the only brochure for Aquatica I am aware of. Similar to Adventure Island now being part of Busch Garden's brochure, Aquatica is now part of Sea World Orlando's brochure.

Today's edition features only one brochure. Atlantis The Water Kingdom in Hollywood, FL from 1991. This park from my understanding opened in the early 80's and was ran by Six Flags then was sold. After the new owners re-opened the park in the early 90's, the park was heavily damaged by hurricane Andrew in 1992 and never reopened. I never got to visit, it's too bad because it looks like a fun place. Did anyone ever visit this park? What was it like?

I always wondered why they couldn't use standard multi-person rafts like on most family raft slides (like WaHoo Run). I guess it would be really expensive to build the converbelt system for the rafts.

I visited Six Flags Atlantis/Atlantis probably 2 or 3 times before it closed.I was probably 13 years old the last time I went and what I remember most is a huge slide tower with most or all of the slides in the park and a pretty big wave pool,I also remember that it didn't have many shaded areas. If I would have been older when it was open I definitely would've visited it more times. However to this day I know that it was located at what is now a shopping center with a Dave and Buster's on I-95 between Stirling and Sheridan in Hollywood, very close to Boomer's and the Dania Beach Hurricane. There's been talk for about 5 years now of another waterpark being built about about 5 minutes from my house in the parking lot of the Miami Metrozoo, the latest I've heard is two firms have submitted proposals to develop the waterpark,Parc Management and a Ft.Lauderdale company who recently built a small waterpark by the Miami airport. It's been so long I've been hearing about this waterpark being built that I don't know if it ever will.

  • 2 weeks later...

Today's update is for a park that was a childhood favorite of mine, even though it was only around for 3 seasons. Boardwalk and Baseball opened after the old park, Circus World closed. The new owners did a lot of improvements to the park including adding more shade, which Circus World was known for being awful in the Florida heat. Another way to battle the heat, a log flume was added to cool off. They also added a wooden boardwalk throughout the park, which actually was easy on your feet. Along with the baseball theme complete with a baseball stadium for the Kansas City Royals spring training, the park's goal was to transport guests to a simpler time in America.

It's too bad the park didn't last, but I think a traditional amusement park with standard rides just couldn't compete with the big Orlando players down the street. Till this day everytime I drive from Tampa to Orlando, when I pass the Haines City exit I always think back to B&B with fond memories. Onto the brochures from 1987-1989. Enjoy!
